Chapter 1
A man with shoulder length black hair made his way up the steps of the dungeons to the castle school. This school was Hogwarts and this man was the resident Potions professor, Professor Severus Snape. The man had a scowl firmly fixed upon his face. He was not in the mood to have had his nice and quiet vacation get interrupted by the likes of a man named Albus Dumbledore, the current headmaster to Hogwarts. The slight problem was that he hadn't bothered to leave the school that summer, all because he knew what his assigned job was. Thanks to that he hadn't returned to Spinner's End like he had wished. Instead he was currently making his way to the headmaster's office. "He makes me stay at the castle for the summer and then goes and interrupts my quiet time. I would have thought that he would have the common curtsey to let me be alone and work on my potions work. But no, instead he has to drag me out of the dungeons to talk. I bet he wants to talk about Potter. I would believe it if the brat has managed to get himself into some sort of trouble. It wouldn't surprise me at all. The stupid brat is always getting himself into some sort of trouble. All of this would have been much better if that man hadn't saved me. Why did James bloody Potter have to save my life that day?"
He just continued on with that line of thought, muttering to himself under his breath. It was that very fixation on his thoughts that caused the usually graceful Severus Snape to run straight into someone. He knew he had run into the person quickly and automatically grabbed onto them to keep them from falling. He hadn't looked at the person when he first grabbed them; he had only registered to grab them. There was a slight problem with this however. It took Severus Snape a moment to realize that he hadn't grabbed the person by the arms; instead he had grabbed them by the waist. When he realized where he had grabbed he looked down at the person's face to apologize to them, but he didn't even get a chance to start. When he saw the top of the head, all he could see was a thick wave of light grey hair, it was almost silver, but still deep enough to be real grey. It was that grey hair that made him think, 'No it can't be, this can't be right. I have to be imagining things.'
He moved his onyx eyes slowly downwards, finally catching sight of a pair of cloudy blue eyes, they were covered almost in a pure white, but the blue could be seen, it was just really light. When he saw the eyes, the face came into sharp focus. The cheekbones were hidden under a layer of fair skin that wasn't thinly sculpted like Severus', but they had a little definition, just not as much. His eyes fell to the lips, taking in their soft and slightly purpled texture. He could see the cracks that had formed from them being chapped. "Kelsey?" He suddenly asked, letting his mind register exactly who it was that he held by the waist in his arms.
The clouded eyes just widened at the sound of Severus' deep voice. The woman, now identified as Kelsey, began to shift in Severus' arms, trying to regain her balance. Severus helped her stand properly and just let her go, watching her back away from him, panting slightly at the effort it took for her to get away. She wasn't a thin woman like most people would think or like, she was a little bit plump; she was rather curvy and not very tall, only about a height of 165 centimetres. She was wearing a pair of deep purple robes that were open revealing a tank top and jeans. She even had a pair of sneakers on. She had stopped backing away when she was a good two meters away from Severus. "Severus?" Her voice was soft, having a slight lilt to it. Her accent was cultured and light. She seemed to have a voice that spoke of experience, but in all sense it seemed to also just be soft and not able to be heard if it wasn't known to be heard.
Severus frowned slightly, he wasn't sure as to why she was backing away from him, but it hurt ever so slightly. A very brief flash of pain crossed his face before it was once again covered up by a mask of indifference, but even his mask wasn't perfect around the sight of the woman in front of him. "Kelsey…I…What are you doing here at Hogwarts?" He felt deep within his heart that he wanted her to come to him, but she just stayed where she was, not moving forward or backwards.
"I am just here right now. I also know that Professor Dumbledore called you up to his office for a little conversation. He has called you up to inform you of who the new Defence against the Dark Arts instructor is." She just kept her distance, letting her breath come slowly in and out, as her breaths were deep and just a tiny bit shallow.
Severus raised one of his thin black eyebrows at her pronouncement. He then voiced the question that had come into his mind the instant she had finished her statement, because he hadn't expected it at all. "And you know who the new defence instructor is?" He let the slight amusement creep into his voice at the thought that she would know before him, when he was a teacher at the school and she wasn't.
