He lay on his deathbed; his existence would soon fade. He wasn't even that old, he would never get to see his children marry or watch them have children of their own. It was all going to end. It was because of the Ruby. When it was lost, he knew that his days were numbered. He never even bothered to seek treatment. His children sat by his side, as he lay quiet. He was lost in thought, thinking of how it all began.

It was years ago that he received the Ruby. He awoke one evening to find himself in a strange place, a room filled with control consoles and glittering walls. A globe sat at one end of the room, and a large tube occupied the wall at the other. He was shocked, but what happened next shocked him even more. A head appeared in the tube and spoke to him. It called itself Zordon, and warned him of impending demon war against Mariner Bay, the city where he lived. The man already knew of the demons, one of them had already taken his son from him, but he was unaware that war was impending. Zordon then gave him the Ruby, as well as access to a space shuttle, a set of Zords known as the Rescue Zords, and a carrier Zord known as Artillatron. Zordon told him the Ruby would be the key to unlocking Ranger powers to be used against the demons, and the shuttle and Zords would be keys to building Zords to be used in combat.

He then awoke in his bed, the Ruby in his hands. Heeding Zordon's warning, he sought out a brilliant scientist and convinced her of the urgency of the situation, getting her to help. Next he found a group of fellow U.S. Military officers, who, surprisingly, believed his story. They helped him acquire funding for research and base construction. Construction began on the Aquabase, as well as research on building powers and Zords. He himself began by testing the Ruby and finding that it was capable of granting Ranger powers. It also granted another incredible ability-the ability to turn invisible. Sadly, this power was not able to be integrated into the morphers being built. He was soon to discover that the Ruby had an unexpected side effect: his life had become dependent on it, and if he was out of contact for it for too long, he would die. Thus he was forced to continually stay morphed or risk death. Soon he was thrust into battle, upon hearing of the Turbo Rangers and their battle against Divatox's forces. It was determined that he should take the Rescue Zords as well as Artilliatron to the aid of the Turbo Rangers; it was viewed as a chance to determine their battle capabilities and use that to help make whatever changes were necessary to the new Zords. He nearly died during this period when he was kidnapped and the Ruby stolen. Luckily, he survived and retrieved the Ruby. Eventually, he left the Turbo Rangers behind, leaving the Zords with them. Not much later, however, he learned of Zordon's capture and set off for space in his shuttle to search for him. He did not find Zordon, but he did encounter the Space Rangers, which consisted of most of the former Turbo Rangers. He gave Andros the Delta Megazord to help them on their quest. He helped defend Eltare during the attack of the UAE, and then returned to Mariner Bay and Lightspeed Rescue.

While seeking a way to eliminate his dependence on the Ruby to maintain his life force, he discovered that when the Ruby had been stolen, it had toughened his body, reducing his dependence to the point where he only had to come into contact with it once every few weeks. He locked the Ruby away and focused on being a commander/mentor to the Rangers chosen to fight against the demons in the war. But when they lost their base, the Ruby was lost, too. Soon after the victory against the demons, his condition began to deteriorate, and it had continued to do so. Now he was close to his last breath. Captain William Mitchell closed his eyes and died.
