CHAPTER I: A second too late.
Chris: “Hello?”
Chris checked around and didn’t see anything. His focus went back to the book, but he was still thinking this was suspicious… something was going on. The floorboards of the attic squeaked. Chris looked around to see where the noise was coming from, he didn’t see anything, but still walked over to baby Wyatt's side.
Chris: “Okay… It's time to get you out of here.”
As Chris reached for Wyatt, he got thrown across the attic. And Gideon revealed himself. Behind him, Chris heard a strange orbing-like sound, and with the corner of his eyes, he could see the wall was sputtering blue/white lights.
Chris: “What is going on?”
Gideon: “Don't make me sacrifice you both.”
Chris ignored the sputtering wall, thinking he’d deal with that later, right now he had to save Wyatt. He telekinetically threw Gideon away from Wyatt. Gideon, still in the floor conjured an athame, and stood up . As they both ran to baby Wyatt, behind Chris someone shouted desperately.
Big Wyatt: “Chris, watch out! Oh god, please NO!”
Only it was too late… Chris got stopped by Gideon’s athame in his way to his baby brother, and he felt to the floor.
Wyatt eyes started to get watery as he ran to his fallen brother.
Wyatt: “Oh this can’t be happening! I can’t have done all this to arrive a second too late. Chris never makes this kind of mistakes!”
Chris: “Dad!” He shouted in pain.
Wyatt got to Chris, and put an arm around his shoulders, lifting his head a little. Chris flinched, but was too weak to really move. “What is going on?” He thought “Am I hallucinating? What is Wyatt doing here? Worst…Why is he hugging me and crying, instead of trying to kill me? Am I dead and went to heaven? But Wyatt is not dead, and even if he was… he wouldn’t be in heaven”
Chris: ”What…?”
Wyatt looked at Gideon, so angry, that if looks could kill, Gideon would have died at least five times in that second. “If only I had my powers, I would vanquish your sorry ass so many times, asshole! But baby me seems to need my powers a lot more than me right now!” He thought
Wyatt: ”Shh… everything will be fine. Calm down, I’ll explain everything later. And you” He said to Gideon “bastard, you are a disgrace for your kind, let the baby go!”
Gideon: “Who…” Gideon didn’t get finish his question that Leo orbed in.
Leo: “Oh god…”
He ran to his son and looked at the stranger that was kneeling beside him, crying. The young men beside his son looked exactly like the young Wyatt he saw in the hallucination he just had. He wonder if he was still hallucinating, but something told him, he didn’t had time to wonder, or even to think too much. Chris’ voice broke his train of thoughts.
Chris:” Wyatt… Wyatt…”
He didn’t know if he meant big Wyatt or baby Wyatt. But Leo just followed big Wyatt’s stare.
Gideon: “It's for the best, Leo.” He said as he orbed away with the baby.
Chris moaned from the floor. They both looked at him worried; Chris wasn’t one to complain.
Leo: “Chris… Chris…” he had misty eyes too.
Wyatt: “Dad, do something! Heal him”
He was desperate; he knew his father couldn’t heal his brother. He had heard this story before, that was the reason he was here, to prevent it from happening! But then, why did he arrive so late? He was supposed to had arrived a couple of hours earlier than this, warned Chris about what was going to happen and come back. Now everything was messed up. His brother couldn’t die! Even if this wasn’t the brother he grew up with, this was the brother that had risked everything to give him and his Chris a better future…not to mention the world. This guy had saved the world, he deserved to live. And most important, this guy was his brother; his heart would brake in zillions of pieces if something happened to him.
Leo: “I can’t” he was getting desperate “Can’t you help me?”
Leo was too worried about Chris, to ask this guy, which seemed to be Wyatt, what he was doing there or if he was good or evil. He seemed as worried about Chris as he was, and that was all that mattered at this point.
Wyatt:” I don’t have healing powers, dad. And even if I did, baby me has my powers. You know, time travel ‘s laws…only one of the body’s in a plane of time can have the powers or whatever it was, and baby me needs them a lot more than I do, so we decided that it was really risky to cast a spell so I could get his powers.”
Leo: “Uh?”
Wyatt: “Ok, ok, I don’t know anything either. This kind of stuff is Chris’ kind of stuff, not mine. He explained the whole thing but I didn’t pay much attention. “
Chris:”Yeah, well maybe you should listen when I talk!” he said sarcastically.
