Summary: Summer sees Seth for the first time after he comes back to Newport
Title: What You Wanted
Summer was laying in a lawn chair beside Marissa’s pool with her, tanning.
“Did you hear Seth and Ryan came back to town?” Marissa asked suddenly.
“What?” Summer asked, jolting upright.
“Obviously not.”
“When? Why?”
“I don’t know all the details, Seth’s mom called me, she told me Ryan was back.”
“Are you going to see him?”
“I don’t know, it would just be awkward. Are you going to see Seth?”
“No, I’ve moved on, going to see him would just bring back all the pain we went through.”
“You talk to your therapist too much.”
“That’s the relationship we have. I dish my heart out to him, he gets a hundred bucks an hour to hear me whine.”
“You get that from me for nothing.”
“Except I’m wallowing in my own self pity around you.”
“Paying a hundred dollars gets you out of that self pity?”
“No, but it gets my parents to flip out about extra bills they need to pay because of me, that makes me laugh.”
“Go see him, Summer.”
“I don’t want to.”
“Go, you know you miss him
“Fine.” Summer stood up and walked out of the yard.
A few minutes later, Summer was in front of Seth’s house. She walked up to his door and hesitantly rang the doorbell.
Mrs. Cohen opened the door. “Hey, did you come to bring more of Seth’s stuff?” she asked, letting Summer in the house.
“No, I, uh, I heard he came home. Is he here?”
“Yeah, in his room go on up.”
Summer walked up the stairs and knocked on Seth’s door before opening it. She walked in to find him laying on his bed, separating M&M’s by color.
“Is there a reason you’re sorting your candy?” she asked.
He looked up and saw her but looked away to avoid her eyes. “What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to see you again.”
“I look the same.”
“But you’ve changed, three months away from the people you love had to change you.”
Seth shrugged, still not looking at her. “I heard you have a new boyfriend, Zek.”
“Zach,” she corrected him.
“Right, sorry,” he said unenthusiastically.
“Jesus, Cohen, don’t give me that attitude, I’m the hurt party here. I’m the one who got my heart broken when you left.”
“But you moved on, it’s not important anymore.”
“I haven’t moved on. Zach’s just a temporary distraction.”
“From what?”
“The so called life I was living while you were gone.”
“I’m sorry I hurt you, I really am. I honestly didn’t think about how me leaving would affect my family... and you,” he said, finally looking up at her
“Obviously. How come it took you so long to come back?”
“I took my boat and it sank, I had no way to get back until Ryan came to get me.”
Summer smiled. “What really happened?”
“I ran out of snacks and freaked out, I ended up taking the bus to Portland.”
She laughed then frowned at him. “I really missed you.”
“Yeah, me too.”
“Why’d you leave?”
“You know why.”
“No, I really don’t, I don’t understand why you left.”
“I hated it here, Ryan was my only friend and he left-”
“You had me, we could have gotten through it together.”
“I realized that after it was too late.”
“I love you, Seth.”
He smiled and looked back down at his M&M’s. “I only eat the brown ones.”
“What?”
“M&M’s, I only eat the brown ones, there’s less artificial coloring since chocolate’s already brown.”
“That’s a quote from ‘The Wedding Planner.’”
“I know, Luke’s dad’s really into chick flicks.”
“Wow, I envy anyone who can get you to sit through two hours of romance when there’s no sex in the movie.”
“Hey, there’s Jennifer Lopez, that’s all it takes.”
“I love you,” she said again, looking into his eyes.
“I love you too.” He sat up and kissed her but she quickly pulled away from him. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m still with Zach,” she reminded him.
“Oh, yeah.”
“I’ll break up with him.”
“You don’t need to, if you want to be with him I won’t stop you.”
“I don’t know what I want right now.”
“You want my M&M’s.”
“What?”
“You won’t stop looking at them, if you want some take them.”
“Well, seeing as you only eat the brown ones.” She picked up a few M&M’s and put them in her mouth.
“Can we start over?”
“I think that would be good.”
He held out his hand to her. “I’m Seth Cohen.”
She pushed his hand away and laughed. “I don’t want to go back that far.”
“How far do you want to go back?”
“Before you left. Can we just pretend none of that happened?”
“Yeah, could work too.”
Summer laughed and pulled him in for a kiss. Seth was too shocked to reciprocate for a few seconds, but then he relaxed and kissed her back.
