He led her away from the crowded dance hall and out to the garden. As he passed a rose bush, he carefully picked a rose. He placed the rose in her hair, then took her into his arms to dance. The music that drifted from the hall surrounded them as they waltzed.

Time seemed to slow as they stared into one another's eyes. He was smiling that rare smile. Not even the war could ruin this moment they shared. She gave him a quick kiss to see his reaction. His smile faltered then widened before he returned the kiss.

But if I'd only known how the king would fall

"Relena?"

The voice came from the hall. She broke the kiss and turned toward the sound.

"Here, Heero!"

He looked at her. How could she? He turned away and she watched as he left.

"Relena, you shouldn't be by yourself."

"But..." She glanced off looking for any sign of him. "Yes, Heero."

"Good now come back inside."

Heero turned toward the hall but stopped when he relized she wasn't following. She was staring off into the garden.

"Relena."

"Coming."

He sat on the bench reading yet another book. It was a few months after the Mariemaia war and he hadn't seen anyone in a couple of days. He felt a presence near him but before he looked up, a hand was holding a rose out to him. He smiled as he looked into her eyes much like the night so long ago.
