Alex wasn’t like most girls that was for sure, she didn’t care about pathetic things like gossip and getting a date to the semi-formal. She was probably tougher then most of the guys in the school and could kick their arse in seconds. She was seen as strong and fearless. Strong yes but she wasn’t fearless, he was probably the only guy in the world who knew that though, knew what was behind all the walls and insults.

She was barley even a person anymore she was just the remains of one. A long time ago she was broken and ever since then people had started taking different pieces of her, there was barley anything left. It was pointless to try and piece her back together too much was missing. Just knowing that explained why she always acted so tough, why she couldn’t let anyone in her world, she couldn’t let them take what was left of her, she had lost too much already.

Jay knew that he was probably the only person who ever stuck around long enough to get past the walls, see the broken and scared girl underneath. Just as she was the first person to get through his walls, see he was just as broken and scared as her. It scared him most of the time.

They both learned along time ago that they could only depend on themselves but when some comes along who you know you can depend, its terrifying because when you have something to hold on to you have something worth losing. Neither of them had ever had anything worth losing.

Alex probably spent most of her time at his house, slept there most nights. He liked it best that way his mom was too self-absorbed and his father was to drunk to care about the girl in his bed, they probably didn’t even notice. He’d prefer her safe with him then at home with her abusive father her mother was smart enough to leave when the abuse got to much, of course she left Alex with her father. Apparently protecting her daughter wasn’t high on her to do list. Left Alex to take her beatings.

The first time Jay found out about her father he was ready to pound him into a bloody pulp. Alex would never let him though no matter how badly he hurt her both emotionally and physically. She tells him that he was still her father then changes the subject. He always wondered why he was protecting him after the hell he put her through.

As bad as it was for his male ego Alex protected him too. Not that he would admit that to anyone, just as she would probably never admit that he protected her. She was there when his dad passed out which became regular, or when he started pulling all nighters, went out to get drunk and left Jay alone.

He didn’t need to be a cutesy little couple though, they had both grown pass the ‘cutesy’ stage along time ago. They didn’t need to prove they cared by sickening pet names; it wasn’t anyone’s business what they felt for each other. Towerz thought they wee just together because it was convenient; then again he spent along time being the third wheel to them watching them all over each other. Sean probably thought the same thing, thought it was ridiculously to think two people could be together as long as Alex and Jay had if it was just because it was convenient. They weren’t about to prove to Towerz and Sean that they cared about each other it just wasn’t there style.

Jay looked over at Alex who was under the covers of his bed. She was still awake that was nothing new to him though she wasn’t exactly the best sleeper, when she did sleep she woke them both from nightmares. She had real fears she wasn’t afraid of exams or the monster under the bed she had real fears. Alex took her view of the roof and looked at Jay.

“What?” She asked.

“Nothing” Jay told her.

“Right sure” Alex said not believing him.

“Does there always have to be something wrong?” Jay asked.

“Yeah Jay, that’s the way the world works remember” Alex told him rolling her eyes.

“Aren’t we jaded” Jay said.

“Don’t make me hurt you,” she said she was now joking.

“Right sorry I’ll be good” Jay joked back.

“Good as long as you know where things stand,” She joked.

“Just go to sleep” Jay said. Alex just rolled her eyes once again, but she eventually got comfortable as they went back to trying to sleep.
