Disclaimer: I don’t own anything in this story except for the plot. All characters, settings, and initial ideas belong and always WILL belong to J.K. Rowling.

This short fic is really a branching out for me. However, I DO like to keep an open mind to any pairings, and so this is dedicated to anyone who really really believes that Ron and Hermione deserve to be together forever. Hope you like it!

But even if you don’t like Ron/Hermione, maybe you’ll still like this…who knows? It’s NOT completely romantic or fluffy or anything, I promise. Just a little something I thought up during class today (actually, during a test. Apparently, thinking about entire storylines for fanfiction will not help your test grade at all unless, of course, you are being tested on fanfiction, which most of us are not. This I learned first-hand today.).

And I think it’s slightly humorous….some parts are in my mind, at least…oh, and if you have a dirty mind, well…let’s just say this fic may cause an interesting reaction on your part at first…heh…well anyways, I’ve babbled enough…now get on to reading! :)

The Big Night

“Ouch! Ron, that’s the third time you’ve hit my shoulder—please try to be more careful!”

“Sorry, Hermione, but maybe if we turned a few lights on in here, I’d be able to see where your shoulder is!”

“I’d have thought that being this close to me, you’d be able to distinguish my shoulder, Ron…”

“Shh! Do you want Harry to hear us? Or anyone, for that matter?”

“Er, you’re right, I suppose…it would be a bit awkward if Harry found us here like this. I don’t think anyone else would have that much of a problem with it, though…”

“Do you think he’ll be angry with us?”

“No, Ron, don’t be daft. He’s our best friend, for Merlin’s sake. I think he’ll have a good laugh about the whole thing.”

“But we have been lying to him a lot lately, to cover up things and stuff…you know…and it’s been, what, two months now, since this whole thing started?”

“Ron, please, stop. You’re beginning to scare me. We aren’t doing anything wrong. Lots of people do this too, you know. It’s not just us.”

“But Hermione, Harry’s my best mate, and if he came down right now, here, into the Common Room, and saw us here like this and got angry, he might never forgive me.”

“Ron, yes, Harry has indeed blown up a few times at us, but things are different now. He’ll understand our reasoning.”

“Fine, fine, but if he gets angry with us, I’ll be the first one to say I told you so.”

“All right, I’ll give you that. Now, please, can we continue where we left off?”

Five minutes later…

“Hermione, can we please take a break for at least ten minutes? I need to catch my breath and get a snack. And this pitch blackness is killing my eyes…”

“Ron, you are such a git. I thought this was important to you.”

“It is! No, Hermione, it really is…this is something I’ve wanted to do for a really long time, but it’s still a bit tiring on the muscles, you know…”

“What muscles?”

“Okay, fine. It’s tiring on my bony arms and legs. Are you happy now?”

“Quite.”

Ten minutes later…

“Hermione, seriously…”

“Ron, I can’t believe you. You promised me that tonight would be…that you wouldn’t…”

“Merlin, Hermione, I know, but I’m not invincible or anything! I can’t just go on and on like this for hours!”

“Well, er, all right. You can have a five minute break, I suppose. Maybe I have been coming at you a bit too much tonight…”

“Finally! I thought I’d never hear those words!”

“Ronald Weasley! I am insulted!”

“No, no, Hermione, you misunderstood me! It’s just that I…I want to save my strength…I want to be…er…well energized…for…for the big moment, later tonight…”

“Right, right. Go on. Have your break then. I’ll be waiting patiently.”

“Excellent.”

Ten minutes after that…

“Seriously, Hermione, I’m getting worried…he’s going to show up any moment and find us like this, I know it…”

“Okay, one minute…just one more minute…ah, yes, that’s better. Much better. Now, I suppose we should head to the closet for the next part of the night, shall we?”

“I thought you’d never ask.”

In the closet…

“Ouch, Ron! Be careful of my back, thank you very much…”

“And you! You watch out for my foot!”

“Oh, sorry…”

“Shh! Hermione! I hear something!”

“Well, then shut up and stay still!”

“I think it’s the others…”

“Do you think they know we’re in here?”

“Do you think it matters now?”

“Any minute now, Ron…any minute he’ll find us…I think we’ve been too loud down here…”

“Oh, so now who’s the paranoid one?”

“Oh, shut up, will you?”

“Hermione, shh! I hear him!”

“This is it, Ron.”

“The moment of truth.”

“Here we go…”

“One…”

“Two…”

“Three…”

“SURPRISE!”

“HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY HARRY!”

Harry stared around at all of the Gryffindors gathered in the Common Room, smiling and laughing and cheering and wearing strange party hats. Hermione and Ron made their way over to him through the crowd.

“Harry! Are you surprised? Do you like it? Are you mad?”

“Er—yes, and yes, and no,” Harry grinned. “Did you two plan all of this?”

Ron grinned back. “We’ve been planning for two months. Well, Hermione’s been doing most of it. She’s a bloody monster when she means business.”

Hermione frowned. “Thank you, Ron. Words every girl wants to hear.”

Ron smirked and rubbed his sore arms. “Pay back for my soreness. Harry, mate, she’s been having me hanging posters and streamers for the past hour and a half straight—in the dark, no less!”

“We were so afraid you’d come down and catch us setting it all up, and that the surprise would be ruined,” Hermione admitted to Harry.

He shrugged. “I wouldn’t have minded, it’s not like I get many parties…okay now, enough delaying, now where’s that butterbeer!”

Ron turned pale. “Er—well, see, mate—”

“Ron,” Hermione warned dangerously, eyeing him with malice, “don’t tell me you forgot the butterbeer!”

Ron shrugged sheepishly. “Sorry…I knew I was forgetting something as we went into that closet…”

Harry raised his eyebrows. “You two were in a closet? Together?”

Hermione and Ron blushed deeply and exchanged a quick glance.

“Er—” Ron said…

“Right,” agreed Hermione…

“Let’s get on with the party, shall we?” Ron suggested.

Hermione looked relieved as Harry continued to stare between them, and she nodded quickly. “Yes, Ron. That’s the best idea you’ve had all night.”

So there you go. Ha, that was fun to write. Not too much romance, no fluff, slight humor……good times.

Hope you all enjoyed that, and I wish you all luck with your own writings!