Wyatt smiled between his tears; it was so nice to see his brother still had strength to act like his neurotic, sarcastic self. He caressed Chris’ hair
Wyatt: “Hurt and all you still have to boss me around, right bro? I always listen to what you say! It’s not my fault that my brain is not a magic encyclopedia like yours.” He sighed and looked at the wall, still caressing his hair. He said really sadly “Ahh you should have come with me, bro. You always know what to do!” Leo looked at him quizzically “Well, we kind of planned this with Chris, coming to the past and saving him and all. But he said there could be a problem if he came, because between this Chris over here, baby Chris that is about to be born and my Chris, there could be a cosmic failure or something like that, again… he is the walking magic encyclopedia, not me… and something horrible that we don’t know about could happen. Well, you can picture it…you should know how my brother is by now.” He looked sadly and adoringly at Chris, still lying with his eyes semi-opened on the floor. Leo was still trying to heal him “I just don’t know what went wrong, I should have arrived earlier. Chris never makes this kind of mistakes! And if he would have been here, he would have known what to do! SHOOT!”
Leo: “So you come from a good future? We did save you after all?”
Wyatt:”Yeah, but he paid the ultimate price and that WASN’T FAIR! My brother is NOT going to die!”
Chris moaned again, his eyes were loosing his focus; his face was getting sweaty and paler.
He looked at his brother confused, he was scared, but he was even more tired and wanted so much to believe he had saved the future, that he had saved Wyatt, even if that cost him his own life.
Chris looked around, he might have been dying, but he could die now… finally he had the only thing he had wanted since he was fourteen, or even less in the case of his father. The two men he loved the most were beside him, looking at him lovingly, worried and caring about him. That was all he had wanted since the day his mother died and his brother and father started running amok around the world, killing anything that would oppose them. He couldn’t have joined them; it would have been like betraying his mother. In one day Chris had lost his mom, his brother, best friend and everything and whatever he had for a dad, that wasn’t much, but it still was his dad.
Ironically, now in his deathbed he got what he wanted, both of them where there for him, caring, loving. He smiled at both of them, “I love you both!” He thought, but wouldn’t articulate the words. He wasn’t quite there yet. Still, he couldn’t hang on to his daydreams for ever; there was a job that needed to be done.
Chris: “We gotta find Gideon, we got to save Wyatt! If we did save him before, we gotta go and save him again” He said ever so weakly.
Wyatt:” Shh, Chris… just hang on, please. Hang on, bro. You just stayed here with us and calm down, ok? Everything is going to be fine”
Leo:” We gotta take him to a bed” Wyatt nodded and Leo orbed both of them to Piper’s room.
As they helped Chris into bed, he groaned in pain. Wyatt felt a chill that went all the way to his spine, he couldn’t stand seeing his brother like that, he looked at his father, he wasn’t holding up any better. His brother, on the other hand was still being his annoying duty oriented self.
Chris: “You have to find Wyatt.”
Wyatt knew he was right, if they didn’t save baby Wyatt, he would turn evil and everything would have been in vain, this Chris and the world would have to suffer, and Chris would have to keep on coming back in time and dying in the past eternally.
Leo: “We're going to find him together.” Trying to heal his son one more time.
Chris: “It won't work. You've already tried. Gideon's magic did this to me. He's the only one who can stop it. Just go… Saving Wyatt saves the future, you know that.”
Wyatt: “He is right dad, I hate to say this, but he is right”
Leo: “Gideon doesn't know how to kill Wyatt, remember? We still have time.”
Chris: “Only till they traumatize him”
Wyatt wanted to say so many things, but the words were stuck in his throat, he knew Chris was right. But how could he think about saving his baby self when his brother was dying!? On the other hand he knew that if they didn’t, he would probably turn evil right in front of them. And maybe he would kill his brother himself. That thought terrified him!
Leo: “I'm not going to choose between you and Wyatt, Chris. I can't.”
Chris: “You don't have to, dad… Find Gideon and you save us both.”
Wyatt clear his throat, trying to make the words, he didn’t want to say, come out of his mouth.
Wyatt: “He is right dad. The world is at stake, and if you don’t save my baby self, I might turn evil right in front of your eyes. We don’t know what might happen! I’ll stay here with him. I’ll try to fix a potion to help him. I’ll take care of him, I promise. You have to go. I can’t do anything without my powers!”
Leo looked suspiciously, Chris also looked frighten. “They have all the right” thought Wyatt “What if I am lying and I am still evil and I am taking advantage of this to kill Chris?”
Wyatt:”Yeah you guys are right! There is no way you could trust me. But what can we do? You can go and get one of the aunts, so she can check on me too. But I can’t go and get them, it would take me forever, and then I would have explain them the whole situation and make them believe me… you can orb me somewhere, or I can go with you dad. But then we’ll have to leave him alone”
Chris looked at his brother he looked so worried, so caring. He hadn’t seen that look on his brother’s face for years. And Wyatt had never been known for liking games like this. The dude was way too powerful to have to pretend to be good in order to kill his weak little brother. Besides he was agonizing! It’s not like dying a few minutes earlier would make a difference. If Wyatt would have wanted to kill him he would have done it before his father arrived, even without his powers, he wouldn’t be pulling this charade.
