Destiny's Binding
By Zanisha

Summary
The legend of the Keybearer sounded like a load of junk to both Sora and Kairi. But when they learn about two main characters, lovers, who coincidentally have their names, both begin to wonder.... but that doesn't change anything between them, right?

Spoilers
Well, seeing as they ARE learning about the whole legend, this will obviously contain spoilers of the game... and I don't want to ruin any surprises... (Waits a moment) SORA DIES AT THE END! Lol, no, don't worry; he doesn't... unless you lose in battle that is!

Disclaimer
I don't own the characters, Square-Enix/Squaresoft and Disney Interactive do. Now, if I DID own them, I would be writing the script for the sequel, not pathetic fanfiction which will be of no use in a year or so. Got that? Good, let's move on...

Author's Note
Well, here I am again, tossing priority to the wind and starting yet another fanfic! Well, I suppose it can't hurt, just this once... this is the last one, I promise! Oh yes, I must add this. Seeing as the worlds are Disney, we will pretend that Disney movies/shows do not exist on earth. Disney is all part of the myth of the Keybearer. To prevent conflict, I also will say here: KAIRI'S EYES ARE BLUE! I've discussed this with many people to make sure, and I even paused the game on a big-screen TV to make certain... HER EYES ARE BLUE, NOT VIOLET OR BROWN OR BLACK OR (etc.)! Anyways...

Chapter One
Just a Legend

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Masako Takashi, history teacher, looked up to face her class.

Today, all of them were present; all twenty nine seated at their assigned places. But not seated in an attentive way - oh no, far from that. Whether it was doodling in the restricted margins of their notebooks, or talking to the person next to them, not one was actually paying attention.

Unfortunately, those types of students, the attentive kind, don't exist anymore. If they ever did, that is. So she waited, forefinger tapping a steady beat on the weathered wood of her desk. Soon it came; the one frantic 'shhhhhh' starting a chorus of shushes throughout the room. Eventually, this led to silence as the students opened their shabby textbooks to page 187.

And that was the way Ms. Takashi's classroom operated. After all, you couldn't expect children to be angels, could you? And besides, that was what a blackboard was for.

Normally, Ms. Takashi would walk slowly down each aisle. Oftentimes she would peer over the shoulder of a student to make sure they were actually reading, and not doing otherwise. But today, she too read page 187 of the textbook, though she was more interested than the larger portion of her pupils. It wasn't the usual history unit that you would find a woman like her teaching... but nonetheless, there she was, teaching it. A history lesson that had no basis in fact.

As soon as she had read the page, Ms. Takashi's lips curled in a subtle smile. Her eyes shone in an amused way as she looked first at a redheaded girl on the left side of her classroom, then at the right side of the room where a brown haired boy sat. She was sure the two of them would find this unit interesting - particularly the last sentence of page 187.

Perched cross-legged at the edge of her chair, Kairi Inao was bent over the piece of paper on which she was doodling. Yes, history class had already started, but it was just so tempting to pick up that pencil, pull out a loose sheet of paper, and draw.

No matter how neat and tidy of a person she was, doodling was one thing she couldn't control. Just looking at her would give off the impression that she was a neat person. Her white button-down shirt was creaseless and tucked into her uniform skirt all the way around the waist. The plaid skirt itself was devoid of stains, the knee socks under were store-fresh white and had no sags. Her cotton school vest, worn above the button-down, was not marked by chalk, nor stained in any other way. Kairi's fiery red hair, about the length of her shoulders, had been pulled back neatly with a blue sweat band, bearing the school logo.

From the tip of her pencil, the figure of a girl began to form. Slowly, as Kairi sketched in an outfit, the girl began to develop a personality. She had no name yet, but as each line of lead pencil was added, Kairi learned something new about her creation, until the final product when the girl felt like a friend.

With a start, Kairi wondered how much time had passed. Her head snapped up as she read the assignment on the board.

"Shhhhhhhh,"

As soon as the sound escaped her, people began to turn to the board, followed by shushes of their own. And that was the way it usually went with any class Ms. Takashi taught. Only one person shot a glare at Kairi for causing the silence, and that was Sora.

Sora Tomori, the most popular boy in the class. Cliché as that sounded, it was true. To Kairi, popularity wasn't an issue - after all, everyone in the school who was deemed 'popular', had been failing in at least one subject. Herself, she was certain that in her life she had never achieved anything lower than a B-minus... and that, only in Physical Education. Who would want to be popular anyway, when half the class talked about you behind your back? She had Akari Tomika and Maeko Nakimi, her two best friends, which she wouldn't give up for the world, much less for a status.

