A/N: I wanted to put this out on FF.N this quickly so that I would be motivated to finish the story, but as always your comments and feedback are very important as well, so don’t hesitate to tell me what you think

Sarah wrapped the small boy in her arms. The child was quiet for a moment and asked what was wrong. Sarah pulled him away from her so that she could look at his face. Toby’s blonde hair was tousled from sleep, and he had his pajama top on backwards. She tucked a strand of hair back behind his ear.

“ Darling, I hate to tell you this, but Mom and Daddy…they aren’t going to be coming home. ”

“ Why not, they said they would. Didn‘t they? ” Toby asked, confusion starting to come over his face. The seven year old had been staying at his sister’s house while their parents went on a small weekend vacation.

“ Toby, it’s going to be hard for you to understand, but I’ll try to explain. Okay? ” He nodded his head slowly, and followed Sarah as she led him by the hand into the living room. She sat in a big armchair and motioned for him to sit on her lap.

“Remember a few months ago when your turtle died, Toby? And we had to bury it? ” He nodded again, and said he did.

“ Okay, and you remember what Daddy told you, about…when things die? ”

“ Uh huh, he said that when things die they go to Heaven. To live with God.” Toby answered, and Sarah gave a small smile.

“ But what does that have to do with Mommy and Daddy, Sarah? ”

“ Well, Mommy and Daddy are going to be living with God now, in Heaven. ”

“ Why! ” the boy was getting more than a little confused now, he was getting scared. He didn’t understand.

“ They have to live in Heaven now, because they had…they had a car accident. That’s why they wont be able to come back home. “

“ What about me? What’s going to happen to me? “ Toby shouted and he started to cry. He clutched at Sarah’s gown front, and she hugged him tightly.

“ Shh, shh. It’s gonna to be okay. You’re going to live with me now. I’ll take care of you.“

“But… I want Mommy and Daddy! ” he cried and sobs wrecked his small frame. Sarah stayed up the whole night with him, trying to comfort him, trying to comfort herself as well.

I can wait on comforting myself, she thought as she stroked Toby’s hair. He was exhausted, the terrible news had drained him, as did his tears. Soon he was in a deep, weary sleep, and Sarah put him in his bed. She waited a few moments, so that she could just watch him sleep. Sarah watched the small child that she was now completely responsible for.

Sarah went into her room, and as she lay down on her bed the reality of the situation and the death of her father and step-mother fell on her. She, too, curled up and wept.
