This is my first Fan-fic, so bare with me here. I’m usually not big on criticism/ bashing, but for this story ONLY, go ahead!
A Black and White Photograph Chapter 1/ Uncovered‘I have had many odd dreams lately. But I don’t know what they mean....’
Sora awoke upon the beach. He rubbed his head as he sat up, the dizzying colors started to evaporate into the morning mist. The sun wasn’t up and he wasn’t to keen on rushing it. As his head began to clear, he tried to remember what had happened the previous night. Nothing having come to mind, he dropped it for a lost cause for now. He would attempt again later, once he had eaten breakfast. Until then, he sat on the white sand; the cool air brushing against his cheeks and through his brown hair, bringing the smell of salt-water to his nose. He watched wave after wave wash up to shore and he imagined the water trying to stretch toward him so he could swim in it’s deep, blue current. He soaked in the relaxing sounds of the water folding over itself and splashing the surface. He looked down absent-mindedly at the soft grain beneath him. He started fingering the sand and drawing.
The sun had worked its way past the horizon. Kairi slowly moved across the beach. Sora held a long, thin twig, the tip was covered in mud. He sat in before a set of large letters. She couldn’t make it out at that angle, so she continued to creep up behind the scrawny boy. As she got closer she could read, ‘ALL MARY-SUES MUST DIE !!’. She couldn’t help herself...she started to laugh. Sora jumped at the sudden sound and turned to see whom the culprit was. “Oh, hey, Kairi! Uh...,” he glanced at the writing in the sand. “I woke up early.” He said as a truthful excuse.
“So I can see. But why are you out on the beach?” she asked.
“Um... I don’t know.”
She began to laugh again. “Well, are you at least gonna get dressed first?” Sora looked down at his clothes. He hadn’t even noticed that he was wearing his plaid pajama pants and a grey t-shirt. He blushed a few shades of pink.
Later
An hour and a half later, Sora returned to the beach... in his normal clothes and a full stomach. Searching the water without a trace of his best friends, he climbed to the island, and sure enough... Riku lay in the tree like always, Kairi lay on he stomach in the patch of shadow that the tree provided. Sora smiled as he looked at his best friend and his crush. He couldn’t really ask for more then the two of them to always stay with him, forever, except maybe to get off that stupid island!
He walked over to them. Riku opened his eyes enough to see the approaching visitor and smirked at him for God knows what! Kairi rolled over to see him and smiled. “Nice to see you again, Sora.” Kairi welcomed. “Yeah, sleep well?” added Riku.
Sora sat close to Kairi. “Uh, yeah, actually. Do you guys remember what we did last night?” Kairi answered, “I went in early. It was just you and Riku outside when the sun went down.” She looked at Riku waiting for him to speak. Riku resituated so he sat up a little. He couldn’t feel superior if he couldn’t see their faces beneath him “We sat on the beach for a while, remember? I didn’t leave too long after Kairi, so it was just you. Why?”
“Ah, it’s nothing.” Sora said quickly, not wanting him to also find out that he was just sitting out on the beach in his pajamas. It wasn’t that bad, but it was still a little embarrassing. Riku looked at him awkwardly in confusion. Kairi just giggled. Riku looked lost then rolled his eyes at them. “I’m not even gonna ask.” Which only made her giggle harder as Sora gave off a light blush.
“So what are we doing today?” asked Sora, a little eager to change the subject.
Riku and Kairi both shrugged. “I dunno.” Sora sighed, “I need a hobby.” Sora stood up and begins to walk away. Kairi saw. “Where are you going?”
Sora turned to her and shrugged carelessly, “I dunno. Anywhere!”
He descended the stairs two at a time. ‘Where should I go? Where should I go?’ He made his way back to the secret place. Once he made his way into the deepest chamber, he collapsed unto the damp floor. Sitting Indian style didn’t last long and he ended up laying down with his hands behind his head. He tried to remember his dream and what Riku and him had talked about the night before. What was it? He tilted his head to the side and caught sight of the drawings he and Kairi had made when they were younger. He had to admit that she was a much better artist at the time. But when they were small, he would’ve said she breathed better then him.
He thought back to how much he loved Kairi then. Kairi! That’s it! That’s what we talked about. Riku had wanted to know exactly how or what he felt for Kairi. And he was perfectly honest. Nothing. She is only a best friend to him. He cares for Riku now! Only Riku. Not that he told him that. But he can’t wait too much longer, he knew, because now that Sora’s out of the way, he may go after her. What is he thinking? He wouldn’t have asked about her if he wasn’t going to chase after her. Unless... unless he wants him back! Now she’s gone, He was free to be picked up... but so was she. His mental argument was interrupted by someone making their way in. He could hear the rustling of vines and roots that grew on the cave walls as someone crawled along the passage. A silver head emerged the other end. “I thought I saw you came in here.” The 15-year-old moved to Sora’s side and sat down. “What’s up, Riku?” Sora asked, trying to keep his voice as even as possible. It had become harder and harder to speak to him since he began to seriously consider actually telling him ‘What’s up’.
“I was gonna ask the same for you, actually.”
“I’m bored.”
“You, too?”
“Are you and Kairi tired of this place, too?”
“Since forever, but how would our parents agree to letting us just up and go?”
Sora laughed. “They don’t!” They spent the next 3 hours talking about everything from somewhere beyond to the other side of the island, from red suns to blue moons, from their parents to Kairi. Neither sounded to enthusiastic about talking about the girl, but Sora hoped now was as good a time as ever. So drawing a deep breath, he tried to begin.
“Uh, Riku... um...can, I mean... d-do you like Kairi?” Okay, so it wasn’t straight out, but this will at least solve the mental argument that was still shooting back and forth in his head. Riku looked the slightest bit surprised and confused.
“I... I’m not sure.” He replied truthfully. “Why?”
Sora thought for a minute. He wanted to tell him, but if there was rejection on the other side, he didn’t want to hear it. But what if it wasn’t rejection? What if a picture of him and Riku together awaited him? He’d do anything for that! Anything for the icy blue eyes to want him. So he tried again.
“I-I need to t-tell you something. I, um... I-”
“You love me?” Riku questioned. Sora looked up at him in surprise. Riku was completely calm, showing absolutely no emotion, love or hate.