Sadly, she and her 'group' were probably the only ones who thought along those lines. Kairi was likely the only girl in that room at the moment, seeing as none of her friends were in the same history class as she, who could say that they were not in love with Sora Takano. That is, without failing a polygraph test. There was no reason - there were many. There was his body, - again, something Kairi couldn't give a crap about - his eyes, an electrifying shade of blue, - the exact same shade as Kairi's, for that matter, - and there was simply the fact that to go out with him, you would have to be considered popular.

Now in Kairi's opinion, to go out with him, popular or not, would just make you an idiot.

Hiding a smirk, she cast her gaze down to the textbook lying on her desk. Flipping it open to page one-eighty-seven, she began to read.

Unit Five
The Legend of the Keybearer

The unit we'll be covering next focuses on a story that many find to be a controversial topic. Did these events occur, or not? No one knows for sure, but there are many scientists who believe, due to several scientific finds that tie in with the legend, that yes, these events did occur.

The Keybearer was said to be a teenage boy named Sora. Sora lived on a 'world' called Destiny Island, where Kairi and Riku, key characters in this story, also lived. The concept of worlds is a strange one - that each 'world' is divided from the other by space, in a way like planets, though different. For one, each world could be a single physical landform - an island, or a mountain for example on its own in the middle of space would be considered one world. Others have numerous places within them. Some are a single building.

Also said, is that all the worlds were governed by the royals of Disney Castle. "Disney", a word that no one knows the roots of, is a term used to describe the non-human inhabitants of the 'worlds'. These 'Disneys' as they are referred to, are most commonly in the forms of animals, though occasionally in the forms of inanimate objects. No matter what the form, Disneys speak English, and often have some sort of magic or uncanny ability. See figures A, B, and C

Figure A: Cheshire Cat
Believed to live in the 'world' known
as wonderland, this crazy cat is said
to be able to appear and disappear
at will. It is also known to NEVER
give a straight answer.

Figure B: Genie
Resident of the 'world' Agrabah,
the genie is an all powerful being
that can grant the holder of its lamp
three wishes.

Figure C: Tinkerbell
A fairy out of the 'world' Neverland.
Her spells revive and grant second
lives to those who summon her.

Like any legend, the legend of the Keybearer has good and evil, in this case, the light and the dark. The darkness fought through a number of deadly evil creatures, the Heartless. The light fought back through a single weapon; the keyblade, which in the hands of a Keybearer with a strong heart, could defeat the darkness. in this case, the Keybearer would be the antagonist, Sora.

'Hearts' are another concept in the legend that must be explained. According to the legend, the heart is not your physical organ, but more like your spirit. Every person, even every world, has a heart. The heartless are essentially beings devoid of heart, who seek the hearts of others to fulfill their dark desire for sustenance. Both the heartless and the keyblade will be explained more thoroughly in later sections.

Despite the doubts as to its verity, the legend of the Keybearer is a popular legend, particularly to island folk, and many enjoy the vivid tales of the battle between light and dark, the boy Riku who stepped to the dark side, and Sora and Kairi, two legendary lovers separated from eachother by the distance of many worlds.

About three minutes later, she had finished reading. Leaning back in her chair, she closed her eyes and the last sentence of the introduction replayed itself over and over in her mind. Lovers?

It was just a coincidence though, right? But that big a coincidence, a whole unit on two people with the same names as her and Sora...? It didn't mean anything, nothing at all! Slowly, the members of the class finished reading the assigned page. People glanced at her and Sora, giggling.

Lovers? That was... disgusting! Apparently, the rest of the class found it funny, from the snickers that filled the room.

"I trust that you're all done," said Ms. Takashi as she peered at the class through the lenses of her glasses. They weren't large glasses, but rather glasses with rectangular lenses, the more stylish sort. After all, she was one of their younger teachers - though with her black hair tied back from her face, and her violet eyes shooting daggers at the whispering class, she was enough to make any student squirm in their seat.

"Good," she stated, standing up and offering a smile. Kairi was sure she heard a collective sigh from most of the students, maybe one of the sighs was hers. "Now, despite the similarities name-wise to certain individuals of the class--" Kairi noticed that she made no eye contact with Sora or herself as she said this "--I assure you that this is merely a coincidence.

