Chapter1:
July 2003- New York City
“This isn’t working, is it Trevor?” Kyra Green asked her boyfriend and best friend.
She was hurting right now. All she could do was remember the first time they met. She was 18 and he was 20. They were at a club called Big Town and she couldn’t believe her luck when the lead singer of the world famous group Salvation came to ask her to dance. That dance had led to a close friendship between her and the other guys of the group and of course to Trevor being her best friend. After that they even grew closer and started to date each other, eventually falling in love.
Now two years later, Kyra herself had been discovered and was now traveling the world having concerts here and there and was known by practically everyone.
Each of their careers was taking a toll on their relationship. They hardly ever saw each other and this was wreaking some havoc.
“I don’t know, Kyra. I still love you, but we hardly ever see each other and when we do, all we do is argue,” Trevor replied.
Kyra started at him intently taking in his 6foot form, blond hair and bright blue eyes.
It was true, they could never agree on anything anymore and it was frustrating them both.
“Well maybe we should take a little break from the relationship. Just be friends for a little while and then see how it goes,” she suggested.
“Are you sure that’s what you want?” Trevor asked.
“No, I’m not sure but what else can we do,” she replied.
“Maybe you’re right,” Trevor said, giving in.
“Look, I’m leaving tomorrow for South America. I have a concert to do down in Brazil and then I’m going to take a little vacation. Maybe when I get back we can talk and see how we both feel,” Kyra told him.
She stood up and gave Trevor a quick kiss on the cheek.
“So I’ll see you in about a month,” Kyra said with a small smile and then she turned towards the door. Before she could open the door he grabbed her arm and turned her to face him.
He looked at her intensely taking in her wavy black hair, tanned skin and her dark brown eyes, as if he was memorizing her face just in case he’d never see her again.
“I will miss you,” he said solemnly.
“I’ll miss you too. Don’t worry I’ll be back before you know it,” she told him; his words were scaring her.
“See you soon, Kyra,” he replied. And then she left his apartment and joined the bodyguard that was waiting for her outside.
July 1923 The Plateau
It had been 3 months since the plateau had been saved.
On that fateful day when the plateau had seemed to have collapsed in on itself, and all seemed to be lost, two people arose from the darkness and struggled to put things back to the way they were.
Veronica and Abigail had been the ones to step out of the darkness and were surrounded by a bright light. They were both holding on to the pendant. They raised the pendant above their heads and the light had begun to grow brighter. The light seemed to be coming from the pendant itself. All of the sudden a blinding white light flashed and for just a second everything was consumed by the light, even Veronica and her mother.
When the light finally dimmed Abigail and Veronica were standing as they were before.
Veronica slowly opened her eyes and found that she was standing back in the tree house. She looked around slowly and spotted Finn laying down on the floor nearby. Veronica quickly ran to her and checked for a pulse. She found a strong pulse at Finn’s neck.
“Thank God,” Veronica said, aloud.
“Veronica,” Abigail said from behind Veronica.
Veronica stood up and turned to face her mother.
“Mother, after all these years...” she trailed off and then tried to start again, “I’ve been waiting so long for this.” Veronica began to cry for joy. Her mother held out her arms and Veronica ran into them.
They stood like that for a couple of minutes. And then Abigail spoke up, “All is well now, child. Your friends are all fine and are back in this reality and safe. They will be here shortly.”
“Then you can meet them,” Veronica said, excitedly.
“I can’t stay Veronica,” Abigail said quietly.
“What do you mean you can’t stay?” Veronica asked, disbelievingly.
“I have to go back to Avalon,” he mother answered.
“Then take me with you,” Veronica cried.
“Child, it is not time yet,” Abigail replied vaguely.
“Then when,” Veronica cried out, thoroughly frustrated.
“Very soon. I will be back soon, for you and your friend,” Abigail said while gesturing at Finn.
Veronica turned to look at Finn and said, “Finn, why Finn?”
“You’ll know in time. Everything will reveal itself shortly. It’s just not time yet,” Abigail said, “Now I must go. I will miss you very much, my child.”
“Wait! Can’t you even tell me why all this happened?” Veronica asked, gesturing to the area around her.
