Chapter 1
Ken slowly sat up in bed and peered around the room. Something had woke him up, but he wasn't sure what. A quick glance at his partner told him the worm was still asleep, so what could it have been? As if it had heard his mental thought, his digivice beeped, and the computer screen turned on, casting an eerie glow on the room.
' Strange...' he thought.' I don't remember leaving that on.'
As he climbed down from the top bunk of his bed, Wormmon asked sleepily," Ken, where are you going?"
" Go back to sleep, Wormmon," he told the half-asleep digimon." I'll just be a moment."
Once he was sure the worm had gone back to sleep, he walked over and picked up his digivice. It looked perfectly fine upon closer examination, and everything was working. He shrugged, figuring it was just a fluke, and headed back to bed.
' Ken...' a disembodied voice floated to his ears from somewhere behind him.
He whirled around to find himself facing the computer. Where had the voice come from? Had he just imagined it? Perhaps he was just tired, and should go back to bed to get more sleep. Then he saw it, on the computer screen was a portal to the digital world, or at least it looked like the digital world, just darker.
He debated whether or not he should go, but decided that waiting till tomorrow would be more logical because it was very late, everyone was asleep, and he didn't want to wake up Wormmon. It was plain common sense that you shouldn't go to the digital world without anyone knowing or without your partner, but try as he might, Ken couldn't seem ignore the pull from the other world.
He had this strange feeling. Possibly longing? It was as if an invisible thread was pulling his soul to the world. Why had he gotten this sudden need to go, and why couldn't it wait till tomorrow?
All common sense and logic had gone out the window. Ken approached the computer with his digivice in hand. He would just have a quick look around, it would only take several minutes, and he would be back before anyone noticed. There was no point in waking Wormmon up just for a quick visit to the digital world, he would be fine without him.
Holding up his black digivice to the computer screen, he felt the familiar sensation come over his body as he was sucked into the digital world. As he opened his eyes, he felt his heart jump into his throat. Right in front of him was what looked like the dark ocean, except for the fact that the water was very shallow, so he assumed that it was low tide.
He didn't understand how he could have gotten here. Maybe it was a trap. He looked around suspiciously, but didn't see anything threatening. He was relieved to see that the TV back to the human world was still there. Not wanting to be anywhere near the dark ocean, he turned to leave.
' Ken...' the voice called again. It sounded so sad, as if it had lost something, and had given up hope.
Perhaps the reason why he didn't go back home, and instead began walking off toward the direction the voice came, was because it sounded so familiar. It reminded him of the time he had been looking for Wormmon in the Primary Village.
It appeared that the voice was coming from the ocean, but since it was low tide, Ken could easily walk out onto the shore without warring about the water. As he got closer, the voice calling his name sounded more eager, impatient, yet happy. It seemed like it knew Ken was coming.
When Ken reached what he thought was might be the source of the voice, he didn't find a person or an animal of any sort. He instead found a strange looking necklace hanging of a large jagged rock that was covered in barnacles from the ocean.
The pendant on the necklace was shaped like a heart with a zigzag line going through the middle. Half of the heart was black with a tiny bat-shaped wing coming out of its side, and the other half was white with a small bird-like wing coming out of its side.
He raised an eyebrow at the item, wondering what it was doing out in the ocean. He wondered if the voice had come from the necklace, but then thought that a talking necklace was ridiculous, even in the digital world and dark ocean.
Ken picked up the object to examine it closer, and when he did, he felt a strange power radiating off of it. A feeling as if something was greedily and desperately reaching out to his soul. Holding this necklace gave him a feeling of being complete, like it was meant to be his.
Maybe being woken up so early caused him to be too sleepy to think straight. Maybe he was listening to his emotions, and not to his brain, but whatever the reason, Ken slipped the heart-shaped necklace over his head, having it dangle loosely around his neck.
The unknown power from before flared up and seemed to take hold of his soul and body. Ken could hear the familiar voice whispering soothingly into the back of his mind, but he couldn't make out what was being said.
Sleep suddenly came over his senses like a fog, and before he could even begin to comprehend what was happening, he blacked out...
