Well, we left off at an interesting point last chapter. I could only hope that it gets better. This chapter, Neko will be telling Hiei the story of her past. It's rather sad, as I already have it planned out. So, disclaimer and then the story.
Arina: DG doesn't own YYH. She dreams a lot about YYH, though. Very … interesting … dreams.
DG: let me tell you about last night's dream, Arina! (Starts telling about the odd dream she had last night)
-Review responses-
Living water: (blink, blink) my first two reviews on this story. Wow. Good job! And glad you like!
Angelinahieiscuz: thanks!
HieiFan666: hey, do you know that your one of my favorite authors? I'm honored to be receiving such praise from such a good author as you!
Icy AngelWings: (blinks a lot) wow … such praise … I'm totally unworthy! Silver eyes? Oh! You mean Satsu. He's a bastard, that's for sure. If you read the note on his name, you'd know why he's dark and creepy. It's at the bottom of the –Odd info- section of chapter two, if you want to know. He's murdered thousands of people for no reason at all, and kidnapped hundreds of children from their homes. You'll learn a lot about Neko's past in this chapter!
Shadowtiger11: (blink, blink) were you high on sugar? And I do my best on all my fics. But I've lost a few of them because a stupid CD decided to erase them before I could copy them to my computer. Stupid CDs. I think the hollow smile thing was interesting as well.
Oscar: I'm beginning to think that you enjoy my fics as much as I enjoy writing them. You've reviewed most of my stories. And thanks!
Thanks for positive reviews everyone!

Chapter 3
A Sad Tale
-Last time-
"Well, it started years ago…," she says, starting the most interesting story that Hiei has yet to uncover.
-Now-
"Both my parents had recessive demon traits. My dad from his full blood demon father, and my mom from her full blood demon mother. They never expected me to turn out to be a demon," Neko says. This startles Hiei. He had never heard of someone having recessive demon traits. "The signs started just after my third birthday."
-Neko's Memory-
A small three-year-old girl runs up to her mother. "Mama, mama! I got a tail!" she says, twirling around to show her mother a long, graceful black fox tail. She doesn't see her mother's face pale dramatically. Her dark-haired father walks in and sees the tail. He looks up at his wife and they exchange worried glances. "Papa!" the child says happily when she says him. "Do you like my tail, papa?"
"It's a … lovely tail, Sakeme," he says, crouching down beside the small girl. He ruffles her dark hair, making the little girl laugh. "Run along and play, mama and I have some adult stuff to talk about. You will be bored."
"Kay!" Sakeme says, smiling. She runs back upstairs where she had been playing, her black tail twitching in happiness. But instead of returning to her games, she listens in quietly to her parents' conversation, knowing somehow it wouldn't be boring.
"What are we going to do, Nicholas?" her mother asks, worry evident in her voice.
"I don't know, Nicky," he says, frowning. "We can't tell her that she's a demon. She'll start asking questions we can't rightfully answer. Did you see her ears?"
"Yes," Nicky says softly. "Mother may have been right."
Sakeme reaches a hand up to feel her ears. Instead of normal human ears, she feels kawaii cat ears. She smiles slightly. She loves animals, and had always wanted to know what being an animal was like. But she frowns when she realizes what her father had said. She is very smart for a three-year-old. Actually, she has been told that she has the mind of a ten or twelve year old. She's read many books about all sorts of mythical creatures. Demons were her favorite topic of study. But demons were supposed to come from other demons. Not humans, or, as demons called them, ningens. She turns her attention back to her parents' discussion.
"What do we tell her to explain why she has animal features?" her dad is saying.
"We should tell her the truth," her mom says. "Then we take her to our parents to see if they can help her hide her traits. At least for the moment."
-Two years later-
A seemingly normal five-year-old girl is playing at the playground across from her house. A tall man with silver eyes walks up and watches as the girl's seemingly endless supply of energy has her playing freeze tag with other children. She's It, and she has only one more person to tag for someone else to be It. Suddenly, a bully of about seven or eight trips her as she passes him.
"Not fair!" she says, looking up at the bully who is standing over her.
The bully just smirks as she gets up. He pushes her into a mud puddle, ruining her new black jeans. "Yeah, what ya gonna do about it?" he taunts.
Then the bully is startled, as the girl grows a fox tail and cat ears. "Leave me alone!" she cries, getting up again.
The bully backs away from the girl. "You're a freak!" he yells. "Stay away from me!"
The other kids are very startled to see the little girl grow animal parts. They all back away from the girl, except for a small boy with such bright blonde hair that it is almost white. He also has bright blue eyes and looks to be about six or seven. He walks up to her and helps her stand, not caring about her strange parts. "You okay, Sakeme?" he asks, trying to comfort the crying girl.
"Y-yeah," she sniffles. She looks up at the older boy. "Why are you helping me, Hinote?"
"Cause I'm your friend, and that's what friends do," he says. "Plus, I'm a demon too," he adds softly.
"Really? What kind?" she asks.
He smiles proudly. "Fire fox," he says happily.
"Wow. I think I'm a cat and fox mix," she said, awe in her voice at his openness.
