Mickey Mouse walked out of his dressing room in the House of Mouse and towards the stage to greet his audience. Minnie was waiting outside of his
dressing room, an unfavorable look on her face. She stood promptly in front of the stage entrance, arms crossed. But Mickey was unfazed.
“Aw, c’mon, Min. I gotta get out there and introduce the next cartoon.”
The female mouse glared at him, uncrossed her arms and balled up her fists tightly at her sides.
“MICKEY MOUSE! YOU FORGOT AGAIN, DIDN’T YOU??”
At the front desk, Daisy and Donald Duck flinched. Their friend hardly ever lost her temper, and at very
least to this degree. The ducks shot each other fearful looks.
“Boy is HE gonna get it.” Muttered Donald, and Daisy quickly shushed him, a finger at her beak. Mickey rolled his eyes in annoyance.
“Shucks, can’t it wait until the next commercial break?”
Minnie looked puzzled.
“The WHAT?”
Mickey chuckled uneasily.
“Uh, nevermind. Just let me by, we can sort this out later, can’t we?”
Minnie growled, threw up her hands and stormed off.
“FINE! I’ll just go outside and celebrate ALL BY MYSELF! What do you care anyway, you...you..OOH!”
The front doors of the House of Mouse slammed shut behind her, as the two ducks and even Mickey this time, winced. Mickey’s face fell.
“Gosh, I wonder what HER problem is.”
He shrugged and walked onto the stage to greet the waiting toons. Daisy and Donald exchanged sad looks and promptly went back to work, certain the two
would work things out. They HAD to, after all, they were THE ideal couple in all of Toontown, they had to make it through somehow. There was hardly a day
that went by over the past several decades that they weren’t together. No one could imagine otherwise for them. Minnie and Mickey Mouse just fit together,
like peanut butter and jelly. Daisy let out a sigh and picked up the ringing phone sitting on the front desk.
“House of Mouse, Daisy Duck speaking, how can I help you?”
Out in the House of Mouse parking lot, the club’s valet, Max Goof, whistled non-chalantly, hands shoved in his pockets. Once the show started, not
many folks showed up, so there wasn’t much for him to do but hang out and wait for closing time. The sound of slamming doors startled him, as he whirled
around to see Minnie storming out of the club, fuming.
“What’s up, Minnie? You seem a little, um...peeved.”
Minnie said nothing as she walked past him, and plunked herself down at the curb, supporting her head in her hands, elbows resting on her knees, and sighed
heavily. Max frowned and sat next to her at the curb.
“Hey, what’s wrong? You wanna talk about it?”
“Here’s a cartoon starring me and my gal, Minnie!”
Mickey exclaimed, introducing the cartoon, as the club exploded in applause. Up above the seats, Horace whacked the projector with a large mallet, as a
Mickey and Minnie cartoon rolled. Mickey walked off the stage and looked around.
“Hey, Goofy, have you seen Minnie?”
The tall, clumsy best friend of the mouse shook his head and skated out to the toon sitting area with a tray, followed by a train of penguins, who also held
trays up. Mickey looked worried.
“Gosh, I wonder where she went off to. I hope she’s not still ticked at me, whatever I did.”
“I can’t believe he would forget our anniversary! Today was supposed to be special, but he can’t even remember one little important event in our
relationship! Heaven forbid anything come between him and his precious club! Honestly! He can be such a jerk sometimes!”
Max sighed and put an arm around her comfortingly.
“Come on, Minnie. I’m sure he didn’t mean to forget. He’s just busy running this place, that’s all. You know he loves you.”
Minnie sighed and stood up.
"Yeah, maybe you’re right Max. Thanks for the pep-talk.”
Max smiled and stood.
“Anytime, Min.”
The two stepped back up onto the sidewalk, when the ground began to shake beneath them violently.
“W-w-what was that?” Minnie stuttered, nearly falling off the curb, as Max grabbed her and pulled her back up onto the sidewalk.
Before he could answer, everything shook, the ground, the buildings, as both exchanged looks and ran for the doorway, shouting,
“EARTHQUAKE!”
“Okay, gang, this one goes out to my girl, Minnie. Hit it boys!”
Mickey signaled for the Quackstreet Boys to begin playing the song “My Girl,” when a violent earthquake shattered the entire club.
“Whoa!”
Mickey gasped as the club began to literally fall apart, and fearfully he turned to the other toons.
“Earthquake! Run!”
The crowd instantly ran for the front door, screaming in fear. Minnie and Max dodged the mob of toons running out of the double doors, as Minnie’s eyes
instinctively scanned the crowd for her sweetheart.
“Mickey! Where are you? Has anyone seen him?”
Minnie tried desperately to shout over the screaming, panicked mob, to no avail. Goofy spotted the two pinned in the corner behind one of the glass doors,
and ran back to them. Grunting with effort, he managed to pull the door far enough away from the wall for the two to get away. Minnie peered back at the
club pensively. Goofy looked back at her and shouted over the chaos.
“Minnie! We have to get out of here! The place is gonna fall over!”
She started to turn back as if to head back into the club.
“I think Mickey is still in there, I didn’t see him come out.”
Claribelle appeared, and grabbed Minnie, dragging her out of harm’s way, while the mouse kicked and screamed.
“No! No! I have to find Mickey! Put me DOWN, Claribelle!”
Ignoring her, the gossipy cow ran for the group of toons standing across the street from the club, as the building reduced to a pile of debris, and everyone
sighed in relief that they were safe.
The toons looked around for Mickey, but he was nowhere to be found. Claribelle walked over to the group, and lowered Minnie to the ground, and she
instantly collapsed into sobs. The others had to turn away because they hated facing the hysterical Minnie, but even worse was facing the fact that Mickey
was gone, buried under the massive rubble that had once been the happy toon club everyone loved.
