Link had become so attached to me since I told him I was pregnant. He spent every moment he could at my side. He held me and talked to the baby as he ran his fingers over my swollen belly.
Today was no different. Well, it was. I was in labor. I screamed as another wave of contractions ripped its way through my body.
"Hold on, honey. Just a little bit longer now," Link said and kissed my sweaty forehead.
"One more good push, Princess," the midwife said.
I screamed again and pushed with everything I had. I heard a baby cry. I relaxed into the pillows propping me up as Link handed me my baby boy. I started to tear up.
"He's perfect with his ten little fingers and his ten little toes," I sobbed. I had never been so happy in my life, not even when Link and I got married, which is saying something.
He looked just like Link. He smiled at me and tugged my hair. I looked at my husband, who had been silent the whole time. And I saw the reason for his quietness, his eyes were filled with tears, but he would not let himself cry in front of anyone but me.
I smiled at the midwife and signaled for her to leave. The instant the door closed, the tears fell down Link's face.
"What should we name him?" Link asked over the baby's happy cooing.
"I don't kno-AHH!" Link jumped when I cried out. "Get the midwife! Hurry!"
I watched a rather panicked Link dash out the door in search of the midwife. I groaned in pain again.
Link rushed in with the midwife, demanding to know what was going on.
"I suspected you would be having twins, highness," the woman chuckled knowingly.
"T-twins?" Link asked, thunderstruck.
The child inside me kicked and wriggled about, making me scream in confirmation.
My husband resumed his position next to me, clasping my hand tightly, murmuring words of love and encouragement as the waves of pain washed over me.
"Just breathe, highness. This 'un's delivering itself."
And she was right. In a matter of minutes, I had a daughter, as well.
I couldn't help but laugh at the look on Link's face as he held his two children. He looked so overwhelmed with happiness. My face probably looked the same.
In that moment, I missed Daddy more than ever.
"I just wish he could be here to see his beautiful grandchildren," I whispered.
Link leaned over, kissed me on my forehead, and deposited my babies in my outstretched arms.
"He is," my husband said simply, instinctively knowing who "he" was.
"I love you so much," I managed to choke out, still rather teary myself.
"I love you too," he replied. "But don't cry. Don't you dare cry," he commanded, becoming increasingly teary himself.
"We still need to come up with names," I said as we watched the nursemaids cleaning up the children.
"How about Ellimere and Mosrael after your parents?" Link suggested.
I started to cry again. "It's perfect," I whispered and kissed him deeply.
