A Sirius Death Drabble

Dead. My godfather is dead.

It's all my fault, even though everyone from Remus to Ron tells me it's not.I have to bring him back. I have to atone for my sin by bringing him back to this world. This is why I am here again at the entrance to the veil. I can hear whispering again, coming from beyond it.

I will find Sirius again. I know he's in there.

Tentatively I take a step into the veil with one foot. I am relieved to find that there are steps leading down. Leaving my hesitation behind, I take a step into the veil. The stairs seem to go on forever but I keep climbing downward. My heart is hammering in my chest. I'm afraid but I have to find him.

I finally reach the bottom of the stairs to find that there is a marble floor. A blue sky with puffy white clouds floats around it. People are on the floor, in little groups, many of them talking to each other. A few are alone. I wander among them, seemingly unnoticed by any of them. I look at their faces as I pass. None of them look familiar to me. None of them look like Sirius.

It takes me a moment to notice that the people have a slightly transparent quality to them. I can almost see through them and it terrifies me. What if Remus was right? What if Sirius is dead?

And if so, what is this place?

Then I see him, sitting under a tree - the only tree in the entire "room". He is transparent like the rest of them but he looks better than he did after he got out of Azkaban.

"Sirius!" I call.

I rush to him, unable to contain my happiness at seeing him again. For a moment he looks as though he dosen't recognize me. Then his face cracks into a frown. My heart sinks. This was not what I expected.

"Harry?" he asks incredulously. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to get you," I say.

"You shouldn't be here," he says.

"But why? I've come to rescue you," I say.

Sirius hangs his head.

"You can't rescue me," he says. "I am going to be here for a long time."

This puzzles me.

"Why?"

"It is too late for me to come home. That's why I am here," he says.

He reaches towards me and tries to touch me. His hand passes right through me. My eyes widen in fear and shock.

"Sirus?"

"Yes, Harry?"

"What is this place?"

"Purgatory."

The End.