She just nodded, letting herself appear calm and undisturbed by the man in front of her. "Yes I do. I know who the instructor is because I will be the new defence professor." Her voice was just as calm as she appeared to be. There wasn't a shaking quality to it as it had been when she had said Severus earlier. In fact, she seemed undisturbed by Severus anymore.
Severus felt a slight tug at the corner of his lips. He was attempting to fight the smile that wished to cross his face from the thought of her teaching. He wanted to smile, but instead he kept his eyes focused completely in her film covered ones. "You're going to be the new defence professor? Who would have thought you would do such a thing?" He made his voice sound amused, but it took real force for him to accomplish such a feat and he was feeling the energy it caused him to do such a thing.
Kelsey just nodded, taking a hand and placing it into her pocket. The robe pocket appeared to be deep as her arm went in to the middle of her arm, but Severus knew that it was just from a spell she liked to place on her robes. All her robes generally had no sleeves on them, as she found they obstructed her hands, which she needed. After a moment of apparent search, she pulled her hand out of the pocket and held an aged envelope within it. The letter appeared to be old, about fifteen years old by his estimation. She just slowly lifted the letter out at arms length and let it face his direction. "This is for you Severus. I meant to send this letter to you quite a few years ago. Sorry about not sending it." Severus just watched her and noticed that she wasn't taking any steps towards him. He drew in a deep breath and began taking a couple unsteady steps towards the woman, his stride making it easy to close the distance between himself and her hand. He carefully reached out and slowly took the letter from her, brushing her fingers slightly.
When the letter had been removed from her hand she drew it back quickly, almost as if she had been burned when he touched her. Severus saw her turn around, lifting the other arm up. Wrapped around the wrist was a strange creature. It looked like snake with deep purple and green scales, yet it had little black feathery wings about midway down its back, they flapped every now and then, but didn't move otherwise. The head was the interesting piece, it was the head of a cat, only on a much smaller level and better able to be supported by the frame of the creature. The head stood out against the purple and green scales by the simple fact that it was chocolate brown with a spot of white over one of the eyes. This creature was known as a Keltensal. Severus took in another deep breath and asked, "Where are you going?"
She just looked over her shoulder at him, not moving her hand. She was looking in his direction, having heard his voice from the one spot she had earlier. "I'm attempting to find the rooms I will be residing in this school year." She then began to take steps, her robe swishing back and forth behind her. Severus saw her turn a corner, disappearing around it. He thought the statement that she made interesting, seeing as how she was heading down the corridor that usually led to the area that the defence teachers usually resided in.
Severus just sighed in disappointment, turning to face the dungeons once again. He decided against going to visit the headmaster because Kelsey had just told him what Dumbledore wished to speak to him about. His mind however was focused on something completely different than the fact that he wasn't the defence instructor once again. His mind had taken a turn towards the woman that he had been talking to and the letter that he held in his hands. He hadn't seen Kelsey in over fifteen years and the last night he had seen her still haunted him. He had one thing on his mind though, 'Why would she take so long to send me this letter? Why wouldn't she even send it? I thought that she never wanted to speak with me again after that night.' As he thought those thoughts, his mind recalled the eventful night from fifteen years earlier.
Flashback
The grey haired woman known as Kelsey leaned against a tall oak tree. Her shoulder was just touching the tree, she wasn't fully leaning against it. It appeared as if she was waiting for someone, and had been waiting a while. She had just pushed herself away from the tree and got ready to leave that two long fingered hands were placed upon her shoulders. "Guess who," said a voice from behind her.
In a nice bout of speed she turned around and faced the person who had walked up behind her. She took her arms and threw them around the person's neck, having to stand on her toes slightly to be able to do such a thing. "Severus! I thought you weren't coming. I waited for you for such a long time."
The person, who was identified by Kelsey as Severus, carefully wrapped his arms around her, drawing her closer to him. He had her against his torso, holding her close to him. "You should know that I would never stand you up. Now, you said you wanted to see me, said you had something important to tell me. What is so important?" He had a slightly teasing tone in his voice, letting her know that he was truly interested, but wanted to get her to do something.