"You may be wondering why we're focusing on a myth for a history unit," she added, a statement which was met with several nods and an equal amount of shrugs. "Well, analyzing a historical myth is essentially part of the curriculum, so for the following month, your daily history class will be mainly about the legend. Any questions?"

Sanako Akito, a petite girl sitting behind Kairi raised a quivering hand. "Will we be quizzed on this?" she asked timidly.

The teacher raised an eyebrow. "Why would it be any way else? After all, we are still in history class!" Most of the class groaned at the announcement. "There will be quizzes throughout the unit, although each counts only for a fragment of your mark. There will also be a large test at the end - with two parts. The first half is rather straightforward, simply a test on the facts of the story. The second part analyzes the morals and meaning of the story, where the answers aren't right or wrong, but are judged on how well they reflect your interpretations.

"What about projects?" asked Kosho Arita, a studious boy who was seated at the center of the front row.

"There will be projects and write-ups too," informed Ms. Takashi with a slight frown. Were there any real questions, she wondered.

"Yes, Inoa?" she said to the girl who had just raised her hand, addressing her by her last name.

"Uh, what really happens to Kairi and ... Sora in the ... legend?" asked Kairi, a red flush creeping across her face as the snickers grew louder.

"Whatever's so funny, keep it to yourselves," thundered Ms. Takashi before turning to Kairi. "I'm sure we'll learn that in due time,' she said kindly to the flustered girl. Kairi nodded meekly.

Masako, though a teacher, couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for her student. So she didn't give a proper answer to the question. Just then, the bell rang, and the hallway was filled with the yelling of students eager to get home and end the day.

"One moment," called Ms. Takashi. Looking at the textbook, she skipped page 187 and turned it to the next page. "Your assignment is to complete the 5 prediction questions on page 188," she said, writing the homework on the board for those who began to scribble in their planner books. "I'll expect it tomorrow with no exceptions. Good night, class."

In the hallway, Kairi walked as fast as she could through the pressing throng of students, hugging her textbooks and binders against her. Her only thought was to get to her locker before anyone came and...

"Hey, Inao!" called an all-too familiar voice. Kairi froze, the very last person she wanted to see at the moment.

"Tomori," she responded gruffly, addressing Sora by his last name as she turned to face him.

He gave her the famous goofy grin that made most girls go crazy. Kairi couldn't help but think he looked like a pig... yes, he looked exactly like a pig! She struggled to contain her laughter.

"Who are we to go against destiny?" he said, which Kairi supposed was his idea of a pickup line. "Movie tonight?"

That was it, she couldn't hold it in any more. She burst out in laughter, nearly crying tears of mirth as Sora's piggish grin became a confused one - she couldn't decide which was funnier. By now she was bent over in laughter. She was vaguely aware of Akari calling her name, but she couldn't stop.

"A-are you okay?" asked Sora, leaning closer.

"Y-you l-look like a-a constipated pig when you smile!" she choked. The hallway rang with laughter, Kairi could hear Akari's high pitched shrieks of mirth from behind her.

Sora looked furious. "How dare you--"

"Constipated pig!" she choked before doubling over in laughter, as was the rest of the hallway by now. "Sora got turned down!" yelled a girl from somewhere nearby. Immediately, the crowd grew as people bunched around.

"No one says no to me." Sora said, his voice dangerously low.

Kairi straightened up and relinquished her hold on her books. "Oh, but I think I just did!" she said, using the ever-so-cliché comeback with a sweet smile. "Well, have good day then," she said, walking off to her locker.

Kojuro Mori, Sora's best friend tapped him on the shoulder. "Should I get the little wench?" he asked, smashing one fist into the other. Sora would have said yes, after all he had never been turned down before. But he didn't.

"Just let her go," he said, stalking off to his locker. "Who gives a damn about a geek like her anyway?"

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Well, how did you like it? Holy constipated cow, that was LONG! Owww, my eyes... Well, lots of OCs in there. I couldn't throw in the normal characters (Riku, Selphie, etc.) because that would be TOO coincidental. Sadly, Riku doesn't exist here. Now, if you actually bothered to read all that junk, why not review? Huh? I'll try to update soon! Oh yes, and the names I got from a baby naming site. Perfectly random. Like I said, it was torture writing that whole textbook blurb, so boring! The figure A, B, C idea is out of my science textbook, imagine little pictures next to them.
