Sirius tried to balance his body, but failed and landed flat on his arse. He felt the hot sand entering his shoes and pants. He moved uneasily.
A few seconds later Remus Apparated next to him looking very controlled.
"Feeling tired Paddy?" He asked grinning mischievously.
"Nope, the view is so much better from down here" Sirius answered casually.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Remus' mischievous grin faded and a dreamy look covered his face. His glance drifted away and he got lost in his thoughts.
Sirius looked around him too. He gaped at the beauty of his surroundings. The view was breathtaking.
"It's marvellous" He said softly.
Sirius' words made Remus return to reality abruptly. He looked at his lover, who was still laying on the sand and smiled.
"Need some help there?"
"Now that you mention it, yes" Sirius smiled back and stretched out his arm. Remus grabbed it, but Sirius surprised him, pulled him hard and he found himself on top of the tall wizard.
"You're right. The view is much better from down here" He whispered.
"I knew you'd see things my way" Sirius said, his eyes sparkling.
It had been long time since they've felt so carefree and playful. The world wasn't a safe place any more. The war was growing stronger. Any day, any hour, any minute and they could die.
They both seeked safety and comfort in eachothers arms, but it was getting harder every day to find what they mostly needed. Trusting didn't come out as easy as it used to.
Sirius' pale blue gaze penetrated Remus. How could this man be the traitor? Why did it have to be him? He wished he had never seen Remus talking to those Death Eaters. He wished he was wrong. He hoped things could be like they used to. When he and Remus shared one soul. He wanted his Remus back. He needed his Remus back.
Remus felt Sirius' penetrating look and his hazel eyes darkened. They were leaning so close to each other he could feel Sirius' breath. They were so close he could feel the distance in their hearts grow more painful. He didn't know why things had changed between them. He didn't know why Sirius' touch wasn't the same any more. He only knew that it was coming to an end. They were coming to an end. And it hurt.
They instinctively leaned even closer. Remus caressed tenderly Sirius' hair. Sirius clenched Remus' shirt and held him tight. Their lips touched. They kissed softly. It wasn't lust, nor passion. It was a plea. A cry for help. They didn't want to let go. The bond they shared, their whole existence was hanging from a thin string. Their lips parted.
They stared each other for a few precious moments and then Remus rolled over and layed flat on his back.
They now knew. It had been a goodbye kiss.
Grains of the golden sand creeped through Remus' fingers. Sirius reached his hand and held it. They didn't look at each other this time. They kept silent and admired the setting sun becoming one with the waves.
They had run out of time.
******* A/N: There is a phrase in the story which is inspired by a certain poem. Can you tell?
OK, I can't handle challenges very well, but I truly hope you enjoyed this little story. Kisses, Zoe
