Future Blues

Disclaimer: I don't own DB/Z/GT or the song Acoustic #3. Acoustic #3 is Goo Goo Dolls.

A.N. Originally this was just a one shot fic that I had done for the heck of it. Then after I started writing my Goka series and things started to take shape with that I decided that with a little work this story would work well with that. So anyway...I said all that to say this. "Future Blues" is now what you might would call a spin-off or maybe just another one-shot sequel in the Goka Series. As far as where it fits in the timeline...it's somewhere between the end of "Meet Goka" and the beginning of "Goka's Diary" and "Goka's Return".

It just occurred to me the other day that there had been know real explanation to why Mirai just showed up in Goka's Timeline besides that it was his Mother's dying wish, so I decided I would fix this up to tell that story. Hope everyone likes it.

They painted up your secrets

With the lies they told to you

And the least they ever gave you

Was the most you ever knew

Trunks was sitting in the car talking to his mother happily. She had decided to take him shopping for the first time in a while lately. Usually she had him stay home with someone, saying it was too dangerous. She had never told him why; she just said, "I'll tell you when you are a little older son."

His mother played around with the radio until she found a station she liked. There had been a song playing, but as the music faded away the sound of an excited man's voice came over the speaker with a little static in the background.

"Zzzz…This just came in….the androids have attacked yet another city. There are only a few survivors remaining, and rescuers are currently working to recover them as quickly as possible….zzzzz…click." Bulma shut the radio off and turned to look at Trunks who was staring at her with wide eyes.

"Mom, what's an…Android?" Trunks asked quizzically.

Bulma sighed, She had known she would have to tell him, she just wanted to protect him from ever knowing about the androids for as long as possible. She opened her mouth to speak, but before she could answer an explosion rocked a nearby city. She gasped and stopped the car abruptly and stared at the smoke rising from the once beautiful city.

"Trunks hang on, we're going back home!" Bulma said as she turned the car back in the direction of Capsule Corp. She was driving away when she saw a shadow flying over. Fearing the worse she sped up even faster and was startled to hear someone land in her backseat. She turned around fearfully only to see Gohan! She slammed on brakes again. And turned her head back to Gohan. "Gohan! What happened over there? What are you doing? And why DID YOU SCARE ME LIKE THAT!" Bulma shouted as she turned to see the teenage demi-saiyan. Gohan chuckled and put his hand behind his head in the usual Son style.

"Well, Bulma, the androids attacked that city over there, and I was doing some shopping for mom. And as for why I scared you…well…I didn't mean to…honest!"

"Ok so what are you doing over here if the androids are over there?" She asked.

"Well, by the time I got out of that store, the androids had already left, I was on the way home when I saw you guys. Is everything ok? How you doing Trunks?" He said leaning over the seat to see Trunks.

"I'm ok Gohan, but…" Trunks hesitated.

"What is it?" Gohan and Bulma asked.

"I still don't know what an android is?" He answered.

Gohan sweatdropped and looked to Bulma, who was looking a little pale. "Bulma, you still haven't told him?" He asked.

Bulma shook her head and decided now was as good a time as any to tell him.

She went through the whole story about the androids as Trunks sat quietly taking everything in.

Bulma finished, and became silent. Gohan took this as an opportunity to talk to the boy.

"Trunks everything is going to be ok, I'm still training, and when you get old enough you can train too. We are going to get them Trunks. Don't worry."

Bulma looked up as he finished and gave him a grateful smile. Then turned back to Trunks. "So do you still want to go shopping with me or do you want to go home?" She asked?

Trunks thought for a minute. "Let's go, Gohan do you want to come with us too?" He asked excitedly, determined that what he just heard was not going to ruin his day.

Gohan looked surprised, but gave a nod as to say he would go. I've still got to pick up some things for my mom anyway. So yeah, let's go."

"YAY!" Screamed Trunks as Bulma turned the car back around to go to town.

-000-

And I wonder where these dreams go

When the world gets in your way

What's the point in all this screaming?

No one's listening anyway

-000-

Trunks had been knocked out; he woke up looking around for Gohan.

"Gohan? Oh no, Gohan. Why did you go alone!" Trunks screamed looking around for any sign of his friend.

