Author Notes: This takes place sometime after the Battle City tournament. This is my first Yu-Gi-Oh fanfic that I've ever written, but I've read a lot of them (none that were focused on Seto and Serenity's relationship... yeah so this is all me.) Everything else is pretty easy to comprehend, so I'll leave you to do that all by yourself! Oh, and the words in this fic sometimes stick together. I think ithas something to do with the QuickEdit feature, but I'm not sure.
Enjoy!
Chapter 1:
Bait
The boredom and lack of concern in the officer's voice enraged the straw blond haired boy that stood across the counter from him. Joey's eyes held a glint of everything uncertain in their depths. His fear was a coward and hid behind the veil of anger in his expression.
"What did you say your name was?" the officer inquired.
"My name is Joey Wheeler for the thirtieth time!" Joey's voice rang out through the police station, rage dripping into his tone like the light rain before a heavy storm.
"Right." The man made a mark in what looked like a notebook."Who'd ya say was missing again? How long has it been gone?" He peeked down at his paper again and added, "oh yeah, and where was it last seen?" He tapped his hand over his mouth as he drew in air for his long yawn.
"My sista', Serenity Wheeler has gone missin'! She, not it, has been gone for-" He paused, the distress on his face disappearing, being replaced with confusion. "Mai..." He turned his head away from the misty steam coming from the officer's coffee, and addressed the violet eyed woman standing next to him.
She surveyed him with concern and sympathy.
"How long has she been missing?"
"Joseph! I swear to god! Get out of my way, I'll handle this," Mai said in a frustrated manner, swinging her arms up to shove Joey out of her way. He's a nice guy, but he sure is dense sometimes.
Joey struggled against her shoves. "No, Mai!" he yelped while falling to the cold, speckled tile beneath him. He froze when she dealt him a hard glare.
"Be a good puppy, and SIT!" Mai yelled at him, like he was a small defenseless puppy at military school. Then out of nowhere a girl with black hair, wearing a green school girl outfit walked up to the good puppy.
"Don't worry, I have to deal with a guy just like this back in the feudal era, so I know how you feel," the young lady said, kneeling in front of Joey.
A look of awe overtook Mai's features.
"Oh my god! I can't believe it!" Mai screamed ecstatically, her eyes wide with happiness. "Joey! Jeoy!Do youhave any idea who this is?"
Joey's eyes narrowed at Mai's sudden outburst, and he shook his head, indicating that he had no clue who this school girl was.
"She's Higurashi Kagome! She's on Inuyasha! Kagome!" she shouted, and then turned to the girl."Can I please, please, pleeeeaaase, have your autograph?" Mai pleaded. Shemustnot of realizedall ofthe people that were gathering around them. . .either that or she didn't care. She was such an attention whore sometimes.
"Mai! Did ya forget why we're here? What about Serenity?" Joey jumped up from the floor. He stared at her for a long moment before realizing she wasn'tpaying him any attention at eye twitched in frustration. "Argh!"
"Well, you see. . . I don't give autographs. It's against my contract," Kagome said, making sure to choose her wording verycarefully.
The look of sorrow on Mai's face broke Kagome's heart..
"But, umm... here, look you can have this!" Kagome said, feeling a bit sorry for Mai. She pulled out a massive collar, decorated with fangs and beads, from her bag slung over her shoulder. "Kaeda gave me two, you can have my spare one." Kagome placed the beads on Joey's neck. "There!" She clapped her hands like she was removing dirt."Now he is your dog, just say the command and... well, because your a fan, you know what will happen." Kagome winked at Mai.
An evil smirk spread across Mai's face.
Kagome shuddered at the look of the smirk. Ok... maybe that wasn't the best idea...
"Wha-What the heck is this thing!" Joey demanded, trying to pull the necklace from his neck. "Why-It won't come off!" He continued in his struggle to remove it."Hey! Hey! Get it off! GET IT OFF!" Joey begged, frightened of being Mai's doggy.
"Thank you Kagome... I will put this to good use." Mai grinned an evil grin. "Oh and one more thing Kagome, next time you visit... " Mai paused, thinking over the question. "Could you bring SESSY with you?" Mai howled like an obsessed fan girl, her eyes popping out of their sockets.
Kagome gave her a meak smile and ran away.
