Never Let Go
“Inuyasha…”
She was different.
“Inuyasha!”
She turned my monotone life upside down….
My name is Inuyasha. Sixteen, good looking, well built, the works…. But none of that mattered to me. I didn’t care. My looks would never change the every-day stupidity.
When I was a kid my parents died and that made my brother Sesshomaru the guardian. He was never home though… always out with his girlfriend Rin. I didn’t have anything against her. The girl was as sweet as sugar. But she was kind of an airhead….
Sleep was something that never came easily for me, so I often went on long walks in the early morning hours. Usually I’d go through the park and down some back allies to get home. But it wasn’t until summer that I started noticing her.
She had black hair that fell past her shoulders and distant brown eyes. Every night, no matter what time I went out, she was on that same swing in that same place, looking down and pushing herself gently. She never looked up. She never noticed me standing there and watching her for some kind of movement other than the swaying swing.
So I decided to talk to her one day.
It was night, as usual, and she was sitting on that same swing again. I started to approach her and for once she looked up. Her eyes held a great sadness but it was quickly replaced by confusion. She smiled bitterly. “Shouldn’t you be home sleeping?” She asked me.
“Shouldn’t you?” I asked right back.
Her name was Kagome Higurashi. She lived in the city but went to a different school. There was something about her that made me open up more than usual, and for the first time in my life I had an intelligent conversation.
Kagome and I started meeting at the swing set every night. We’d talk about things, then sit in silence, then talk about more things. I liked being in her company… but there was still that sadness in her eyes that as the nights went by I found a growing desire to take away. It wasn’t until the first night of the third week that she finally spilled her story.
Kagome’s step-father was Naraku, leader of the biggest mafia in the city. She despised him with a passion because he was always letting his thugs have their way with her. One of them, named Koga, even claimed her as “his” and constantly tried to win her over. She told me that she came to the park every night to hide, hoping they would never find her. Her story ended with her in tears.
I found myself comforting her. She was such a nice girl and didn’t deserve the life she was living. That night I vowed to protect her with everything I had.
But as the summer dragged on, she began to worry about me. She said if anyone ever caught us together I might get hurt, or worse. “I don’t care.” I said. “There’s no way I’ll turn you over to them….”
Then one night I realized that I had fallen in love with her. It hit me hard because I had never been in love before, so I had come to think that I was incapable of it. But sitting next to her on the swings that night opened my eyes…. She looked at me, like she was able to sense what had just taken place in me, and I took the opportunity to kiss her. Boy, did it feel good…. The coldness in her eyes and in her hands disappeared that night. From then on the sadness was gone and we were both at peace.
I had never felt so content. So… dare I say it… happy…. Kagome became my world. Nothing else mattered but going to the park every night to see her….
“Inuyasha….”
It didn’t last.
“I love you, Inuyasha….”
One particularly cold night I found that she wasn’t at the swing set. This worried me immediately since she was always there. I knew she couldn’t have been late.
So I went out looking for her. But where to start? It was night and the city of Tokyo couldn’t have been bigger! As if things couldn’t get any worse, it began to rain. I trudged through the dark streets of the city searching like a lost puppy, then thought of returning to the park to see if she was there.
That’s when I heard it.
Footsteps. Fast footsteps…. Someone was running towards me. I turned and saw Kagome, her beautiful eyes filled with fear. She was limping. There was a gunshot wound in her leg. “Inuyasha!” She cried.
A loud crack filled the air. Kagome let out a soft strangled cry but continued running blindly towards me. I caught her just as she fell forward and saw the fresh new gunshot wound in her back. “Kagome….”
“Let go of her now.”
I looked up to see a guy probably around my age, holding the gun that had shot my Kagome in his hand. “Let go of my woman.”
Those words filled me with rage. “Your woman? Since when has she ever wanted to be with you?”
“So, you must be the mutt she’s been seeing.” The guy lifted the gun and aimed at me. “You just signed your death certificate.”
I picked Kagome up and started to run. I had to get her to a hospital fast… she was becoming very pale. Before I rounded a corner, I felt a surge of pain in my leg. I had been shot. But I didn’t stop running. I couldn’t. Kagome’s life depended on me. The pain of the wound had slowed me down and I got shot again, in the side this time. My legs were beginning to fail so I found a safe place to hide and slumped against the wall.
Kagome stirred in my arms. She looked up at me with tear filled eyes. “Inuyasha…. I’m scared….” She whispered.
“Don’t be.” I said. “You’ll be okay.”
She was in a lot of pain, I could tell. “Inuyasha… promise me you won’t leave me… that you’ll never let go….”
I could feel tears filling my own eyes. “I won’t…. I love you Kagome.” I whispered.
“I love you too, Inuyasha….” She closed her eyes and two minutes later, died in my arms. A choked sob escaped my throat as I held her closer to me. She was gone…. The only one I had ever loved was gone…. I had failed. My tears mixed in with the rain and fell onto her pale cheeks.
Then I heard footsteps. I didn’t move. Then next thing I felt was a gun pressed against my temple. “Game over, mutt.”
“9-1-1.”
“Yes, I heard some gunshots outside in the alley and I’ve just found the body of two teenagers.”
“Don’t worry. The police are on their way.”
“It’s the saddest thing….”
“Pardon?”
“He must’ve loved her an awful lot if he still hasn’t let her go….”