She pulled away slightly, making him loosen his arms. She turned her head upwards to look at him, a smile placed onto her face. Whatever the news she wanted to give was, it obviously made her happy. She pulled out of Severus' arms completely and walked to the side of him. She touched his left forearm lightly, but pulled it away almost instantly. She held the hand that had touched him close, almost as if she had been burned. She looked up again. Severus' face was turned in her direction. "Severus…What is on your forearm? I felt a great and powerful evil just now. Why did I feel such evil on you?" Her voice sounded scared, becoming softer from the feelings of death and terror she got when she touched his arm. It frightened her to feel such a thing on Severus.
"Remember how I told you that I had something to tell you as well?" Severus asked. Kelsey just nodded, her eyes slowly widening as she watched him. "Well…I'm…"
He didn't get a chance to finish as she interrupted him, "You're a Death Eater!" She didn't even make it a question, she just shouted it out. Severus blanched when she yelled it out. He was scared from the sudden outburst that she gave.
He sighed quietly, too quietly for human ears. He just nodded, knowing there was no use in hiding it, but then remembered that Kelsey couldn't see his face, as she was blind. "Love…I am a Death Eater, but what I needed to tell you is…"
"I don't want to hear it Severus," Kelsey interrupted. "I've been betrayed by you Severus. You just betrayed my trust Severus. You know how important my trust is to me! You just made it to where I can't trust you. You work for that madman, you work for that Voldemort! I can't trust you anymore Severus; hell, I don't even know who you are anymore. I have nothing to say to you except, stay away from me!" She then backed up several steps and apparated out. She may not have been able to see, but she could still apparate thanks to her little Keltensal.
Severus stood where Kelsey had left him. He was stunned and hurt. The look of horror on her face just wrenched his heart out. He felt the twisting pain from what she said to him. He also apparated off, barely concentrating enough to keep from splinching himself. He managed to find his way to Spinner's End. He just stumbled to his house and almost fell on the steps to his door. His heart was squeezing on him so hard that he almost didn't make it into the house to fall over when the door was closed. Tears were leaking out of the corners of his onyx eyes leaving tear tracks down his already pale cheeks. He was hunched over onto the floor, using his elbows to prop him up. He had his eyes squeezed such tightly and his hands balled into fists. "Why…Why couldn't you have listened? I wanted you to know that I was becoming a spy. That I was letting myself get used this way just to protect you. Why couldn't you have just listened and let us work it out?" The tears just poured even harder and faster after he choked out those words. He just hit the wooden floor a couple of times, trying to calm himself down, but it proved to be pointless. He just stayed there, letting all the hurt from the few seconds it took Kelsey to tell him what she did, pull at his heart and body.
End Flashback
While he had been remembering the whole thing from fifteen years earlier, Severus had made it to his dungeon quarters. It was almost as if he was in a trance like state as he made his way down. He stated the password to the portrait that guarded his rooms and walked in. He faintly heard the portrait ask him if he was alright, but he just ignored it. He knew what the answer would have been and he didn't feel like talking to a portrait at that moment. He just made his way to the armchair he had sitting in front of the empty fireplace. The armchair was made from Beech wood and covered in a soft velvet black fabric. It was thick and soft. It was one of Severus' favourite chairs and he collapsed straight into the chair, letting it just give around him. He felt the upholstery just come around him and hug him close. His eyes were just focused on the letter in his hands. "Why did you suddenly have to come back into my life? After all these years, why did you come back?" He finally just turned the letter over and opened the envelope, pulling out an aged sheet of parchment. Severus was quite hesitant when he opened it, but he did so anyways. When he opened it, he read it, staring at the handwriting he hadn't seen in years.
Dear Severus,
I wanted to tell you that I still love you. I love you from deep within my heart and soul. After the whole thing with that mark you lost my trust, but you never lost my love. I don't like that you're a Death Eater, you know I have never liked the Death Eaters, but even at that, I still love you. I fell in love with you before I knew you were even a Death Eater. The only thing I can no longer do is place all my trust with you. I trusted you to not follow that evil man. Severus, you're the only person that I knew in school that didn't treat me differently for being blind. You stood by me, knowing and understanding what it was like to be an outcast. You didn't force me to be social; you just let me be when I needed it. But I still feel like I can't trust you anymore. It scares me to suddenly lose that very thing I had.
