This is a short one-shot about Yami watching Yugi as he sleeps. It's not a songfic, but a song inspired me to write this called Breathing, by Lifehouse. The chorus goes like this: 'I am hanging on every word your saying, even if you don't want to speak tonight that's alright, alright with me, 'cos I want nothing more than to sit outside your door and listen to you breathing, that's where I want to be'. Hence the title.
Disclaimer: I don't own Yu-Gi-Oh... blah blah blah you've heard it all before so onto the story!
The room is in darkness, and though everything that surrounds us is in shadow, your face is awash in moonlight. You breathe deeply, softly, dreaming your own peaceful dreams, and I sit on the edge of the bed and watch you.
When did I start to love you? Was it when you finally put the puzzle together, and released me from my centuries of sleep? Was it during Duelist Kingdom, when I battled Kaiba and you stopped me from victory, because it could have resulted in his death? Was in during the battle with Pegasus, when you proved willing to give up your own life to save that of your family and friends? Whenever it was, I know now that I could not bear to ever let you go.
Through these times I have seen your courage, your determination, your selflessness, and above all your strong bond with any whom you befriend. You befriended me, one of darkness, and now I cannot be without you. You are my light.
This place in which I now live is far, so very far away from the golden sands where I lived, those thousands of years ago. So far away from the rich vastness of Egypt. And yet, now I feel as though I am home.
You sigh in your slumber, and I feel a leap in my heart. You are asleep, and I am only sitting next to you and watching, yet I would not be anywhere but here in this moment. I am content to watch over you, and to listen to you breathing. It is all I need. You are all I need.
"Yami..." You turn your face towards me and murmur, still lost in dreams, and I cannot help myself. I lean over, and place my arm by your head, and very softly, so as not to wake you, caress your cheek, pale in the moon's glow. "Aishiteru, Yami..." You sigh again, and move closer to my touch, and your quiet breathing carries on as before.
I love you too, my aibou.
