The phone had been ringing off its hook for ages now, he could almost picture it steaming like an overused engine. He wasn’t going to set himself up for another round of disappointments, but his finger had already pressed the redial button long before he could redeem enough of himself from the last fruitless bout.

And the hollowed melody of yet another unanswered call echoed on and on in his head, almost like an unworded premonition. Whatever happened to the genki answering voice, which until now had never failed to grate at his nerves before putting his line through? Where was the juvenile squeal of “BEEEEP!”, long and shrill before the real one actually piped on? Where was the excited “Hello?”, the whiney squeak of “Kae-chan!” after his flat, caustic utterance of “Do’ahou”? The endless rants and raves about nothing at all…?

He may not be ready to own up to it, but he sure was missing all of those, despite the fact that it’s only been a day since they last saw each other, which was long enough, judging by how that guy seemed to have made it his sovereign duty to be with him at every possible second of everyday.

He was aching for his koi’s lively voice, his infectious laughter, the warmth, joy and security he always felt whenever his koi was around.

His koi…

He was missing his koi tonight. And terribly so that he just had to plunge the blasted button for the fifth time without even attempting to justify his own futile bullheadedness.

Somehow he knew nobody was around to take his call, but still he kept on, reaching up to a dozen and one attempts before finally giving up his noble cause.

He knew the phone would stop ringing eventually, and was more than grateful when it did. He got both of his hands full for tonight, and for the love of homo, even his mouth’s all stuffed up too! So God tell him how could he possibly answer that damn, annoying thing?

It wasn’t like he was expecting a call from someone important anyway. His mom had already called two nights ago, and considering her more than hectic business and social schedules, it was utter stupidity to expect for a second call from her in a single week.

His team… there wasn’t really anyone from there worth talking to, either. At least, not for now. If it weren’t Hiroaki armed with his deadly tirade about the emasculating implications of being too submissive to an overbearingly arrogant boyfriend, it would definitely have to be the meddlesome Hikoichi pestering him endlessly for his list of secrets to basketball greatness.

He was practically running out of things to say to the annoying kid that he was seriously considering telling him to go and get himself some height-enhancing pills. But that would be a little too caustic and rude especially coming from someone of his character, so he had no other choice but to pass.

Anyway, it wouldn’t hurt much to miss out on Secret #97 for today, would it?

“D-Da… Dame…!” he heard himself groan and for that short moment thought he was with his lover.

It was almost exactly like how his koi would work him up. Torture him and tease every end of his erogenous nerves close to paralyzing numbness.

His lover had always been good at it.

Good.

At it.

Only.

At it.

His lover would never call him up. EVER. That would be a little too warm and affectionate—a couple of beats off his tough, arctic manifestation of himself.

No, Kaede Rukawa would never have the balls to call somebody up, especially not this late in the night. Not unless the guy was so aching to be with him and use him up like how he was letting somebody else use him up tonight.

That’s the only sane reason there was in the world for that walking block of marble to have the nerve to call.

No, his lover would never call him up.

And no, he would never call the guy either.

Ever.

He was getting tired of what they had, or rather with what he had alone. He wanted more. Wanted something he knew Kaede Rukawa would never have the heart to give him.

Yes, this was for the better. What’s best for both of them.

“You’re zoning out again, Sendoh-kun,” the deep, gentle voice cut through his thoughts.

“Gomen… Maki-san…” he heard himself whisper as a single drop of tear bailed out from his eyes, quickly disappearing into his pillow.

Transient and unnoticed…

Like the love his koi had constantly shown him.

He couldn’t sleep, even though it had been a couple of hours since he gave up on the phone. He normally wouldn’t let anyone, or anything come between him and precious sleep, but tonight was different.

He took another glance at the little black box on his night table, cradling the life he had meant to give his koi.

Tonight he thought of bearing his soul to him. Show the guy that side of him that no one had ever seen. But by some unfortunate reason, the phone lines just wouldn’t cut him some slacks.

Of course, there was always tomorrow to look forward to. When his koi would finally come bouncing up his porch, throw the door open and fly into his arms.

Yes, there was always tomorrow.

Strange, though, for that’s exactly what had been preying on his nerves all evening.

He may have been the numbest lover, but he wasn’t the dumbest fool.

He knew, somehow, that tomorrow may not turn up the way he had thought it out to be.

And no other tomorrow would. Ever.

“Gomen…,” he muttered into nothingness as a drop of tear bailed out from yet another eye.

Heavy and bitter…

Like the ones he had constantly made his koi cry.

OWARI

Oh man, ain’t it just obvious how much I’ve missed my most beloved yaoi couple? Two RuSen in a single post!--and it's about six days past RuSen Day. P What’s with me and RuSen these days? I’m betting my life it’s got something to do with the Gravitation overdose I just had. .

Arigatou gozaimasu for reading, minna-san! V
