Chapter 2

Forbidden Memories and a Mission

Kat traces a finger across the cold, fog-covered window next to her. It's raining heavily outside, with occasional lightning. It's been raining for two weeks now, and there is no end in sight at the moment. Though it's only been light rain, with occasional thunderstorms, the rain is getting annoying. It's been nearly six months since she had met Hiei, Kurama, Yusuke, and Kuwabara face-to-face.

Koenma had asked her if she could possibly help the boys out on a few missions, saying that he could ask their father to consider putting her back in charge of the heavens and that helping with the missions might win some favor. She had said straight-up that he was bribing her but that she'd help the boys.

She sighs and notices that she had drawn the attention of Hiei and Kurama. Hiei is sitting in the window on the wall next to this one and Kurama is sitting on the couch talking with Yusuke and Kuwabara. The guys had taken shelter in her house about a week ago and have decided to stay here, without her permission, until the rain stops.

She continues to stare out the window at the rain. She has always loved the rain for some strange reason unknown to her. She also enjoys a decent snow storm, which gives her an excuse to curl up next to a fireplace with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate. Sometimes, like now, she wishes for her emotions to be returned. But she would never admit that to anyone.

Yusuke looks over at her. "Hey, Kat, do you have any cigarettes?" he calls over to her.

"Kitchen, second drawer left of the fridge. There's a couple lighters in there too. But take it to the back porch. No smoking in the house or else," she says smoothly.

She had lightened up around the guys enough to break the emotionless voice. They're pretty good guys when you get to know them, even Kuwabara. Though she'd never admit that either. She had helped Kuwabara and Yusuke with their school work in the last few months of school and managed to help them pass their classes with B's on the final report cards. She had a good laugh at the looks on the teachers' faces when Yusuke and Kuwabara started doing great on their school work and actually attending school everyday!

He nods and heads into the kitchen. Kat stands up from her seat on the windowsill and moves to sit in the leather recliner. There were a few rules Kat had made to allow them to stay at her place, and one of them was to not even touch the recliner or suffer severe punishment. This is her chair, and hers only. She grabs the remote from the coffee table and flips on the TV.

"Junk, junk, junk, weather, junk, news, more junk," she mutters under her breath as she flips through the channels. Hiei watches her, a small amount of amusement in his eyes, but she pretends not to notice. "Commercial channel, junk, junk, junk. Ooh! Animal Planet!" she says, finally finding the damn channel she spent a week looking for. "Hm, 'That's My Baby'? Yuck!" she growls, and quickly starts flipping the channels again. "Latin, news, junk, Spanish, junk, country music, junk, junk, building channel, junk, golf, medical channel, junk, cartoons, junk. Food Channel? Sounds interesting," she says.

Kurama looks at her. "Why Food Channel?" he asks, surprised by her choice.

"Dunno. Seems fun," she says, shrugging. "Might learn something 'bout cooking." About ten minutes later, she picks up the remote again. "Stupid channel's making me hungry," she grumbles and starts flipping channels again. Four minutes of flipping channels later (she has three satellite companies hooked to her house and has about two thousand channels (literally)) she tosses the remote to Kurama. "You find something, I'm heading upstairs," she says to the surprised fox demon.

She heads upstairs and goes into her room, closing the door behind her. She only has three total bedrooms in her house, and only two of them are large enough to have two beds: hers and the master bedroom (she doesn't like the master bedroom for some strange reason). Well, she would have four bedrooms but she turned the second largest bedroom into a study. So, she shares her room with Hiei and Yusuke and Kuwabara share the other large room. Kurama took the room for one. She grabs a book from the bookcase and sits in the windowsill and starts to read the book, the lava lamp on her nightstand the only light in the room outside of the lightning outside.

About twenty minutes later, the door opens and Hiei comes in. He notices she's only using the lava lamp to read. "You're gonna hurt your eyes if you keep that up," he says.

