Sometimes Craig watches Spinner and Marco, and wonders. He wonders if
what people say is true, if they really are more than friends. He wonders
if Marco looks at him like that too, or hugs Jimmy as much as he does
Spinner. He wonders why Spinner always seems to end up in the seat next to
Marco, and he wonders why Paige and Spinner always fight whenever Marco and
Dylan fight.
He wonders if Marco has ever jokingly blown him a kiss, like he did
to Spinner on Monday. He wonders if the time when Marco fell asleep with
his head on Spinner’s shoulder was a coincidence. He wonders why Spinner
always pulls Marco’s feet into his lap when they’re all sitting around. He
wonders if Paige ever looks at them and wonders.
There are times when Craig wonders if they notice there are other
people in the room. He wonders if they both noticed that time when they sat
together on the bleachers and whispered through the entire dance. He
wonders about the time when they went to the amusement park, and Spinner
got scared on the roller coaster and held Marco’s hand.
He wonders about the way Spinner stares at Marco’s mouth when Marco
chews his lip. He wonders if Spinner wishes he could do that to Marco’s
lip. He wonders about the way Marco sometimes has his hand on Spinner’s
knee when they’re sitting. He wonders about the way they always seem to
hook their legs together when they sit next to each other on Spinner’s days
off at The Dot. He wonders why there’s sometimes a chair between them at
lunch, and their hands are always on the chair, almost touching.
Craig wonders why Spinner and Marco are the only ones in their group
who know each other’s phone numbers and email addresses. He wonders why
when he goes to Marco’s house to get the spare amp, Spinner is almost
always there. He wonders why they look at each other when Craig plays his
songs on his guitar. He wonders why, in the pictures he takes of all his
friends, they always stand near each other, and why Spinner once asked for
a picture of the two of them.
He wonders about the time when he borrowed Spinner’s cell to call Ash, and
found Marco’s number first on the speed dial. He wonders why every
Christmas at Ash’s house, Marco and Spinner offer to go to the kitchen to
get food, and take the long way back around, even though everyone there
knows there’s mistletoe in the doorway to the kitchen around the long way.
He wonders about the time when Marco bought Spinner a hundred dollar watch
for his sixteenth birthday, and he wonders if he was imagining the way
Spinner whispered something about reciprocating, and he wonders if Marco
really blushed. He wonders why Marco liked the silver ring that Spinner
gave him for his birthday most of all. He wonders why Marco still wears the
ring on a chain around his neck.
He wonders about that Valentine’s Day when there was a yellow rose taped to
Marco’s locker, and Dylan had no idea where it came from (he also wonders
why Spinner was the only one who knew that Marco’s favourite color is
yellow). He wonders why there was a white one on Spinner’s locker, and why
Paige didn’t speak to him for a month.
Sometimes Craig wonders if after all the wondering, he should have stopped
wondering. Sometimes he wonders if he already knows.
