He could here the gently voice of his wife, reading a story in a way that made the books come alive, she would use a different voice for each character and it would rise and fall, depending on the emotion of the characters or the events in the story.
Every so often Faramir could here giggles of laughter or gasps of fright and shock from his two sons, his oldest Elboron would be sitting on one side of his mother, carefully holding the candle for her to see. While his youngest son Aramir would be sitting on the other side, turning the pages of the book for her.
Faramir knew this without having to pull back the bed hangings, it was a scene that would often take place in his bedroom,
It was also a scene that had often happened in his own childhood, his mother reading a story, while Boromir would hold the candle and he turned the pages of the book.
But then his father would come home, the curtains would be thrown open, letting the bright sun into the room, the boys would be told to take their toys back to their bedroom and stay there until dinner was called.
Faramir was not his farther and he never would be, he wasn't filled with anger at the scene but instead filled with love and happiness.
He quietly tip toed over to the bed careful not to tread on any stray soldiers with his bare feet.
As he got closer to the bed Eowyn's voice became more clearer as she told the boys one of their favourite stories, 'the trolls began to argue about how they were going to cook us, if they should fry us or maybe sit on us one by one and squash us into chill. And then suddenly',
'Arrrrrg' shouted Faramir opening the curtains of the drapes, Eowyn and the boys screamed in fright, While Faramir laughed at their reaction.
'Faramir you gave be such a fright' said Eowyn, smacking him lightly on the arm with the book.
'Yeah, father you scared me' said Elboron
'I'm sorry, but I could not recess' said Faramir moving to sit next to him.
'Didn't you read this book yesterday' asked Faramir while Elboron moved to sit on his father's lap, careful not to drop the candle.
'It's a funny story daddy, Merry also sends us the best books' replied Aramir, who had climbed onto his mothers lap, and was now trying to find the page that she had stopped reading at. 'Found it mummy'
'Ok where were we', 'the trolls were just about to cook them' said Elboron snuggling in to Faramir's chest.
'Oh yes, and they spent so long arguing, that what they didn't notice...'
As Eowyn continued to read, Faramir looked at his family, his sons who brought him so much love and laughter and his beautiful wife, who he loved with all his heart.
Faramir knew he was nothing like his farther, because it was days like this that made him realise what life was really about, not money, or power, not any of the things that his father had taught him.
But was really mattered was love and family. And as Faramir sat in his bed, litstening to his wife read, he knew there was no were else he would rather be.