"Sure thing!" She ran, and ran, and ran, and ran, and ran.. and...Visit again...! In your dreams lady!
"I just want to try this out," Mai said as she turned to Joey. "Only once, I promise! Then we can try to file the missing persons report for Serenity," she promised, a mischivious sparkle to her eye. "Ready?" she asked, and before Joey had time to react, she had started the count down."One, two, three... ! SIT BOY!" Mai yelled with glee.
Joey went slamming to the tile floor in a blur.
"...Ahh... Ma' I don't want to go to school today, just five more minutes..." Joey spoke dazed, then passed out.
"Oops! Heh...curiosity killed the cat," she said with an innocent smile. "Hehe... it works! I can't believe it works!"
The young woman in his grasp, kicked, jumped, and used any other means that she could think up to try to break free. She was blindfolded and her mouth duck taped, sweat beading down her forehead. Her hands were held behind her back by a thin rope and two tall, shadowing men, smirks on their faces and muscles bulging apparent through their wardrobe.
"Mr. Kaiba! Your guest has arrived," another ghoul shouted out, attempting to get his boss's attention.
The girl's bronze hair swung rapidly as she tugged hard at each side in a desperate try to get her arms loose. She heard the slow, haunting footsteps of the dangerous CEO approaching them.
"Gentleman..." he greeted in a low, rich voice. He rested his hand on the railing that was agleam under the ceiling lamp.
Serenity's breath hitched in her throat at the sound of his icy voice. She felt every inch of her body go frigid as his presence continued to proceed toward her.
"Now now, gentleman," he began once again. "Is that how you treat a lady?" He motioned to the guards holding Serenity in a vice grip.
The ghouls looked over at their boss, dumbfounded.
"B-But boss," one ghoul started, but was caught by Kaiba's cold glare.
"No arguments," he said.
"But-"
"Release her at once!" Seto bellowed, his stern voice resounding in the chamber.
"But, !" The man holding the girl protested with bravery. "This one's too feisty to just let loose!"
"If you value your salary, you will not disobey a direct order," Kaiba said with a threatening edge.
The guard recoiled noticebly and backed down.
"Now release her," he ordered."Even if she is the lap dog's sister, it is not my intent to hurt her."
"Yes, Master Kaiba." The ghoul obliged, not desiring to dwell in Kaiba's boundless aggression any further.
Seto treaded over to her, his long overcoat swaying unnaturally behind him.
With each one of his footsteps she could nearly sense him gradually getting nearer and nearer to her. She couldn't remember the last time she had been so terrifired.
He stopped in front of her, and seemed to be giving her a long look.
She could feel him hovering over her and her already rapid heartbeat spiked.
He reached up and untied the bandanna that his goons had used as a blindfold, and slowly let it fall away from her eyes.
Serenity lifted her eyelids, afraid of what she would see. Her eyebrows rose when she found his blue eyes staring directly back at her, piercing through her own. His brilliant eyes generated an essence of pure nobility in their stern demeanor. Still too entraced in his gaze, she barely noticed him open up his coat.
That was, until she saw the glint of a tiny blade shimmer as he flung it out of what looked like a coin purse.
Serenity gasped. Was that what she thought it was? She wasn't sure, but her body stiffined nontheless.
Kaiba moved behind her, the blade along with him
Fear trembled through her like an earthquake breaking a rock in two.
"I already told you, your not in any danger," he soothed. Despite his comforting words, she could feel an undercurrent of danger in him. "Relax, and get used to being here. Your not going home until your brother, and Yugi come to get you." Kaiba gently took hold of her right wrist. "I would suggest you stay still." He snuggled the cool blade under the thin rope, and he heard her take in a quick, sharp breath. He then swiftly cut through the rope and let it drop to the ground.
Serenity tried to screem through the duck tape on her mouth, and it proved to be in vain. She pulled her arms up parallel to her face, and rubbed her aching wrists. She eyed Kaiba cautiously, still unsure of his plan.
"Have something to say?" he questioned. Then he moved back to his stance in front of her, his eyes matching her own, she seemed to be glowing a bright radiance from the shinning light transcending down on her. "I said you were safe here, that you weren't going to get hurt... well, getting this tape off will be painful, but it won't be by my hands. What are you waiting for? Your arms are no longer bonded, remove the tape yourself if you so wish."