Chris:” Dad, it’s ok, if he wanted to do something he would have done it already. Just go”
Leo:” Alright… but I'm not leaving you alone, with him. I am sorry, Wy, but….”
Wyatt: ”It’s ok dad. I understand” He smiled weakly at his dad “Chris’ safety comes always first”
Chris: “Where are you going?”
Chris got scared, he was in so much pain and he felt so weak. He wished he hadn’t told him to go find Wyatt. He was dying, he knew it. And he was left with a brother that could be evil. He was feeling so sick, and his daddy was there, his daddy had never been there, and he felt selfish, but he wanted to die in his daddy’s arm. He wanted him to tell him everything was going to be fine. He wanted him to hold him tight and never let go. He wanted to allow himself to be a little boy again, and let his dad comfort him for all the nights he cried in his bed alone.
He wanted so many things, but as usual couldn’t, have any of them. That was his destiny, to live alone, to live neglected, to live under the shadows of his brother, to live second to all the innocents in the world, and it was also his destiny to die alone, to die neglected, to die to let the almighty double-blessed to shine alone, he was use to it, and he’d deal with it.
Leo: “I’ll get one of your aunts to watch over you. You're gonna be fine, okay. I promise…” He kissed his son’s forehead.
He felt like crying, he wanted to cry, crash and burn everything around him. Why was life so unfair to his poor little boy? He was nothing but good, they guy was the most selfless person he ever met. He was so proud of his son! And everything had been so unfair for him! All he ever did in his life was being good, and do what he was supposed to. He was the most responsible person in the world, he haven’t met anyone that worked harder and more selflessly than his baby boy. The elders should reward him with everything; still destiny punished him with death in the hands of an elder! How could Gideon have done that to Chris? Of all the elders, he was the one that knew him the most, the one that knew how he always sacrificed everything for the greater good, how much he suffered in silence, how he had given up having a life to fight evil. But he couldn’t be asked to sacrifice his life like that. Leo couldn’t see through the tears anymore. He kneeled down beside his son.
Leo:”I love you, Chris. I love you so very much, and I am so proud of being your father, I don’t deserve such a good son. But I couldn’t live without you, so please, please hold on for me, please?”
Chris tried to regain focus, it was hard. His father’s words resounded in his head. It was the first time he remembered hearing his dad saying he was proud of him. He had always tried obsessively to make his father proud, when he was a kid he worked hard to be the best at everything (something really hard when you are the double blessed’s brother). But his dad had never had time for him. He had waited all his life to hear those words. And he had waited so many years to hear his dad tell him that he loved him. He smiled weakly; at least he had heard those words before dying.
Chris: “I love you too, dad. A lot” It took a lot of his strength to muttered those words, his dad looked worried and caressed his face as he orbed away.
Wyatt was watching the scene, a smile glimpsed behind the tears in his eyes.
He went to his brother and caressed his hair. Chris tried to looked at him through his unfocussed eyes. Wyatt was smiling at him weakly, full of love, full of admiration and terrified.
Wyatt: “You heard the old man, right? You gotta hold on, bro. Cuz he’s been living with you for a year, you’ve been my best friend for twenty three. I don’t think I can handle loosing you, even if you are not my Chris’s version”
Chris: “I am not your version? What am I, a software? I am version 1.0?” he laughed weakly
Wyatt;” See… nobody makes me laugh like you” He laughed “I guess so, you are 1.0 and my version is 2.0”
Chris: “New and improved?”
Wyatt: “I don’t know bro, I haven’t had a chance to evaluate that, yet. That is why you gotta hold on. But I am definitely hoping you like my version 2.0 a lot better than my 1.0!” He smiled at him shuffling his hair.
Chris:” Well… but if I die here, you can always go back to your future and be with Chris 2.0!”
Wyatt eyes, already watery became a sea of tears.
Wyatt: “We don’t think so, Chris! We’ve been researching a lot, and everything tends to point to the idea that if you die here, he dies there too. So PLEASE, PLEASE don’t die. I honestly don’t think I could keep on living if you die”
He was crying insanely, Chris started to elaborate another theory of his own.
Chris: “Wy?” Wyatt looked at him attentively “Is mom alive in your future?”
Wyatt:”Yeah. Why… she is not in yours?” He asked looking compassionately at his brother. Chris didn’t answer, but his eyes said it all. Wyatt threw himself of top on his brother, hugging him. “Please, Please Chris, you can’t die. I would go insane!” he was crying.
Chris couldn’t stop thinking two things, first, how hard Piper was going to scold Wyatt for the blood stains he was going to have on his shirt and second, if Piper never died in his future, and his theory of what happened was correct. This Wyatt and his dad might have not been saved, just their turning might have been delayed and he was scared that if he died. His future would repeat again, only this time, it wouldn’t be Piper’s death what unleashed his family’s psychotic massacre of anything that would blink, but his own, and he wouldn’t be there to correct it.
