Chapter 1
A/N: Hisies! Thankies for even clicking on the link to this fanfic! If you haven't heard of me before, it's probably because I haven't written many fanfics... XD. Anyways, enjoy!
Summary: A mission, a prophecy, and erasing memories. Sydney disappeared for two years only to come back to find her life completely different from the life that she once knew. As she uncovers what happened during the two years, she separates the truths from the lies. In the midst of it all, she finds something that she never expected to find. A love that was worth fighting for.
Ship: Most likely to be S/Sa or S/OC, but might change.
"Sydney, we're sending you and Agent Vaughn to Buenos Aires to retrieve a Rambaldi artifact. We're not sure which one it is, but we have verified the intel that we have received from Echelon. Your flight leaves in one hour. There will be more details once you're in the air. That will be all." Dixon said before exiting the room.
I gathered my things and headed home to pack an overnight bag, in case the mission would be unexpectedly delayed. This was the fifth mission that the CIA was sending me on since I came back. The night that I woke up in Hong Kong had been the beginning of the end for me. Vaughn had gotten married, my father was in jail for contacting my mother while he was trying to find me, Will was put into Witness protection and I was 'dead' to the world for two years. The life that I once knew wasn't the one that I came back to.
As I snapped out of my daze only to find that it was time for me to leave. I had moved into a new apartment since the one that I shared with Francie/Allison Doren was burned down. The only good thing was that Weiss was my neighbor. Since Vaughn wasn't mine anymore, Weiss became my rock. Making sure that everything was taken care of, I headed to my car.
When I arrived at the airport, it wasn't a surprise to me to find that Vaughn was already there waiting for me. As soon as he saw me, he got up and headed towards security. After getting through, we made our way to one of the CIA's private jets. As Dixon had said, there were more details on the plane. It was a simple mission. Vaughn, as usual, would be working surveillance outside in a unmarked van. I would be attending a formal dinner party as Cheryl Cabris, the daughter of a wealthy businessman that was very generous when he felt it was needed. The party was a fundraiser for a charity that dealt with incurable diseases and finding a cure.
Thanks to Marshall and his geniusness, I had a pair of diamond earrings that acted as a microphone, a diamond necklace that acted as a camera in case I had to leave the artifact behind, a diamond bracelet that acted as a comm., and a diamond ring that would figure out the combination to any vault that I placed the stone to in seconds. The theme seemed to be diamonds.
As for the dress, it was a classy and elegant black dress that I had purchased for this mission. Surprisingly, it went perfect with the diamonds. After reviewing the mission another five times, I took out my laptop to check my email, hoping that my father had come up with a new lead to what happened to me during the two years. I negotiated his release when I had come back from the first mission that the CIA had sent me on. I was disappointed when I hadn't received any new mail messages.
"Syd, we need to talk." Vaughn said from the seat across from me, finally breaking the silence.
"There's nothing to talk about." I said, knowing that we had many things to talk about.
"I heard you met Lauren." He said, ignoring what I said.
"She seems like a nice person." I said politely, unsure of how to answer.
"She is a nice person. You'll like her once you get to know her." He said, smiling a small smile.
"I'm going to get some sleep." I said, tilting my head back onto the seat and closing my eyes.
"I'll wake you when we're almost there." I heard him say before I fell asleep.
--
I woke up when I felt someone gently shaking me.
"Syd, we're here." Vaughn said as I opened my eyes.
"Thanks." I mumbled, still a little tired. I gathered everything that I had taken with me and got off the plane to find Vaughn waiting for me in the rental. I placed my bag in the trunk and we drove to the hotel in silence. The dinner party was set for 8:00 PM and it was 7:00 PM, so I had an hour to get ready. When we arrived, I got my bag from the trunk and headed to the reception desk.
"Cheryl Cabris." I told the receptionist as she typed my name into her computer.
