The Long Day Is Over

Chapter 3: Smith & Wesson

7:07

Jordan stepped out of her office into what seemed like a dull world in

slow motion. News about Peter's death swept through the morgue like a

contagious and deadly virus. Every jog reduced to a walk, every breath taken

was turned into a sigh.

Even Jordan herself found the usual spring taken from her step. She

never really talked to Peter before, except for that night when he was really

sick and they were snowed in at the morgue. The night that Elaine died. Peter's

death didn't hit Jordan as hard as Elaine's did. Jordan actually cried when she

died, which was strange because Jordan despised Elaine A LOT. Then why didn't

she cry for Peter?

Jordan always thought Garrett hired Peter because Peter had some

problems. Garrett was always a sucker for problematic people... including her.

If there was anything that Jordan didn't have, it definitely wasn't problems.

Nigel was on the computer as usual typing and clicking away. "Ay,

did you find out anything about what the knife is?" She asked hopefully.

"Yes I did, it's a Smith and Wesson..."

"I work better with pictures and descriptions, Nige," she explained.

Nigel printed out a picture of the knife and handed it to her.

"Thanks," she said, "Now the next step is to find this damn thing, and crack

this case..."

"Sounds like a plan..." Garrett said over her shoulder.

"Macy, if you need to talk, we can do it later... right now I need to

go do something," Jordan said. He nodded and she brushed past him towards the

elevator.

As she slung her bag over her shoulder she saw a man she had never seen

before step off the elevator. "Excuse me can I help you?" She asked.

"Uh, yes... my brother works here... I figured I would stop by and

maybe we could do lunch..." the man replied.

Bug walked by and Jordan grabbed him by the shirt. "Hey, Bug, can you

handle this? I really need to go..."

Crime Scene: Peter

7:15

The crime scene was Peter's apartment. She stepped in among a few

detectives and crime scene photographers. Then she saw the one person she

didn't expect to see.

"Detective Haley... it's been a long time..." She said

Detective Haley turned around; he knew that voice. "Not long enough,

Cavanaugh..."

Jordan was a little embarrassed talking to him like they were long time

rivals, or something. She hadn't seen him since the night she had her run in

with the "digger" serial killer. She smiled inside to think that she used to

wave a little thing going on with Haley; Woody was her new lovable detective.

"So, this isn't a suicide case anymore, eh?" Haley asked

"Nope... there must have been someone else here," she explained, "we

have to find something he could have possibly hit his head on, and we have to

find this." Jordan said as she handed him the photograph of the Smith and

Wesson hunting knife.

"Something he could hit his head on," He echoed, "that could be

anything..."

Jordan looked at him awkwardly. "Damn, and I thought I was

pessimistic..." she declared.

Jordan pulled on a pair of white rubber gloves. "So, did you know this

Peter guy?" Drew asked.

"Hmm... someone's getting a little curious..." she said, "no, not

really. Garrett and Dr. Stiles seem to know the most about him, but then again,

Stiles knows everything about everyone..."

"Yeah... and Garrett's a pain in the ass," He muttered under his breath.

"He's not that bad... He just has to constantly bite us in the ass to

make sure were doing our jobs right..." Jordan explained.

"Yeah but didn't he make you think he was the biggest jerk in the world

when you first met him?"

"Don't you think you're getting a little too harsh here?" Jordan said,

sticking up for Garrett.

"Well, didn't you?"

"Yes, I did. but that was because he was totally being an ass and

trying to get me to rat out my boss. The whole thing almost lost me my life..."

She said finally.

"I'd like to know exactly how that happened..."

"Alcohol... sleeping pills... end of story."

Drew looked at her with a little grin across his face. "Must not be a

subject you bring up every day..." He said to himself.

"Death is not exactly a subject you bring up over coffee, Haley," She

growled.

"But yet you work at a morgue... hmmm, am I the only one sensing the

irony here?"

"Apparently."

"Oh come on Jordan! Don't you ever feel like you need to talk to

someone about death and stuff? Do you ever just want to cry? And don't tell me

you don't..."

Jordan sat and thought for the longest time. Sometimes she did just

want to talk to someone about how she feels or how things just... are. She

constantly was reminded of the missing piece in her life. The fact that she

grew up with only one parent wasn't a comfort, even if her mother was a danger

to her. At least her mother understood.

Boston Morgue

Bug stepped into Lily's office. She was standing next to the window

looking out upon the Boston skyline. "Lily..."

She jumped. "Bug, you frightened me!"

"Oh... Sorry. I have someone for you to see..." Bug told her.

"Lily looked a bit confused, she had no idea who it could have been.

"Who?"

"His name is Jai Alexander. He's Peter's half-brother. Apparently he

didn't know Peter was dead and he came in her to ask peter if he wanted to do

lunch..." Bug explained.

Lily's face fell. "You've got to be kidding me..." She put a hand over

her forehead. "It's the Christmas gift that just keeps giving..."She said

sarcastically.

She drew in a deep breath. "Alright... bring him in. I'll be back in a

minute, I need to get an Advil."

11:15

Jordan stepped off the elevator. Visiting the crime scene didn't help

at all. Drew kept lecturing her on death, and to top it all off, she didn't

find any evidence whatsoever. What was Drew's problem anyway? It was if she

didn't know enough about death already.

"Did you find anything?" Nigel asked her.

She shook her head. "Not a damn thing, you?"

"Well Peter's half-brother came in here a few hours ago," He told her.

"Oh, so that's who that guy was..."

"Yeah, Bug put him in with Lily... poor bloke poured his heart out to

her..." Nigel said.

"Poor him? I'd sooner say poor Lily," She said, "I'd hate to have her

job..."

The Pogue

9:31 PM

"So how was day one without good old Woodrow?" Max asked her

innocently. He apparently hadn't heard about the hell she had just come from.

"Ugh... Hell," She said.

"Oh? How so?"

"Peter was murdered early this morning..."

"No way..." Max said in shock, "Any good evidence yet?"

"No. We've hit a dead end... No evidence... no suspects..."

Lily's Apartment

Lily was sitting on the couch. She was ending another hellish day with

another night alone. She turned on the TV and changed the channel to HBO. Maybe

she would catch a good movie before she fell asleep.

There was a sharp knock at the door, startling her. She quickly stood

and opened it. It was Peter's half brother, Jai Alexander.

"Mr. Alexander... What are you doing here?" She asked him confusedly.

She had no idea how he got her address.

"Please... Call me Jai, "He told her.

"Sorry, Jai, h-how'd you get my address?"

"I asked around... I needed someone to talk to... someone who would

listen..." He explained.

Lily held great sympathy for him. "Come on in."