“You’ll know soon. Just know that I love you and I will be back,” Abigail said cryptically.
She gave Veronica a kiss on the forehead and then disappeared.
“Mother,” Veronica cried out.
She stood there crying for a few minutes.
“Veronica,” someone whispered nearby.
She turned around and noticed that Finn was calling to her and trying to get up off the floor. Veronica quickly ran over to her and knelt down next to her.
“Finn, are you all right?” she asked concernedly as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
“Yeah I’m ok. I just have a headache the size of this tree house. What exactly happened?”
“I have no idea,” Veronica replied, “Come on lets go try to find the others.”
They left the tree house and had soon found Challenger very close by, unconscious on the ground. When he came to, he had a headache equal in size to Finn’s. Then they searched for the others. Roxton soon stumbled upon them and then they searched for Marguerite. She soon came walking out of a cave entrance and found them. Roxton ran up to her and took her in his arms giving her a huge kiss.
After about a week had passed, Malone had made his way back to them. He had told them that he had been on his way back to them when he saw shimmery things in the air around him and he couldn’t move anywhere without stepping into one. Soon they had engulfed him and he found himself being chased by the witches they had met earlier that year.
Now, 3 months later the explorers were all reunited again. Everyone had tried there hardest to forget that day. They tried to get back to normal, or as normal as it could get on the plateau.
Malone, Veronica and Finn were out taking their turn hunting. Malone and Finn had become close friends since they had met and the 3 of them hung out together a lot.
Right now they were stalking a wild pig. Malone, Veronica and Finn had it surrounded. The pig was grazing on the grass on the ground.
Veronica gave Malone the signal to shoot. So he lifted his gun and took aim and shot. Unfortunately the pig moved quickly out of the way and it stopped at another patch of grass close by and munched away as if nothing had happened.
Veronica gave Finn the signal to shoot this time. So Finn did as Malone and shot her crossbow at it, but again the pig got away.
Veronica was fed up with the pig so she took her knife and threw it at the pig.
The pig, not surprisingly, got away and this time it ran away as fast as it could and out of sight.
Veronica, Malone and Finn came out of there hiding places and stood in the middle of the clearing staring at each in bewilderment.
Then they burst out laughing.
“How could a stupid little pig get the best of us?” Finn asked between laughs.
“It must have been a very smart pig,” Malone said also laughing.
“Smarter than us. I’m insulted,” Veronica added, between giggles.
They all were standing there still laughing, when Finn saw something at the corner of her eye. She stopped laughing and turned to see what it was.
She gasped, “Umm...guys...” Finn said warily.
“What is It Finn?” Malone asked her, his laughter died away.
She pointed to what it was she was looking at.
“Oh my God,” Veronica gasped, as she turned to see what it was.
“Not again,” Malone said, just as surprised.
Back at the tree house
“And you’re sure that it was identical to the ones we encountered before?” Challenger asked, while moving about his lab.
“Yes, it was the exact same,” Veronica replied frustrated.
Malone, Finn, and Veronica had ran all the way back to the tree house as soon as they saw the same shifting planes of reality that they had seen 3 months before.
“Interesting,” Challenger said while looking through one of his journals.
“What can this mean, Challenger?” Marguerite asked, trying to hide the worry in her voice.
“Yes, does this mean we’re going to start going through the bloody things and start being chased by our ancestor’s enemies?” Roxton put in.
“Or ancient druids who think you’re a priestess who wants to destroy the world,” Marguerite added.
“Don’t forget slave catchers. I got chased by slave catchers remember,” Finn stated helpfully.
“Not to mention men-crazy witches. Can you imagine what could happen to us this time,” Malone pondered.
“I don’t even want to think about,” Veronica answered.
“Now listen, all of you,” Challenger practically yelled, “This might not be anything. It could be a residual portal or just a figment of your imagination.”
“Of all 3 of our imaginations,” Malone said, forcefully.
“Perhaps not,” Challenger corrected himself, “Whatever it is, it will need further looking into. I suggest we all go out tomorrow and see if we encounter anymore of these things. Agreed?”
“Agreed,” they called out in unison.
“Now how about we get started on dinner?” Roxton suggested.
Thanks!
