Moonlight Serenade
© Triskell, March 11, 2001

A deep darkness had fallen onto the junkyard that was penetrated only by the ethereal music that drove the Jellicles on in their dancing. Eyes adjusted to the night glowed brightly here and there and twisting bodies attested to feline grace and controlled power.

A ginger queen and a grey tabby stood at the outlines when the silent group stepped back, slinking off into the nearest shadows or sinking to the ground, making way for an ancient ritual, an offering of innocence to the cat they had all descended from, the Everlasting Cat that dwelt among the stars, paw in paw with the moon.

They advanced towards each other slowly, each step carefully placed until they came face to face. A whispering wind brushed across the open space, ruffling their fur but neither noticed as they gazed into the others' eyes.

Iridescent green and soulful brown, plants and earth - two parts of a whole as the world and the sky, the moon and the sun, the male and the female.

The queen broke into a smile, nodding slightly and turned, presenting her back to her partner. The tabby stroked across her arms and down her flanks, his paws fastening around her waist as he lifted her up gently.

She let herself fall, glide smoothly across his shoulder, arms and legs outstretched, the white fur on her chest catching the glow of the moon high above, a vision of elegance and femininity.

A subtle tension touched each cat in turn, they sought their partners, oblivious of the couple in their midst, who were still, like statues in perfect balance.

The spell was broken as the tabby lifted his paw to run it along the queen's quivering thigh, taking a firm hold of her as she slid off his shoulder, into his arms. Their eyes met for a moment before the queen was lowered, carefully and painstakingly slowly to the ground. She stretched out, smiling, holding the brown eyes with hers, steadily.

The young tom bit his lip, once again reaching for her, caressing the soft fur, the pliant body, drawn towards her irrevocably as she laid her paws onto his shoulders. A name, whispered against the quiet, snatched away by the wind answered with another name that vanished as quickly as it was spoken.

A cloud passed over the moon, the night protecting the silent offering to the Goddess, shielding it from the gaze of those who were nothing but outsiders on a night when two kittens found their first love in each others' arms…

The End.
