XVII.

A mother’s betrayal was just as worse as murdering.

Despite the guilt that ran in her mind every day, it was okay. At least it felt fine right now; after all they had literally shoved a pill down her throat. For the moment, she couldn’t feel pain-the mental guilt or the internal bleeding from her throat to the blood that tickled down her mouth. She felt numb. It felt nice, and her days indoors weren’t as bad as the first month when she arrived. In the beginning she had a roommate-that was until her roommate disappeared. She was alone-but it didn’t matter, after all it wouldn’t be considered as solitary confinement if she weren’t.

The pills she too had a drastic effect on her. Her once beautiful jet-black hair was turning gray and so she found herself aging very quickly. But there was nothing to look at-no mirrors were allowed near her. But Julia knew that she was getting ugly and fast. But it was okay-because she couldn’t feel or see herself aging. Everything was okay as long as she couldn’t feel anything. Not the guilty feeling of killing her daughter, not the feeling or aging, or her throat literally bleeding.

“It’s…okay…” She sang-painfully as her throat was hurting but it mattered not since she was numb. Tears ran down her eyes, her moans echoing in the white room as she banged her hands against the soft wall. “It’s…okay.” She reminded her self. It wasn’t. It wasn’t okay that she had killed Rinoa, or her own husband. It wasn’t okay that her throat was hurting or the fact that she was turning ugly and old. Nothing she did or had done was okay. Realizing this, Julia banged her head against the wall.

“The pill must’ve worn off.”

Julia looked up the voice. Beautiful and child-like the nurse looked and sounded. With calm black eyes and silky hair. And oddly enough, the nurse looked like her. Rinoa, the daughter she had killed. Or at least she had failed to kill. Slowly rising, Julia lunged towards the nurse. But within a blink of an eye, she found her vision getting blurry. She heard whimpers somewhere. From someone…were they crying?

Were they crying for her?

….

“She’s been like that for weeks now…and I’m afraid she won’t be getting any better.”

The words were enough to make Rinoa grow quiet as she watched her mother fainting. “The patient still believes that you are dead for one reason or another.” The doctor explained, checking his notes for correction. Rinoa nodded, holding Squall’s grip against her arm as she looked away, pressing her cheek close to Squall’s chest in response. “I hate to tell you this, but her unstable condition means no more visiting.” There came no response at first, but then:

“Then we should leave…” Rinoa spoke, words bitter but set on never seeing the pathetic woman she once called ‘mother’. The sentence left the room with an awkward silence until she stood slowly then grabbing her coat as Squall unwillingly trailed behind. He chased her, holding her hands as they mounted on the elevator and rode down in silence. It was Rinoa’s way of calming down. Talking to her when angered only frightened Squall further.

But it was worth a try.

“Rinoa-”

“Not now.” She spoke. Rinoa jabbed her hands into her coat pockets as she sat inside the car, waiting as Squall joined her. True she was impatient but Squall would have to deal with it until she got better. Rushing her wouldn’t be the right choice. “Goddamn it!” She cursed, spilling what was left of her unfinished coffee unto her skirt. Squall held back a burst of laughter that arose, only looking down as he handed her a napkin.

“You just got out of the hospital two days ago, try not to over do it.” He said, offering her a kiss on the cheek. She sighed, looking out the window in silence. ‘Ice cold, don’t you think Rin?’ Squall thought. True Rinoa had gone cold from the experience, but then no one could blame her. After being hospitalized for three weeks, Squall was only glad that Rinoa didn’t snap at him all the time…only sometimes.

“Squall…” Rinoa called, her voice shaking. The brunette looked up, noticing tears already deciding to come down. It wasn’t rare to see her crying; but since being hospitalized with multiple surgeries and horrifying news of her mother’s intents…this was the first. Julia had planned to kill Rinoa for Caraway’s fortune-this Rinoa had known for a while and even then she did not cry. And to see her suddenly break down suddenly tormented Squall.

He sighed, rubbing his forehead as the car stopped. Rinoa looked up to embrace him, kissing him like there was no tomorrow. Squall didn’t understand but hadn’t stopped to question it. If this was her way of grieving then he really liked it. ‘No…it’s bad to think that.’ He thought, mentally scolding himself. He pulled her away gently, kissing her forehead all the while trying not to make her too mad.

“I’m sorry.” She whispered. “I don’t know what to do…I just lost both my parents.”

Squall only caressed her soft skin, offering comfort in his arms. She took it, burying her head under his chest. “Things are going to change…for the better. I mean, you lost your parents but now…at least you have a new family.” Rinoa looked up. “Remember? I’m still here…and so is everyone else.”

She nodded.

“Yeah…I know.” She planted a kiss on his forehead.

“Squall…I love you.” She sat on his lap, and despite the fact that they were in a parking lot it didn’t matter. Squall laid her down in the back seat, finding it hard not to resist the beauty that lay before him. Rinoa smiled as hands roamed around her body, eager eyes wanting nothing more than to explore every part of her body.

“W-Wait…Squall.” She whimpered. “I don’t wanna do it in a car.”

Squall came into a pause and laugh.

“What? I was just looking for my car keys.” He joked. Rinoa frowned and hit him.

“Rinoa…?” He called.

She looked up.

“I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” He confessed. She smiled.

“I do too.”

Squall smiled, brining his lips down to hers once more. She smiled as the two fell off the seats and into an eternal embrace.