"Gee, I didn't know you cared," she says sarcastically.

"I don't," he says, turning to his bed.

Kat rolls her eyes at him and goes back to her book. She notes out of the corner of her eyes that he has removed his shirt and has laid down on his bed. She finishes up the chapter she's reading and also readies for bed. She doesn't care that Hiei's there or not, as she just changes out of her jeans and t-shirt and into a nightgown.

Hiei's POV

'Baka onna,' I think, watching out of the corner of my eyes as she changes into her nightclothes. Apparently she doesn't care who sees her change or not, as she's done this the entire week I've slept in her room. I successfully fight off my demon urges for the seventh time in the same number of days. But each time, it gets harder not to listen to them.

She looks at me and smirks. "Night, Hiei," she says, her voice holding amusement. I growl at her in return as she lies down on her bed. In seconds, she's fast asleep. Baka onna.

Kat's POV

Kat's Dream

I am running. The forest is a blur around me as I run. I have to help him. Kuromori, my only love in life. I know he's up ahead. He had called for my help, and I have to help him. I soon make it to the clearing and see him. There's an arrow going through his heart and lots of blood on the ground around him. I gasp and run towards him. I drop onto my knees and slide a few feet to be by his side.

"Kuro!" I whimper, afraid that I'm too late. I sigh in relief as he turns his head towards me slightly.

"Kat," he whispers, reaching a hand towards me. "Kat, koishii. I knew you'd come." He's about to say more, but starts coughing. Blood spills from his mouth as he coughs.

"Don't talk, Kuro," I whisper, moving so that his head is in my lap. "Kuro, please, you can't die." Tears start flowing down my cheeks. "W-we promised to be together forever. Please, Kuro, don't leave me!"

"S-sorry, Kat," he says softly, his ruby-colored eyes slowly closing. His long, black hair is slick and sticky with blood. His black fox ears flick slightly as my tears land on them. "I p-promise to return in another life and I-I'll look f-for you. I l-love you, Kat."

His eyes close completely, and I bow my head. My beloved shadow fox is dead. I close my eyes and tilt my head back. My own fox ears and cat tail appear. I let out a long, lonely howl, bidding goodbye to my beloved until we meet again in his next life.

Out of dream

Normal POV

Hiei watches silently as the fallen angel twists and turns in her sleep. He figures she's having a nightmare, as there are tears going down her cheeks and she keeps whispering "No, don't."

Suddenly, the dark-haired girl snaps into a sitting position, panting heavily and covered in sweat. She looks at him with turquoise eyes that are widened, probably because of her dream. "What time is it?" she asks softly.

"About three," he says, shrugging. "Bad dream?"

"Yeah," she replies, lying back on her bed. 'I haven't had that one in years,' she thinks to herself, not realizing that a certain fire demon is 'eavesdropping' on her thoughts. 'I can't believe that it happened again. It's been nearly two hundred and fifty years since he died. Dammit, Kat, he'd hate to see you like this. Get a hold of yourself. Damn you, Kuromori Misuto! You had to go and get yourself killed, didn't you!' she thinks. She sighs. 'I shouldn't blame him. It's not his fault that the stupid bounty hunter got him.'

Hiei is lying on his bed, facing the wall and his main eyes closed. But his Jagan eye is open and he's watching her thoughts. 'Kuromori Misuto, huh? I think I've heard of him,' he thinks to himself. 'I'll talk to the fox about it later. He should know.'

Around two that afternoon

The rain had finally cleared up, and the sky was clear of clouds. Kat had let out an almost-happy yell and all but shoved the boys out of her house so that she can clean it up. Yusuke and Kuwabara had headed for the arcade. Kurama and Hiei didn't have anything to do or anyone to see, so they stayed near her house to watch her. The two are talking telepathically.

'Fox, have you heard of a person by the name of Kuromori Misuto?' Hiei asks.