It has been three months since that night and I still think about you all the time. I feel horrible for just leaving, not even telling you what I wanted to tell you. But I was just appalled that the man I love could be someone who does such horrible things to people. It doesn't change the fact that I STILL want to tell you what I had been wanting to tell you then. I'm sorry for not telling you Severus. Please forgive me for just up and leaving like that. I don't like hurting you in such a way.
Severus, what I wanted to tell you that night three months ago was that I was two months pregnant. No, I have no lost the child, right now I'm five months along. I feel horrible for taking three months to tell you; though I get the feeling that it will take even longer. I'm not sure I'll even be able to force myself to send this letter. Severus, I meant it when I said I love you, and that's why I am doing this. I cannot, no I will not, allow our child to be sworn into Voldemort's circle. I know how he does things. If he has someone, he wants the whole family. He would want our child. I would not be able to live with myself if our child had to be sworn in as a Death Eater. I won't allow that to happen.
I do not know if the child is female or male, but I want your promise that you will not reveal the truth to Voldemort. I know you know Occlumency, so you can easily hide it from him. I don't want the child in his services Severus. I love you with all my heart and if you love me as well, then you can at least do this for me. I don't want you to come looking for me or the child, I've made sure that I will not be found. I am so sorry for not telling you Severus. I will promise you one thing however, I will name this child with the names we liked to talk about randomly all that time ago. I know you would be happy to at least have the child hold a name that you liked.
I still love you,
Kelsey Moore
Severus just stared at the letter, tears falling from his eyes. They ran down his high cheekbones and to his chin. Each tear slowly dripped off and landed onto the letter. What he had just read hurt him greatly. He now knew that he was or is a father, wasn't sure which. 'I have a child? But…What happened to my child? Was it a boy or a girl? Did she miscarry or was the child actually born? What happened? I need to know…I really need to know.' Severus knew that he couldn't just sit there and ask questions, he had to actually find out what happened to the child that Kelsey wrote about in her letter. He took a quick breath and stood up, knowing that even if Kelsey didn't want to see him, he had the right to know what happened to his child. He made his way to his door and just left his rooms, the letter having landed on the floor near his chair where he dropped it.
Defence Professor's Quarters
Kelsey sat on a couch that adorned the room. There were empty bookcases around the room. A coffee table sat in front of her and there were boxes around her. Everything the boxes were her possessions. She hadn't collected over the years, but she still had some knick knacks that needed their own place. Her legs were bent next to her, causing her feet to be hidden underneath her purple robes. In her hands she held a piece of parchment. It was aged and crumpled, it even had tear stains. She hugged it close, letting it be within her arms for a tiny bit. She then pulled it away, laying it on one of her legs. The Keltensal saw the distress that its mistress was in and just portrayed the image of the parchment into her owner's mind, allowing her to see what it said. Kelsey didn't necessarily need this, as she knew exactly what the parchment said. She had looked at it enough to know exactly what it was and had been there when it was created.
This image that was displayed in her mind was a birth certificate. It was the birth certificate that belonged to her child. She just took in what it said once again.
Name:
Last: Snape First: Jamison Middle: Erasmus
Birth date: August 4, 1980 Weight: .43 stones Height: 50.8 cm
Godmother: Lily Evans-Potter Godfather: James Potter
Father: Severus Faolan Snape Mother: Kelsey Alexandra Moore
Doctor: Michelle Kira Jacobs Hospital: St. Michaels
Kelsey looked away from the birth certificate, giving the single to her little pet that she didn't want to see the image of the certificate anymore. Tears were falling from her blind eyes, leaving salty tracks on her face. Just seeing the certificate that obviously belonged to her son pained her greatly. Her chest was heaving up and down from the tears she was shedding. "Oh my little Jamison, I miss you more than anything. I have wanted to hold you in my arms for the last fifteen years and have been denied that ability. James and Lily protected you so much. They went even further than I expected or than they should have. They truly loved you. I was SO stupid to give you to them. I miss you so much my little Jamison. Mummy misses you so much." She pulled the birth certificate to her chest again and started to cry harder, causing the tears to fall down even quicker than they had been before. Her mind pulled the memory from the day that Jamison was born from her mind. She remembered that day and just kept on crying.
