Told You So

A/N: Shounen ai, hell yes...

The American boy had a sleekness about him as he moved that Wufei found so invitingly irresistible.

Wufei watched Duo run to Heero's side, chestnut braid flying out behind him, chattering madly to the colbalt-eyed soldier. Heero muttered something and Duo's face fell, but the Deathscythe pilot merely grinned and glomped onto Heero's arm. Heero sighed.

Wufei watched from the shadows, dressed all in black, marveling from a distance at this amazing boy who didn't seem to have changed at all in the year since the Chinese pilot had last seen him. His raven-black hair fell in his eyes, loose partly to keep him hidden from Duo and Heero, partly to shadow the tears glimmering in his oynx eyes. Bangs brushed those salty tears gently and Wufei looked up again.

"I'm sorry I was so cold to you," Wufei whispered. "Look what I've done. I'm happy if you're happy, my Duo. But I think you've made the wrong choice." And it's my fault.

The American cheerfully clung to Heero's arm, but nothing seemed to elicit a response from the Perfect Soldier. He removed himself from Duo's grip and back away, leaving the stunned Deathscythe pilot staring at the floor.

Duo walked dejectedly over to the refreshments table and poured himself a glass of red punch, downing it quickly. Then another, and another.

Wufei could see, even from across the room, how Duo's hands were shaking. Heero had went over to Relena and was having a quiet conversation with her. Wufei tried to watch both happening without little success, when suddenly Heero let out a short laugh and smiled at Relena.

Duo, observing the pair from over by the table, quietly set down his glass and walked away. Nobody noticed, not even Quatre, who was in a corner with Trowa, nor Relena and Heero. Wufei sadly watched the American rush outside into the snow, without a jacket or a backward glance.

Wufei pulled his trenchcoat tighter around his body and hurried after his friend. The footprints outside led around the back of the house. The Chinese pilot slowly followed the prints until he stood in the backyard of the Peacecraft mansion. Duo sat on a bench in the garden with his back to Wufei, hunched over.

Wufei wondered what he was doing, following Duo. What would he say? He knew Duo had been with Heero for a full year now, and the feelings the American had for Wufei probably didn't exist anymore...but Wufei had thought about the decision he had made for a long time, and now regretted it.

He couldn't leave Duo out here alone. Whether Duo wanted to see him or not.

/There's no cure
I am sure/

Wufei stepped up behind Duo and placed his coat around his shivering friend's shoulders. Duo did not react to the newcomer, just stared at the ground.

Wufei didn't say a word, just sat down beside his friend. Tears fell from Duo's eyes, hidden behind his chestnut bangs, and fell into the snow. The Chinese pilot gently reached behind the bangs and wiped those tears away with his gloved hand.

Duo's sobs began to quiet, and Wufei laid his hand on the American's back, rubbing it soothingly. The chestnut-haired pilot sniffled once more before looking up at his mysterious benefactor.

Wufei looked intently into Duo's face, trying to read the emotions there. Duo's violet eyes were empty and sad. The American furrowed his brow and stared hard at his friend. The raven-black hair hung loose from its familiar ponytail and fell into Wufei's line of sight, but his oynx eyes could still be seen peeking out. Those eyes locked with Duo's and the American mouthed his long-gone friend's name.

With shaking fingers, Wufei reached up and tucked a strand of hair behind his ear, them brushed Duo's snowy bangs away from his pale face. The tears had partly frozen in the bitter night air. Wufei removed his gloves and touched a hesitant finger to Duo's face, warming the shimmering ice and melting it with his gentle caress. The expression of confusion on Duo's face turned to one of shame, and then wonder. The Chinese boy raised his left hand and cupped Duo's face in his palms. Duo closed his eyes, then opened them again, staring into Wufei's soul. After what seemed like eternity Wufei leaned forward and brought his lips to meet Duo's in a hesitant brush that quickly became a passionate kiss. Duo's slim arms encircled Wufei's waist and pressed into him until Wufei lay on his back on the bench with Duo atop him, kissing him fiercely and apologizing at the same time. Wufei's hands held Duo's back, holding him close, making the moment last. His hands turned icy at the slick feel of Duo's shirt, cold and wet from the gentle snowfall and the powder on the bench. Still the kiss did not break, Duo mumbled something as his tongue sought entrance into Wufei's open mouth, and the Chinese boy had no objection. Hot tears still ran from the lively violet eyes and fell salty against Wufei's lips and the snow had begun to fall in bigger flakes, catching in Wufei's straight hair and Duo's braid. The braid itself was draped over the American's shoulder and brushed against the ground. When the moment ended Wufei felt a slight twinge of regret; Duo lifted his head from the Chinese pilot's chest and looked carefully at his friend's face.

Not a word was spoken between them until Wufei finally said, "I was wrong. I'm sorry, Duo."

Duo managed a slight grin and hugged Wufei tightly from where he lay. "I was wrong too. I just...didn't want to beleive it." He sat up and pulled the coat around his shoulders. "I missed you. Wufei."

"No silly nicknames?" The other boy questioned, also coming to a sitting position.

Duo smiled weakly.

Wufei stood and extended a hand to Duo to help him to his feet. "Let's get you back inside."

The American gratefully accepted the assistance and Wufei reached up to brush the remaining tears from Duo's face. "Ah, Duo. I've missed you...can you forgive me?"

"For what? For leaving?"

"For taking so long to fall in love with you."

Duo gently kissed Wufei's forehead. "If you can forgive me for taking second-best."

Wufei sighed in releif. "I guess we'll have to forgive each other."

"That won't be too hard, will it?" Duo threw his arms around his friend and Wufei reveled in the
warmth and spirit of the American.

"No," we whispered. "I don't think it'll be hard at all."