"Welcome to The Money Paw. Your room number is 47 on the fourth floor. We hope you enjoy your stay!" She said cheerfully, handing the keys to me.
"Brian Grayson." Vaughn said as I put the spare key in my purse.
"Welcome to The Monkey Paw. Your room number is 21 on the second floor. We hope you enjoy your stay!" She repeated, only changing the second sentence, handing Vaughn his keys. We made our way to the elevator.
"I'm going to go get ready. I'll meet you back here in forty-five minutes." I told Vaughn as he got off at the second floor.
"See ya in forty-five." he said as the elevator doors closed.
The door reopened at the fourth floor. When I opened the door to my hotel room, I was in complete awe. It was a five-star hotel room. I figured that they must've upgraded me since I was the 'daughter' of Miles Cabris. After walking through the whole room, I headed into the shower.
Emerging thirty minutes later, I was clean and refreshed. I slipped on my dress and added makeup and perfume. I headed downstairs, planning to get a quick drink. The room was elegant, but it was missing a mini bar. I ordered a water and received it a minute later as I sat down on a barstool. I placed my purse on the counter, which held a gun, my cell phone, and some money.
"Ready?" Vaughn asked as soon as I finished my water.
"Yeah." I said, getting off the stool and grabbing my purse. We headed outside to the van and was surprised to find Weiss as the driver.
"The CIA figured you could use the extra help." Was his only explanation as we got on the car. I found the diamonds waiting for me in a jewelry box. Just as I finished putting them on, we arrived.
"Good luck." Vaughn said as I got out of the van.
"Break a leg!" Weiss joked as he headed into the rear of the van to handle surveillance with Vaughn. I smiled at them before I headed up the stairs of the mansion in my six-inch stiletto heels.
The room was crowded and filled with chatter as I entered. The plan was to make some small talk before I excused myself to 'go to the bathroom' and headed upstairs into the private office of the owner of the mansion and took the artifact. I politely said hello to whomever I happened to run into and drank a flute of champagne before excusing myself. I went upstairs, picked the lock and headed inside.
"Boy Scout, this is Mountaineer. I'm in the office and I'm deciphering the combination to the safe." I said, placing the stone to the vault.
"Copy that, Mountaineer. You're clear." Vaughn replied as I waited for the safe light to change from red to green.
"Mountaineer, there is an unidentified person coming your way. Grab the artifact and get out of there." Vaughn said, sounding panicky as the light finally changed from red to green.
"This is Mountaineer. The vault is empty. The artifact's not there." I said, not knowing if the intel was fake or if someone had already gotten to it.
"There never was an artifact." A British accent said as I felt a gun being pressed to the back of my head. I slowly turned around to come face to face with the gun and the person that was holding it. I wasn't surprised when I saw it was Sark, smirking as usual.
"Remove all of your jewelry, put it in the vault and then close shut the vault." He said, his expression stony. I removed all of my jewelry, knowing that I had no chance unless I could get to my gun, but as if he could read my mind, he took my purse with his free hand and took out the gun and cell phone. He handed the purse back to me after double-checking that there wasn't anything else in there that would help me in any way.
"Come along, we're going to go for a ride." He said, motioning me to exit the room. He placed a necklace around my neck.
"If you plan to escape or make contact with your boy scout, all I have to do is press this little button," He said, showing me a small button that he was holding in his hand, "and it'll inject a poison into your bloodstream that will kill you in a matter of seconds. Same thing goes if you try to remove it without my knowledge or if you fail to cooperate with me." He told me before we entered the crowded room. He placed his hand on the small of my back to guide me out through a different way than I came in.
The CIA had many ways for me to get in contact for a situation like this, but every time I tried, something stopped me.
'This is the chance that you've been waiting for. No more Vaughn and Lauren, no more cloning, and no more CIA' a little voice in the back of my head coaxed me every time that I tried. Eventually, I gave up, because in the back of my mind, I wanted to see how this situation would play out.