Flashback
Kelsey fell backwards onto the pillows that were stacked behind her to keep herself propped up. There seemed to be no sound except for the sound of her own breath as she panted in exhaustion. It didn't take very long for the sound of crying to take over. The new sound was coming from an infant being held in the arms of her doctor. The child was screaming at the top of its lungs as she cut the umbilical cord, detaching mother and infant. The child was just shivering slightly, being cold. The doctor took the child and cleaned it off before wrapping it in a blue blanket. This doctor had black hair cut close to her head and a thin face that held an Asian appearance. This woman was Kelsey's doctor, Doctor Michelle Jacobs.
Michelle just walked over to the bed and smiled at Kelsey. "You have a son." She helped Kelsey carefully position the child in her arms. The blind woman was quite good at letting people force her into doing something, use to it by now. Kelsey took a hand and gently felt the face of the little boy that had stopped crying. Once he had been placed in Kelsey's arms he quieted, knowing the feeling of his mother. The doctor just left the room, letting Kelsey and her son be alone for a tiny bit.
She just let the Keltensal portray the image of her son to her. She saw that he was perfectly awake and looking right at her. He squirmed a bit, trying to get more comfortable. She repositioned her arms a bit and he settled down. She just let his eyes look at her and saw that they were a deep blue; the first thought in her mind was that they were blue from the deep part of the ocean. She could see little tuffs of hair that was a darker grey then hers sticking out from the top of his head. She smiled at that, glad to see that he had a chance at having her hair. She had originally thought that he would have had Severus' hair, but it was nice to see that it wasn't. She knew there was a chance that it might either darken or lighten over his life, but she could be happy for what she was seeing now. She just looked him over and saw a lightening bolt birthmark on his forehead. This was normal for the Moore family. They had the mark for generations and it was normal for a member of the family to have it. It was the first time in the family for a person to have it on their forehead, but she didn't question anyways, because she figured that he was allowed to be different.
Tears came to Kelsey's eyes as she saw her son's image. The little bubbles that looked like crystals just sat there in the corners of her eyes. "Oh Jamison, you are the most beautiful thing your mother has ever seen. You are going to look so much like your father when you grow up." She started to really cry at that thought. It hurt her to think about Severus still, but she knew that it was how things had been determined.
A few moments later two people walked into the room. One of these people had red hair and the other had messy black hair. These two people were Lily Evans and James Potter. They were two of Kelsey's friends, but nobody knew. They had kept their friendship a secret because of who Kelsey was and how anti-social she had been when in school. Lily walked up to Kelsey and looked down at Jamison. "He is adorable Kelsey. He'll grow up looking handsome."
Kelsey nodded. "If he could ever see what he really looked like." She choked a little at that statement. It was painful for her to watch what was happening.
James walked up next to Lily. "Kelsey…Are you sure you want to go through with this. I know we agreed that we would take your son and file him as our own, but we don't have to if you don't want to." He was giving Kelsey the option, but she just shook her head. She had her own thing going on in her mind.
"I can't keep him James. I want to so badly, but I can't keep Jamison," Kelsey said. She was still crying, her son shifting in her arms from the crying his mother was doing.
Lily set a hand on Kelsey's shoulder. "Kelsey, we won't cut you out of his life. He's still your son no matter what."
"Take him," Kelsey said. "I can't hold him much longer, or I won't want to give him up. I want to keep him so badly, but I can't. He'll be safer without me. If I'm ever found I can't have him with me." Lily complied and took Jamison, frowning as Kelsey looked away from him.
Right then Michelle came back into the room. "Alright, I filled out your son's birth certificate, the real one. You'll just need to put his name in. I won't file this, because they'll send one to Severus and you made it clear that it can't happen." She set the paper down on the bedside table next to Kelsey. Kelsey just nodded and didn't look at it, she would fill it out later. Michelle looked at Lily and James. "I just need the information for the fake one."
James noticed that Lily was looking at Kelsey with concern and wouldn't answer. "His name will be Harold James Potter."
Michelle nodded. "Anybody you want as his godparents?"
Lily finally tuned in. "We hadn't decided actually."
