Smile For You

“Tomoyo-chan,” Sakura whispered, looking at me, her eyes full of concern. She took my hand in hers, squeezing it tightly. “May I ask you something?” She gave me a cute smile, but I knew it was fake.
“Yes,” I said quietly.
Sakura looked into the distance, as if she was searching for something – or someone. “Why don’t you smile anymore?” She didn’t return her gaze to me as she spoke, convincing me she was hiding something.
I closed my eyes, not able to watch her anymore. “You...because you have Syaoran.”
I couldn’t see her, but I could tell she had shifted to look at me. “What...what do you mean, Tomoyo?”
“Sakura...” I didn’t want to finish. I couldn’t finish. Sakura, I love you.
Sakura was frowning now. I still couldn’t see her, but I could sense it. Had we grown so close I knew her this well? “Remember when we were younger?” she asked.
I opened one eye, finding her standing now, looking down on me. “Yes,” I answered weakly.
“We promised that no matter what we’d always be able to tell each other everything,” Sakura reminded me, her false smile on her face again. “So, see? It’s okay, Tomoyo. You can tell me...”
I shook my head, glancing at our hands that were still clasped. “It’s...”
“Tomoyo, I love you,” Sakura assured me. If only she knew...
“No,” I growled.
Sakura backed away, pulling her hand from mine. “Tomoyo?” Her eyes glittered with fear for what I might say next.
“You don’t love me,” I whispered, “not the way I love you...”
Sakura didn’t answer, but the fear in her eyes was replaced with confusion.
“You don’t love me,” I continued, “like I want you to.”
Still no response.
“Sakura, I love you,” I explained, standing up and placing my hands on her shoulder. “I love you from the bottom of my heart. I love you more than anyone ever will...” I looked into her sparkling green eyes, my frown still in place.
“Tomoyo...”
“You don’t have to say anything,” I told her, quickly looking away. “I...I’m sorry.”
Sakura smiled, this time a sincere smile. “No,” she grinned, pulling me in for a hug. “You can’t help the way you feel...”
“But...Syaoran...”
Sakura pulled away, her arms behind her back, bending over slightly, her smile still in place. I couldn’t help but to return the smile now; she was adorable. “We’re still very young,” Sakura explained. “Some of us grow up faster than others, like Rika...and you. Others take a little more time.” Her smile expanded into a wide grin. “I’m on of those.”
“Sakura, that’s not true,” I whispered. “You’re very grown up.”
“In some ways,” she agreed, “but I’m still clueless with love. To me, both you and Syaoran are simply friends...but that doesn’t mean you’ll never become more.” Her eyes seemed to glow now as she looked up at me with admiration. “I really like you, Tomoyo. I’m not sure how deep that is yet, but I do know that you’re the closest person to me...” She stood on her tip- toes now, pressing her lips against mine. I felt my cheeks turn crimson, my eyes wide with shock. When she pulled away, she grinned and said, “Now, I want you to promise me something.”
I nodded, smiling back at her.
“Until I figure things out...I want you to smile, even when times are tough,” Sakura told me, taking my hand once more. “I want you to always smile. Smile for me.”
“I will,” I promised. “Until you figure things out, I’ll smile for you, Sakura!”
