It was a warm July day. The sun poured down on the rows of identical grey houses and perfectly manicured lawns of Privet Drive, Surrey. Outside number four was a thin teenage boy with messy black hair. Although the residents of Privet Drive neither knew nor cared, he had emerald green eyes and a thin lightning bolt scar on his forehead.

The boy was labouring over a flowerbed, sweat pouring down his back. He was clothed in large baggy clothes that dwarfed his lithe frame, at the most 5'6". He had the look of someone who had been starved for several months, to the point of emaciation. All light was gone from his eyes. The eyes of someone who had seen too much, too young. The boy's name was Harry Potter.

But Harry Potter was not an ordinary boy, in fact he was as exceptional as it was possible to be. Harry Potter was a wizard. Yet Harry's uniqueness did not end there. He was famous in the wizarding world, because of a dark wizard named Voldemort. Voldemort had, as many wizards and muggles before him, tried to take over the world, or at least England. Lord Voldemort was a Dark wizard and his method of conquering the world was by killing or blackmailing all those who opposed him. Still England was not to give up without a fight. The leader of the resistance was a man named Albus Dumbledore, a man said to be the most powerful wizard alive.

Fighting with Dumbledore were Harry's parents, James and Lily Potter. Voldemort had targeted the couple along with Harry, who had been only a year old at the time. The Potters hid with the help of a charm called the Fidelius Charm, which would hide them from sight even if Voldemort had been staring into their kitchen window. To do this charm, they needed a secret keeper with in whom the secret would be kept. Albus Dumbledore had urged the Potters to make him their secret keeper; however, James wanted to entrust the secret to Sirius Black, his best friend and Harry's godfather. Sirius knew that Voldemort would think of him and seek him out. So without telling anyone the Potters switched secret keepers to Peter Pettigrew - another family friend.

This was a fatal mistake. Peter Pettigrew betrayed the Potters and told Voldemort where they were hidden. And so on Halloween night 1981 Voldemort apparated to Godric's Hollow and killed James and Lily. He then tried to kill Harry, but strangely enough, the curse backfired hitting Voldemort instead, leaving him a mere spirit. Voldemort fled. The only mark remaining of him was a thin cut on Harry's forehead in the shape of a lightning bolt.

Sirius had gone to check on Peter and when he found him gone had apparated to Godric's Hollow which he found to be a burning wreck. Sirius had raced inside to try to save the bodies of his best friends, and to his amazement found his godson still alive. He took Harry out intending to take him to his house for the time being. In the meantime, Dumbledore had felt the wards he had set up fail and had sent Hagrid, a soft-hearted half giant, to check if anyone had survived and then bring them to him. After arguing for a while Sirius agreed to let Hagrid have Harry, intending to come for him later. This was not to be.

Grief-stricken, Sirius hunted Peter down in a muggle street where the betrayer, after accusing Sirius of killing their best friends, blew up the whole street, killing twelve muggles in the process. Peter then cut of his own finger, and after transforming into his rat animagus form, escaped down the sewers, leaving Sirius in the middle of the street laughing at his own folly. The aurors captured him 'at the scene of the crime' and without a trial threw Sirius into Azkaban Prison, where he stayed for 12 years before escaping the horrible Dementors by turning into his Animagus form – a large black dog, and swimming to safety.

The loss of a guardian caused Harry to be placed with his muggle relatives. Both his aunt and uncle hated magic and wizards to such an extent that it bordered on obsession. Harry spent the next eleven years being half starved, neglected, and treated as a slave. Until he turned eleven, he had been led to believe his parents died in a car crash. The arrival of his Hogwarts letter and the subsequent revelation that he was a wizard, took him by surprise. So Harry went off to Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry where the renowned Albus Dumbledore was a headmaster, only returning to the Dursleys for the summer holidays.

The next four years were the best of his life. Harry learned magic and for the first time in his entire life made friends, which could never do in the past as his large cousin Dudley bullied and scared all the other children away. Harry became a Gryffindor, played Quidditch – a wizard sport played on broomsticks. Though the weight of being the saviour of the world was on his shoulders he endured it well and over the course of the years stopped Voldemort from coming back and becoming immortal; saved his best friend Ron's little sister Ginny from being killed by a memory of Voldemort that had been held in a diary for fifty years; saved his godfather's soul. However fourth year did not end well. Voldemort had returned with only Harry and Voldemort's servants – the Death Eaters, living to bear witness, the other student Cedric Diggory having been killed by Peter Pettigrew who had resurrected his master. Voldemort was back, but with the wizarding world having been informed Harry was mentally unstable no one but Dumbledore believed him. Dumbledore had immediately begun preparing and regathering his old allies. Harry, however, was back at Privet Drive for the summer, and back to being treated like a slave.

'Well really,' Harry thought bitterly, 'They would treat a servant better. I'm more of a house elf.' Aloud he imitated the small creatures who worked at old wizarding manors and buildings. 'I is enslaved to serve one family until I is dead.' he muttered, 'Or at least until I can legally do magic outside of school.'

His aunt and Uncle had in past years taken away his trunk and wand; however, the threat of Sirius Black, the 'escaped murderer' who was Harry's godfather prevented them from doing so this year. Harry felt sure that if they were not so afraid of other wizards, they would have happily snapped his wand in half.

This summer was unusual in another way as well. Harry had had no communication with his friends Ron and Hermione. Hedwig, his owl, always came back with his letters unopened bearing no reply. So he had come to realize that they were simply ignoring him.