Kurama looks at him, startled. 'Where did you hear of him, Hiei?' the fox demon asks.

'The onna was muttering the name in her sleep. I take it you do know of him.'

Kurama sighs and nods. 'Yes. He was a very powerful shadow fox and a surprisingly stealthy thief. His real name was Akil Uvadi. But he had been born in a light fox clan and was shunned. He left and took the name Kuromori Misuto so that he could get rid of the memories of his birth clan. Legends say that he fell in love with a maiden from the heavens and that she had fled the skies to be with him,' Kurama says. 'By what you're telling me, Kat may just be the maiden that was said to have been in love with Kuromori.'

Hiei nods. He is getting a feeling of jealousy, though why he'd be jealous of this Kuromori, he doesn't know. 'Anything else?' he asks.

Kurama thinks about it for a few moments. 'Kuromori died nearly two hundred and fifty years ago, after promising the maiden that he'll reincarnate himself and find her again. That's all that I know about him,' the fox says with a rueful smile.

A sharp rap on the window behind them startles the two demons out of their conversation. They turn to see Kat motioning for them to come inside. They head in, Hiei rolling his eyes just before he enters the door. "I need you two to help me move and clean the damn furniture, seeing as Yusuke and Kuwabara are no where to be found," she says, smirking at the stunned looks on their faces. "Come on, the furniture can't move or clean itself, y'know. The sooner we get started, the sooner it gets done."

Four hours later

After a loud yelling match between Kat and Hiei, and several smaller yelling matches between the two in the process of cleaning, Kat gets the two demons to help her clean the furniture and rearrange the rather large living room, the den, and the basement game room. Now, Kat and Hiei are arguing about whether or not to rearrange the three bedrooms and the study. Kurama had fled to the safety of Kat's garden about twenty minutes earlier when they started the argument.

"Yes! It's about time to rearrange the bedrooms!" Kat yells.

"No! I'm not doing it!" Hiei yells back.

"Yes you are! It's not like I'm not gonna help rearrange the rooms!" she yells back.

"And! I've already done three other rooms! I'm not gonna do four more!" he growls.

Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Kurama choose that moment to enter the living room, which is housing the current argument. "Um, did we come at a bad time?" Yusuke asks, noticing the friction in their glares at each other.

Kat turns to them. "No, not at all! You three came at the perfect time to help me finish up the housework!" she says, smirking at the priceless looks on their faces.

Suddenly, a beeping sound comes from Kat's pocket. She scowls and pulls out a black communication mirror, similar to Yusuke's. Koenma had given it to her when she had agreed to help the boys on their missions. "Yeah?" she growls.

"Sorry, did I call at a bad time?" Koenma asks, shrinking back slightly from the look in her eyes.

"Yeah, you did. I was getting the guys to help me with cleaning the house. Now what is it!" she growls. Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Hiei are all silently thanking the toddler for choosing that minute to call. Though not one of them would ever admit to it.

"I've got a new mission for you five. I'd like you all to go undercover in a massive thief-and-assassin ring in the demon world and try to figure out where their next few major targets are, and maybe find out who the overlords of the ring are," he says.

At the term 'thief', Kat gets a look in her eye that none of the guys, not even Koenma or Hiei, like. "Do we get to go on some of smaller raids?" she asks, her voice overflowing with excitement.

"Yes, you all have to, so that they think that they can trust you," Koenma says.

"I'm in," Kat says, surprising everyone. On every single one of the last five missions since she joined up, she had gone along grudgingly. The other four detectives give their agreement and Koenma tells them a few of the usual hangouts for the demons in the ring.

Well, that's all for chapter two. I didn't make it as long as I'd have liked to, but it's better than I expected. I hadn't originally intended to put a mission in this chapter, but I got the idea for it and decided to put it in anyways. I hope everyone enjoys, and I'm still very sorry for taking so long to update! I'm off to work on chapter 3! (runs off to write the next chapter)
