"Never fear, fair maiden," four year old Zoe Summers bellowed at full volume. "I shall save you. This dragon stands no chance
against Zoe Summer, Vamp Knight!"
Zoe, caught up in her own imagination, faced off against the imaginary dragon.
Her twin sister, Emma, said nothing for the longest time, staring off into space, caught up in her own thoughts. She was a solemn
little girl, as different from Hurrican Zoe as any person could possibly have been. Emma was the old soul; Zoe was the handful.
Zoe spun around in a circle and scrunched her face up in an imitation of their Daddy's vamp face. Whether she was a knight or a
princess in play pretend, Zoe Summers was always a vamp. Vamp knight, vamp princess... in the preschool play, when she'd had to be
the tomato, she'd been a vamp tomato. "Meet your doom, Dragon Breath," Zoe said, baring her imaginary fangs and her imaginary
Zoe liked to play with real swords, but Mommy and Daddy didn't like that very much. Then again, Zoe thought, what Mommy and Daddy
didn't know, wouldn't hurt them.
"Zo," Emma said softly. Her twin looked at her, and Emma, her voice dreamy, continued on. "What if the dragon isn't a bad dragon?" she
asked, tender hearted as always. "What if he's just lonely?" Emma paused thoughtfully, ever the four year old philosopher. "He didn't
ask to be a dragon. What if he's a sad dragon?"
Zoe pondered it. "I want a dragon," she said finally. "Maybe if the dragon was real and he was our dragon, he wouldn't be lonely
anymore and he could be a happy dragon and breathe fire and kill demons with us." Zoe very much so liked the idea. If she had a
dragon, then she could slay demons. Like Mommy. Like Emma.
Watching from the doorway, Buffy turned to Spike, alarmed. "There's no way they could actually get themselves a dragon, is there?" she
asked. When they worked together, the twins were a force to be reckoned with, and Mommy Buffy so wasn't in the mood to deal with a
dragon, especially since Emma would inevitably become attached to it the moment she met it. Though her slayer senses were strong, four
year old Emma was often known to burst into tears after slaying a vamp. Then again, she'd also been heart broken when Buffy had sold
her old car and bought a new one, convinced that the old car would be lonely without the family. Such was Em.
"No, luv, I think we're safe on the dragon front," Spike said. "Did you see the nibblet's vamp face?" Spike couldn't keep the
distinctly Daddy tone out of his voice. "Looks a bit like me, the bit does."
Buffy rolled her eyes. Spike was such a Daddy. Standing there, watching their daughters, she took his hand and brought it to her
"You better be right on the dragon thingy," Buffy murmured. "I'm so not in the mood for any kind of thingy today."
With that, they fell silent, watching their daughters, caught up in their imaginary world of dragons and daydreams.
Short, I know, but I just needed a quick break from the hideousness that is packing and realized that several had requested more of Emma and Zoe. Let me know what you think. Your opinions are valued.