"He must have thought I would get in the way…" He said to himself as he flew off to the now smoking city. "Gohan…Gohan…" He circled around for a while in the pouring rain until he saw something orange lying in the mud. "Gohan!" He said as he darted to the ground quickly and walked over to the lifeless form. He could already feel the tears stinging his eyes as he feared the worst. He reached Gohan's dead body, he didn't even have to check, he knew he was dead. Suddenly, a pain like he had never known before came over his body and he screamed with rage as he became engulfed in his emotions. It felt as if his body was being torn apart as power rushed through his veins like he had never experienced before. He had become what he had wanted for so long. He was a super saiyan!

-000-

Your voice is small and fading

And you hide in here unknown

-000-

Trunks had awoken in the recovery room; he had gone after the androids again and had been less than successful. His eyes opened and he saw his mother there smiling at him.

He said, "Mom, it's really you!"

"Of course it's me, someone has to stay alive and take care of you guys." She replied.

"I'm sorry mom, as always you were right. I shouldn't have tried to take them on, they were to strong." He said roughly.

"You're alive, you know that's all that matters to me right now." She answered.

"Mom? I think I'm ready to take a trip in the time machine if it's ready." He said.

""Trunks, you don't even know if you have any arms and legs left under that blanket, but you're saying you're ready to pilot the time machine? First things first, ok? Why don't you just concentrate on healing up for a couple of weeks then we'll worry about getting the antidote to Goku." She said firmly.

Trunks knew she was right so he decided to let it go…for now.

-000-

And your mother loves your father

Cause she's got no where to go

And she wonders where these dreams go

Cause the world got in her way

-000-

Trunks woke up with sweat covering his body. He had barely managed to keep himself from screaming. He was having that dream again. It had been three years ago and the images of Gohan's lifeless body still haunted him.

Bulma awoke at the sound of her son's rapid breathing and immediately knew he had been having the same nightmare again. She rose and moved to his side putting a comforting hand on his shoulder. Trunks leaned over and done something he had not done since he was a child, he cried on his mother's shoulder.

Bulma sat holding her son as he cried. As she held him she thought of Vegeta, she wondered if he were still alive would he have ever let her hold him like this. She knew she still loved him, she always would, but she also knew he wasn't coming back. She felt tears swelling in her eyes, but she shook it away. She couldn't think about that right now, Trunks needed her.

-000-

What's the point in ever trying?

Nothing's changing anyway

They press their lips against you

And you love the lies they say

And I tried so hard to reach you

But you're falling anyway

-000-

Trunks had stopped crying now and was just sitting there letting his mother hold him. He looked up to see her crystal blue eyes staring into his. She smiled at him and he watched her. "Mom, I'm just not sure anymore…I can't beat those androids. I'm trying…I'm giving it all I've got, but it's not enough…nothing's changing. The androids are still here destroying the planet, Gohan and the other's are still gone, and it feels like there is nothing I can do to stop it!" Trunks blurted out.

Bulma looked at him sadly, she knew how discouraged he must feel. She didn't know what to say or do to help him feel better. His pride was broken, and the only thing that could heal that was time. Instead of saying anything right then, she leaned in and kissed him softly on the cheek and tried to give him an encouraging smile. She placed her hand on his other cheek gently rubbing away a tear that had escaped.

"Trunks, it's going to be ok, I know you're scared, and you're doubting yourself right now. But I still believe in you, I know you can do this."

Trunks looked at her, he wished he could believe everything she just said, but he was still unsure.

-000-

And you know I see right through you

When the world gets in the way

What's the point in all this screaming?

You're not listening anyway

-000-

Trunks was getting his things together to leave for the past. He packed his capsules carefully and put them in his coat pocket. He picked up his sword and walked out to the time machine to see his mother writing something on the side, 'HOPE!' Trunks smiled and walked up to face his mother.

"Gosh, you don't know how proud I am of you for doing this. You look so handsome Trunks Briefs! I am going to miss you son!"

He took the bottle from her hand, " I guess this is the antidote for Goku?"

"Yeah, do me a favor…don't drop it?" Bulma tried to say jokingly, but her voice was etched with concern.

"Right, stay out of trouble while I'm gone, ok?" He said giving her one last smile before jumping into the time machine.

"Sure you know me…" She responded.

"Yeah…that's why I'm worried." He said.

"Trunks, I want you back!" She screamed.

"Trunks looked down at her and waved goodbye, "I love you." He whispered before pulling the canopy down.

