The what lay flat on the moist cement. It appeared like a trashload. Between the shadows, we could almost distinguish nearly human features, but not quite. Like a post-post-post-modern era. We approach it. And oh god, it stinks, it stinks and it quivers and its gruesome. It holds a green plastic bag to itself, bursting with things. We want to know what it hides, what it withdraws. The what barks when we rip it away, but luckily it doesn't bite. We open the bag.
From it cascades a bottle of empty burger, monopoly dollars, a torn flag, an outdated bus pass, a slice of rotting society and a photo of the what, when it was small and human and it wanted to become an astronaut.
Explanation
'The what' took me a month to build and a night to polish. I consider it my 'my masterpiece' up to date, and since the first 3 people I have given this piece to did not understand it, here is to my point of view, as an author. The reader is most welcome to post his or her own view, for this is only my humble opinion. We do not write stories, the works write themselves, so you'd be surprised at how many interpretation of a whole this could have.
'The what'- is obviously, a human being. Homeless of rich, it doesn't tell. It could be any of them from what I can tell.
'trashload'/'gruesome' - easily thrown away, disposed of. Unworthy of any particular attention as an individual.
'between the shadows'- things that obscure our vision, conceal information.
'post-post-post-modern-era' - I personally have a very negative gaze over our 'modern' society, and an even darker appreciation for the future. Filthy, but in the same time /us/, our future, what we will all inevitably become. So this works paradoxically, on 2 basis: future of mankind and our own future in life.
'green plastic bag' - trash bag, of course. I always found that colour undeniably ugly.
'we want to know'-'rip it away'- Human curiosity always fascinated me. We are awfully selfish and we would use any animalistic or violent methods to succeed in our quests, be they immoral or not. We are so much like animals that's we're almost underneath them.
'Bark but no bite' (no explanation needed)
'cascades' - Flood. Endless/ never-ending. That won't go away, disperse.
'bottle of empty burger' -speaks for itself. If you really do not understand, ask me.
'monopoly dollars' - has as much value as our own money, when you ponder on it; in the same time, it has nothing at all. Illusions. Hope.
'torn flag'- 'Live here! Live for your open-minded society'…so they can tear everything form you, throw you in the mould and make you perfect.
'buss pass' - Can get you anywhere, can't it? sneer
'Astronaut'- Flying away. Adventure. Hopes. Dreams. Excitement. Joy. Stars. Shining. Looking/standing above everything else. Humanity's expectations. Surpassing the 'known' knowledge. Being someone.