"Make it Sirius," Kelsey suddenly said. "He would like being your child's godparent."
James looked at Kelsey and nodded, he was going to let her decide, as she chose them to be her son's godparents. "Then it is Sirius."
"Do you want this to be his birthday?" Michelle asked, writing down Sirius' name in the godfather bracket of the birth certificate.
"We talked with Kelsey before he was born, we will have it be July thirty-first. It will be in remembrance of our child." She looked down, her own eyes beginning to tear up. Michelle nodded and finished the certificate, handing it to James. She then left the four alone, letting them all just be alone together again. She knew what had happened to James and Lily and how much they were hurting from it. She hated seeing her friends in such pain, but there was nothing she could do about it.
James wrapped his arms around Lily's shoulders. "It's okay Lily. It will be okay."
Kelsey looked down. "I feel like I put the stress on you, but I know I didn't. I'm sorry that you had that miscarriage Lily."
"It was so painful," Lily said, tears falling freely from her emerald eyes. "Everything seemed to be fine and then I lost it. It…It was so hard to take. It wasn't your fault at all, I just wasn't meant to carry children to term."
"You have a child," Kelsey said, looking in the general direction of her own son. She then looked away, resisting the urge to want to hold him again. She felt that it wasn't right for her to even look at him at that moment. She knew she couldn't have her own child, but she knew that he would at least be in a loving household with her two good friends. It was the least she could ask for her own son.
She heard Lily give a big sob. "I know, but even at that, I'm still mourning. We lost our child." She just held onto Jamison like a lifeline. She looked at Kelsey, a grateful look on her face. She seemed to be incredibly grateful to Kelsey for what she was doing.
Kelsey just sighed. "Thank you two for doing this, I know you'll take care of him like he is really your own."
End Flashback
Kelsey got forced out of her memories by a rapping on her door. She heard the knock and recognized it as one belonging to Severus. It had been years since she had last heard that knock, but it was forever burned into her memory. She had been expecting the knock, knowing that Severus would want to talk to her as soon as he read the letter. She wished that she wouldn't have to talk to him, but she wasn't going to get a choice in the matter. She had been around Severus for years and he would make sure he got answers to questions if he had them.
She moved her legs and put them on the ground. Using great care she pulled herself onto her feet and walked towards her door, being careful not to walk into anything. She wasn't use to the room just yet and could injure herself by walking. She found the door and opened it. On the other side was Severus. "Severus?" She was looking at him and stepped aside. "Come in." She let him into her room.
Severus carefully walked in and waited for her to close the door. He then turned and looked at her. "You recognized my knock." He knew that she would, or at least he had hoped she would.
Kelsey nodded, turned around carefully to face him. "I could never forget your knock. Now, I believe you're here because you read the letter." She hoped that's what the real reason was, but she wasn't too sure about it. She was close to Severus and it made her heart jump. The poor organ wanted her to reach out and touch the only person she had ever loved, but she kept her hands to herself, wanting to not give into the urge that she had wished for.
"Yes I do," Severus replied. He had nodded as well, but he had to remember that Kelsey couldn't see him. It was something that he sometimes didn't remember, as she would a lot of times act as if she saw like a normal everyday person. "What happened to our child? Is the child alive? What happened?"
Kelsey frowned and looked down at the ground for a moment. She then looked up and into Severus' eyes, not letting her sadness show on her face. "It was a boy and he's still alive. I had named Lily and James Potter to be his godparents. I had to give him up when he was born, because I was afraid that I would be found. I can let them take me, but I wouldn't let them have my son."
"Where is he?" Severus asked. He took a step closer, trying to be menacing to Kelsey. She wouldn't let him intimidate her. She also knew him too well to be intimidated like that.
"He is somewhere safe," Kelsey stated.
He looked at her and sighed. "I'm sorry for hurting you," he apologized. His expression turned to one of sadness. "I wish I knew where and who he was."
"This is against what I would do normally," Kelsey said. "But I'll do it for you. Severus…He lives in the Muggle world. I didn't put there in the beginning; I gave him to some friends who died. His name is…Is…Harry Potter."
A/N: Here is the beginning of the rewrite, hope it is better. Hm…I think the life is getting interesting.
