The Smallest Smile

I sat alone
In my dark corner.
My head lost in a book
Of lost love and woe.

I never expected
What would happen next,
But I wouldn't have changed it
For the world.

I sat in my dark corner.
And something
Unexpected happened.
Someone smiled at me.

I could not understand it
I never showed compassion
And I never expected
Kindness in return.

Why would someone
Smile at me?
It perplexed my so,
That I had to ask why.

I walked over to the someone
Who had smiled at me,
And I asked him the question that tugged at me,
"Why did you smile?"

He replied simply with a smile,
"Because I thought you needed it."
I was touched by this statement
So simple and yet, so meaningful.

He could never have known
The thoughts that filled my head,
Thoughts of suicide, and revenge
That seemed so pointless now.

It amazed me how
The smallest of smiles
Touched me so,

And a new thought formed in my head.
If everyone could only smile
The smallest of smiles
Then perhaps everyone
Would be as happy as he.