She blinked dumbly. She had almost forgotten that she could use her hands again. She reached up and ripped the thick, silver tape from her mouth, letting out a yelp in the process.
Kaiba mentally winced from the sound.
After recovering her composure, she stared up at him helplessly. Tears welded up in her eyes. She shook her head and in a mix of terror and courage she yelled,"What do you want with me!"
His expression changed dramatically from being cunning and cocky to surprise.
"I don't want to be here-"
Kaiba lunged at her and placed his hand over her mouth from behind her, and held it there like a suction cup. He wrapped his free arm around her waist and pulled her tightly to him to secure her to him.
"I should have warned you that I do not appreciate being yelled at," he said, a calm air still about him. "You were always the quiet one in their group too..."
She stuggled against him, but he only drew her closer.
"I'm not going to let you talk, unless you promise not to be so loud," he said, then continued playfully, "until then, we'll continue to tango..." He indicated tp how he was holding her.
She realized his tight grip around her. It was a touch like she had never experienced. If it wasn't for her compromising situation she would have almost liked to be held like that. She blushed slightly at the thought.
"Promise to talk like a lady?" he breathed, the words danced through her long hair on her neck. It sent a silent shiver up her spine.
She gave him a numb nod.
He lifted his hand off her mouth, but his arm hovered around her for a moment longer than nessasary.
"What is your purpose of capturing me?" she quired, her voice soft and sweet -the way he had always heard it.
Kaiba had no interest in letting this gentle tone fade his concentration. It was odd, but he had found it difficult to remove his arm from around her warmth back into the immense freeze of air. Never had a desire without meaning been so strong. Confusion waned itself into the eldest Kaiba, but he shook it off. It's nothing.
Serenity tensed again as he moved back in front of her.
"I am holding another tournament," he said. "I sent an invitation to Yugi Muto, but he declined. He says he has to focus on other things. More foolish talk of Pharaohs, and magic." He sighed. "Whatever his concern may be, no one refuses an invitation from Seto Kaiba," he explained, a slow smirk making it's way onto his face.
"What does that have to do with me and Joey?" she inquired, her voice again making Kaiba rethink her touch.
"But it has everything to do with you and that mutt," he said like a teacher informing an eager pupil. "Don't you see the connection?" he asked. "Yugi says he won't attend, but as I speak a more... serious invitation is being delivered to him." He smirked. "It will explain that if he doesn't participate in the tournament, then you will not be freed. And if I know Yugi, he won't let Joey come and try to save you all by himself-Not that he could anyway." An evil laugh escaped him. "When my duel with Yugi begins, you will be released. All I want is a re-match, nothing more... and certainly, nothing less."
"What are you going to do with me while I'm here?" Serenity interrogated, her sound wavering.
Her discomfort was obvious to Seto. Good. Let her fear me a little. It will keep her in line.
Thoughts of large castles and prisoners entered her mind. What if he locks me an infested dungeon or something!
"You are, and will remain my guest until the faithful pup and Yugi make it through my tornament," Kaiba spoke with dry words toward his rival and company. "You are to be safe, like I've said repeatedly... let all the worries of mistreatment fall from your imagination," he said, now wanting to gain some of her trust. A little trust will go a long way.
"Seto!" a small, slightly cracky voice sounded from a corner of the room.
Serenity was more focused on on Kaiba's words resounding in her head, attempting to push the evil thoughts from her mind. The way he looked at her... it told the truth, but his stare made her squirm. Despite this, she liked the comfort it provided her.
A child-like figure emerged in front of them from an unblocked doorway.
"What is it Mokuba?" Kaiba broke the link in their eye connection and turned his attention to his younger brother.
"They require your assistance in the Main Tech Chamber," he said. "They seem to be having difficulties with the location projectors."
Serenity finally released her eyes from her kidnapper, and they fell on the boy. He was quite short, his long black hair going in crazy directions around a cute face. She thought he spoke very intelligently for his young age.
"I see..." Seto let his gaze form around his recently acquired bait. Not fish bait, actually, it was more like a doggy treat. "Show the princess to her room, Mokuba," he said, putting an emphasis on princess. Then he addressed Serenity solely, "I have business to attend to, please excuse my absence from the grand tour."
