A/N: This morning, I was thinking about how ten- year old Walt never talked to Charlie but in All The Best he was so interested and concerned about him. This is a one shot, I hope you like it. Takes place the night Jack and Kate brought Charlie back to the caves after they revived him from his fateful hanging. …Woah, I wrote that well without going into hysterics…(progress!)

The Luckiest Man Alive

“Mr. Pace?”

“You can call me Charlie.”

Walter blinked. He remembered hearing Charlie speak to Jack a few hours ago, but he had seemed so out of it. Walt remembered how his mother used to joke around, telling him that he was ‘out of it’ or ‘insane.’ But she was only joking…so, if what happened to Charlie wasn’t a joke, what was it?

If Walt had been a little older, he would have used the term ‘spaced out.’

So, why was Charlie speaking now?

“My dad told me to give you this.” Walt bent down on his knees in front of Charlie. The man was curled up in a blanket on the ground, two pillows resting under his head. Footprints were all around his body from where people had been walking around him or stopping awhile to check up on him. Especially Kate and Jack, who seemed so interested in this situation.

“Thanks,” Charlie said, his voice had gotten back to normal very quick. He took the glass of water from Walt’s hand, propped himself up on an elbow and gulped it down.

Walt remembered when Jack and Kate had brought Charlie back. It was the man’s wheezing and gasping and half screams that had woken up the camp. But now, Charlie’s voice was the same as it had always been.

“Did it hurt much?” Walt asked, staring down at Charlie after the man had handed the glass back to him.

“Yeah,” Charlie answered, laughing slightly and laying back down.

“My dad says you could have died,” Walt said, falling down off his knees onto his butt as if deciding he was going to stay for a while longer.

“Yes, I guess I could have,” Charlie said, sounding ‘out of it.’ “I was lucky.”

“My dad said that I was the luckiest person he knew,” Walt informed Charlie.

“Michael, huh? He sounds like a pretty nice guy,” Charlie responded.

“No, Bryan. My step-dad. The other one.”

“Oh,” Charlie said with a slight nod, deciding not to push the subject. He knew how hard little kids took things like divorce.

“Guess you wouldn’t have been so lucky if the Doctor hadn’t saved you, huh, Charlie?” Walt asked.

“Guess not,” Charlie answered with a nod. “You’re right.”

Walt stood. “Feel better, Mr. Charlie,” Walt said, catching himself forgetting to call Charlie ‘Charlie’ and calling him ‘Mr. Pace’ instead. He tried to catch his mistake, and ended up calling him ‘Mr. Charlie.’

Charlie smiled. “Thanks, Walt.”

“Bye!” Walt called, and he stumbled off in a boyish manner.

A/N: Did you like? I just think Walt is a really cool character, and I wanted to have a little convo with Charlie, because he seemed pretty concerned, you know? And I thought the whole thing with Bryan telling Walt that he was the luckiest person he knew kind of fit in with Charlie’s situation. So, that’s kind of what brought it together.
