The Smile on Your Face
Merry

'Frodo's leaving!' I remember the thought running through my head like it was yesterday. 'Twas years ago. But I forget myself.
We were at the Grey Havens, saying a final goodbye to Gandalf. I don't really know how we could. He had helped us so much, he had been our guide, our counsel, and most importantly, out friend. I could barely she the ships, I was crying so hard. Pip and Sam were too, distraught, that's what we were. Frodo wasn't though; he just cut himself off from the world. Now I know why.
"It is time Frodo." Those words were scary, and I dread the memory of them even now. 'How could Frodo leave? How could he do this to me, to Pip, and especially, to Sam?' He hugged us all, starting with Pip. I could see Pippin crying, but not Frodo. 'Was he truly heartless?' I wondered. He hugged me next. IT was so hard to let him go, this friend who we have learned to trust so much. Last, but not least, was Sam. I cannot describe what passed between the two, but needless to say Sam wept greatly, and I feel his sorrow, but only to a lesser extent. Gandalf followed Frodo onto the ship and I looked up, testing my heart, to see if is would let Frodo go. I saw him smile at us like he has not smiled since before the Ring. I understand now, I saw it in his smile. My last words to you Frodo are these: "For all the heartbreak, it was worth it for the smile on your face."
