Angel of Light: This is my first song fic, so keep that in mind. The song is called ‘He’s my Son’, and it’s by Mark Schultz. I’m disclaiming it now, I don’t own it. I don’t own digimon either. For those who want to hear how the music goes, I found it at
He’s My Son
Takeru stood in the doorway of his son’s bedroom. It wasn’t an elaborate one, just plain and simple. In the far corner was the changing table, which was decorated with childish animation. Across from that, was the closet in which some of the baby’s things were stored.
In the corner across from the door, was the small wooden crib. Above it was a child’s mobile that sang a lullaby when you wound it. The walls were a pale yellow. They had painted it when they had not yet known the baby’s gender.
He watched the little life form sleep soundly in his bed. The boy was small, and only a few months old, but he seemed much older than that, for the little family had been through a lot since his arrival.
Flashback
Kari’s face was beet red as she lay in the hospital bed. She was breathing heavily, gasping for air. Her body ached and pained, and she longed for this to be over. The doctors soothed her and gave her instructions, but she caught very few of them. Her mind was all over the place, thinking to past, present and future. The only thing that kept her from screaming, was her husband standing at her side, and holding her hand.
Takeru soothed her in everyway he could. Though he would never know the pain, he tried his best to understand.
Hour after hour passed, and, after enduring all the pain and suffering, the baby was finally born. The doctor wrapped him in a soft blanket, then placed the newborn into his mother’s arms. She gazed down at him with wonder and awe. She stroked the baby’s bare pink head, and was oblivious to his cries. After a few minutes, she passed the baby over to his father.
He too looked upon the little child, amazed. Hikari smiled as she watched the pride filled her husband’s eyes.
‘What will his name be?’ a nurse asked, out of both curiosity, and for the records. \
The couple had decided on a name earlier.
Hikari smiled once more, ‘Gabriel’.
The nurse smiled back. She always loved this part of her job. It was the most rewarding.
The doctor came, as he had to take the baby away. Test needed to be run over him, to make sure he was healthy.
Hikari and Takeru stayed next to each other. Takeru took a seat beside his wife. Slowly, he closed her eyes. It had been a very tiring process, and she needed her sleep. He kissed her lightly on the forehead, and then let her sleep, never leaving her side.
After another while, the doctor came back in. Hikari was still sleeping, but woke at the sound of his footsteps. Takeru smiled at him. However, the look on the doctor’s face was grave. Immediately, the two wondered what was wrong.
The doctor sighed, ‘While we were running the tests, we discovered something unusual about him. We had a guess, but ran more. Those tests only proved what we had predicted.’ he paused, letting it sink in. He then continued, ‘Your son has leukaemia.’
They didn’t know what to say. It’s amazing how much joy can be brought into your life, only to be shattered moments later by something heartbreaking.
‘Is there anything we can do?’ Hikari asked, stunned.
‘When he gets older, yes. For now, he’s too young. As for how long he’ll actually live, I can’t tell. Some people live long lives, and some, well, don’t live long at all.’
End Flashback
The couple had monitored their son endlessly, watching his every breath. They feared for the worst. Their only prayer was for the child to be alright.
I’m down on my knees again tonight
I’m hoping this prayer will turn out right
See there is a boy that needs your help
I’ve done all that I can do myself
His mother is tired
I’m sure you can understand
Each night as sleeps
She goes in to hold his hand
And she tries not to cry
As the tears fill her eyes
While he stood there, Hikari came and wrapped her arm around his. Every night, they would watch him, and sometimes, even fall asleep in the room. They had moved a chair into that room, just so they could watch him.
As she gazed upon the sleeping child, she felt tears well up in her eyes. She couldn’t bear the thought of losing the little one. He was so joyful, so full of life. He was young, but the little one had already taken his toll on them.
She stifled a yawn, which Takeru noticed.
“You should go to bed”, he whispered softly.
She only shook her head, but he pleaded with her.
“Kari, you haven’t slept a lot lately. Go to bed, I’ll join you soon.”
Hikari looked into his eyes, and couldn’t refuse. She was tired, drained emotionally and physically. She sometimes got up at night when he didn’t know, as not to worry him. But, after countless nights of doing this, he began to notice. Slowly and reluctantly, she let go, and shuffled off to their room.
He watched her go, then turned back to the little boy. He crept up to his cradle, and stroked his tiny head. Tears also found their way into his eyes.
Can you hear me?
Am I getting through tonight?
Can You see him?
Can You make him be alright?
If You can hear me
Let me take his place somehow
See, he’s not just anyone
He’s my son
While he watched the little one, thoughts began to fill his head. What would the child’s future be like? Would he have to live with this constant fear of death? Would he grow big and strong? Would his son live to graduate? Get a job? A wife? Have kids? They would never know, unless it came to pass.
Sometimes late at night I watch him sleep
I’d dream of the boy he’d like to be
I try to be strong and see him through
But God all he needs right now is You
Let him grow old
Live life without this fear
What would I be
Living without him there
He’s so tired and he’s scared
Let him know that You’re there
Takeru fell to his knees beside the crib. He placed his head in his hands, and sobbed into them. He did this quietly, so Hikari wouldn’t hear him.
“Please” He called out softly, “don’t take him. I couldn’t live without him. Make him better, please, don’t leave him. Don’t You see him? Can’t You see the things he has to endure? Can’t You see his future? A boy shouldn’t have to live like this; living in a constant fear, not being able to know if he’ll ever see tomorrow! Please, make him better. I‘ll take his place, just don‘t make him do this. He’s just a little boy. He has a life to live out.”
Despite what he had wanted, Hikari did hear him. She walked in silently, and placed her arms around him. Takeru didn’t protest, he just sobbed into her shoulder. Every part of her wanted to cry with him, but she had to stay strong. He hadn’t let his emotions come out, and it was his turn to.
Can you here me?
Am I getting through tonight?
Can You see him?
Can You make him be alright?
If You can hear me
Let me take his place somehow
See, he’s not just anyone
He’s my son
After about half and hour and a tissue box later, Takeru took a deep breath. He felt as if a load had been lifted from his heart.
Can you here me?
Am I getting through tonight?
Can You see him?
Can You make him be alright?
If You can hear me
Let me take his place somehow
See, he’s not just anyone
He’s my son
The couple finally got up, and looked over the boy once more. Takeru leaned down, and kissed his son’s brow. The child stirred a little in his sleep, but did nothing more. He put his arm around his wife, and they exited the room. At the doorway, he stopped and took one last look, and smiled.
Can You hear me?
Can You see him?
Please don’t leave him
He’s my son!
Angel of Light: So? How was it? I’m personally very happy with it, but what do my opinions count? In case you were wondering, this song is about Mark Shultz’s son. He as leukaemia. This isn’t a new song, and I don’t really know how he’s doing. Every time I hear this, it makes me cry….seriously. I know I’m a sap. But, the world needs some of those too, right?
