The day of remembrance was here.

It was an ordinary morning, filled with the usual gossip and grumbling over coffee. All had forgotten.

She wore her sorrow, that black dress, her rarely seen diamond. The sight jarred those who knew; too shamed to admit they had forgotten, they took a moment to give her a gentle touch, a shared memory.

When asked who sent the white roses, she just smiled and said an old friend.

He would have brought her flowers, to mark their day of firsts. Their first embrace, their first kiss. Had he survived, their first night together.
