Affectation

~*~

A brief biography: born Tom Marvolo Riddle, named for my good-for-nothing Muggle father, orphaned by an unfortunate incident involving copious amounts of liquor and narcotics, brilliant student, brilliant mind, presently endeavoring to conquer the wizarding world.

Interesting, no?

Have you ever raised your wand to another wizard with the intent to kill?  I thought not.

I can see in your eyes what you are thinking: “Such a brilliant mind, Lord.  Why murder?”

Have you ever been whipped?  Have you ever been forcibly intoxicated?  Have you ever lost a competition against manacles?  I thought not.

In my youth, in that horrid Muggle orphanage, only one window brightened the room in which I lived.  Do you know what you could see from that window?  The park?  The ocean?  Castles, rolling green hills, fragrant flowers, children playing?

A smoky alley and another fortress of brick.

Do you understand why I had to see the world?  Ah, you’re nodding!  I thought so.

In my youth, in that horrid Muggle orphanage, there were cockroaches.  Have you ever killed a cockroach?  That was my job.  Imagine, the most powerful wizard in the world, forced to perform menial domestic tasks.  Isn’t that absurd?  Then, yes, very much so, but Lord Voldemort is much older and wiser now.

Have you ever held something’s life in your hands?  Those insects are terribly small, and they don’t live long, particularly if they’re being pursued with a rolled up newspaper.  There’s a certain satisfaction when you see them on their backs, oozing and legs frantically waving but knowing they won’t ever be turned right.

The same is true with humans, really.  There’s something to be said for having the superior knowledge of when another being’s life will end.  To know that the last thing they will see is blinding green light, to know that when they breathe in it will be their last, to know their last exhalation will be a tortured scream.  To know that what happens to them is entirely at your discretion.

To know these things is to know power.

Do you know power?

When it is your choice, you may make it.  Avada Kedavra, Crucio, Imperio?  On the ground, in the air, in the morning, at night?  Others present, or just you and him?  Do you want to see his eyes as he dies?  You may decide.

Haven’t you ever wanted that kind of control?  I thought so.

And haven’t you ever wanted to win, to conquer, to overcome?  I thought so.

And do you understand me, then?

I thought not.

Hypocrites.

Author’s Note: My first Voldemort piece.  It was quite an interesting little adventure.  If you take the time to read (THANK YOU!) please review, let me know what worked, what didn’t, what made sense, what you liked, etc.  I really do value and appreciate each and every review.

Disclaimer: Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter, and basically any other cool thing I have ever wanted belong to J.K. Rowling.  God bless her.