"I love you too Trunks!" She screamed before he got the canopy all the way down.

She stood and watched as the machine rose into the air, "If you only knew how much." She whispered as the machine disappeared from her sight.

"Oh dear, he's in your hands now Goku." She whispered before going back inside to wait for her son's return.

-000-

"Finally, this world can have peace." Trunks thought as he gave one last look to where he had just sent a ki blast to destroy Cell. He couldn't help but be overcome by a smile as he realized his dreams had finally come true. He had destroyed the Androids and Cell. He had rid his world of the terror that had plagued it for so long. Words could not express how he felt right then, so he just took a moment to just smile and enjoy it.

That is before he realized just how much work still remained to be done. He groaned a little at the thought of just how much rebuilding was going to need to be done. "Oh well...guess I better get going. That work isn't going to do itself." Trunks said to himself as he took off into the air to go back to Capsule Corp.

-000-

5 Years Later

Trunks rushed home quickly; he could feel his Mother's energy dropping steadily and he wanted to be there so he could see her one last time. Tears formed in his eyes as he thought about the whole situation. His Mother was dying, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. She was getting old, and she had worked herself too hard for too long trying to put this world back together and it was taking it's toll on her.

He dropped to the ground steadily as he come to the door of the newly rebuilt Capsule Corp. He ran inside and to his Mother's Bed where she was growing weaker by the moment.

She could barely keep her eyes open and she did all she could to give him a smile as she heard Trunks enter the room.

Trunks couldn't help but smile back a little even through his tears. That was his Mom, even if things weren't going so good she would always try to give him a smile to make things seem a little better. He was going to miss not being able to see that smile anymore once she was gone. His heart began to break just at the thought of it as he reached over to hold her hand one last time.

"Trunks..." She whispered.

Trunks sniffed a little bit as he tried to control his emotions; he felt like a little child again when he would have nightmares and his Mother would always be the one to comfort him. She had always been there for him, but now...

Trunks shook the thought out of his mind as he finally got a hold of himself enough to answer softly, "Yes Mother."

"I want you to do something for me." She whispered still with the soft smile grazing her face.

"Anything." He answered as he looked into her eyes that even after all these years were still so full of love.

"After I'm gone I want you to go back to the timeline where your father is." She answered.

Trunks looked at her strangely, "You want me to leave? But Mother...there is still so much work to do and..."

"Trunks..." She interrupted softly and Trunks stopped his line of questioning immediately before Bulma continued, "...after I'm gone you'll be all alone in this world. You won't have any family left here and I can't bear the thought of leaving you here like that all alone. So I want you to go back." Bulma saw the questions that still lie in his eyes so she continued, "Don't worry about the little bit of work that is left. Everything is nearly done here and what is left can be left to the people of Earth to take care of. I've already built a few things that will come in handy for them and I have left explicit instructions with my lab assistants for them to carry out after I am gone. I've also gotten the time machine ready for one last journey so that you can take it to be with your father. Please Son...don't deny a women her last wish." She finally ended with a smile that for a moment almost seem to be a smirk.

Trunks couldn't find anyway to argue with that. It seemed his Mother had taken care of everything and wanted so badly for him to go back. He couldn't deny her that peace. "Ok then...I won't." He finally answered softly and placed a gentle kiss on the hand he had been holding.

"I love you so much, and I want you to know that I couldn't have asked for a better son. You have made me proud and I'll always love you." Bulma said as a few tears began to run down her cheeks.

Trunks brushed them away and placed tender kisses on her face where the tears had been, "I love you to. You're the best Mom."

They sat there for a few moments in silence before Trunks asked, "Are you scared?" He felt like a child for a moment for asking such a question, but he just felt he had to.

"No..." She answered, "I'm finally going to see him again. How I've missed him."

Trunks didn't have to think hard to figure out who "him" was. 'Dad...'

She seemed to smile a little brighter if it were possible and he knew she was thinking of him.

"I can see him Trunks...he's waiting for me." She said with a smile. "Goodbye son. I love you."

"I love you too." He said before she closed her eyes and felt as the last bit of life left her. He placed one more gentle kiss on her hand that now seemed to be growing colder before getting up to make arrangements for her burial and his journey back to the past.

"Always Mom. I'll always love you." He whispered to the now lifeless body before leaving the room.