"How about I call you Neko?" he asks.
"Huh? Why?" she asks.
"You're as curious as a cat, and Neko is Japanese for cat," he explains.
"Oh. I forgot you were from Japan," she says, smiling. "You speak such purr-fect English," she says, intentionally adding the purring affect. Hinote shivers slightly. "Okay, you can call me Neko. Can I call you Kitsune?"
Hinote is startled. 'Where had she learned that?' he thinks, nodding with a smile
That was how she got the nickname from someone she was very close to. But that wouldn't last for very long.
-About three years later-
An eight-year-old girl is playing with her dear friend, having more fun than anyone would imagine. The girl was a loner at school, as the other kids had found out about her demonic features from others who had seen them. The only person who ever even got close to her was her dear friend, Hinote Hishimora. Or better known to her as Kitsune. The pair do not notice that her sad parents are watching their antics through the living room window. To them, they were the only ones in existence. Then a tall silver-eyed man walks up. The parents are startled. They know the man as Satsu the Murderer, Satsu the Destroyer, Satsu the Child Stealer. And his harsh silver eyes are dead set on their daughter and her friend.
The two kids look up at the tall man. Kitsune steps in front of Neko, noticing the powerful evil aura coming from the man. "Ah, hello there children," he says, smiling a twisted, evil smile. "Are you two Hinote Hishimora and Sakeme Kiverin?"
"Who wants to know?" Kitsune asks, frowning. 'How does he know our names?' he wonders.
"Someone who is very intrigued by their special powers," the man says
Neko tugs gently on Kitsune's sleeve. "What powers?" she asks softly, hoping that the man doesn't hear her. Kitsune shrugs, just as confused as his friend.
Suddenly, before either of them realize it, the man had grabbed them both and took them away from their home, never to see their family again.
-Five years later-
A thirteen-year-old girl and fourteen-year-old boy are holding hands as they run quickly through the dark forest on the castle grounds. They had been brought here five years ago and have finally attempted an escape. "Come on, Neko," the blond haired boy says, as Neko stumbles blindly over the roots of the trees around them.
"I'm coming, Kitsune," she says. They had completely forgotten their last names. They only knew their nicknames for each other and their first names. Suddenly, the sound of wolf howls echoes through the forest. "I'm scared, Kitsune," Neko says, running into a small stream after her friend. She knows that water masks the scent of a person if they run through it. They run downstream for several hours. By the time evening falls, they have gotten through the walls of the castle and are free. They continue running downstream hours into the night.
"Shh," Kitsune says very softly, holding a hand in front of the girl. "Get down and go fox."
They lie down in the water and change into their fox forms. Kitsune becomes a small red fox, and Neko becomes a slightly smaller black fox with a thin silvery-white streak running from the left eye, over the head, to the neck. And they run again, their scents altered by the water and change of forms. Neko knew she would follow Kitsune to the ends of all three worlds, and he would her. They were closer than siblings, but not in the mating way. It was more like the closest of friends. They had known each other since they had started kindergarten together. She had been a lonely four-year-old and he had been a kind-hearted five-year-old. They became instant friends. And their bond had grown even closer with each passing year.
Suddenly, a dagger somehow hits Kitsune in the side. He falls. Neko yips at him, trying to get him to answer her. But to her horror, he turns back to his human form. But, wait. That's not his human form! He doesn't have a fox tail and fox ears in human form, and he definitely doesn't have red hair. She blinks as she realizes what he did. He had changed to his demon form! She had never once seen his demon form.
She watches as the fire kitsune pulls the dagger out of his side and tosses it aside, not even wincing as a trickle of blood makes its way out of the wound. He turns to the startled vixen and nods at her, telling her that he's fine. She gingerly walks toward the tall kitsune. She gently licks the blood away from his wound. He is startled when she first does it, but then realizes that she's trying to ease the flow of blood. She looks up at him with trusting bright green eyes and nods. She walks backwards very awkwardly to get away from where an apparent fight would happen. She watches as Kitsune holds a flame in his hand. She blinks. How did that get there?
Suddenly, a shadow separated itself from the darkness and steps forward. The shadow walks toward them, but keeps its head and shoulders out of site in the darkness. But she can see orange eyes glowing slightly in the darkness where the head should be. The demon has a white and black striped tiger's tail and has white and black striped fur running up and down its body. The apparent tiger demon is wearing a black fighter's outfit. It gets in an offensive position. Kitsune watches the tiger demon warily.
"Stand down," a dark voice says. Neko and Kitsune freeze. They know that voice. Neko turns to see another shadow step from beneath the trees. The tiger demon steps away from the foxes. Satsu steps forward toward the foxes. "You've been disobedient. Time for you to pay." With that, Satsu attacked Kitsune.
While Kitsune is struggling to get Satsu off, Neko leaps at the evil fox demon and leaves three deep scratches beneath his right eye. Satsu growls and tries to attack the half-breed with shadow magic. Kitsune gets in the way and collapses on Neko. Neko whimpers, afraid that her friend is dead. Then Kitsune rolls off of her and smiles weakly at her. "Take this, Neko," he says, handing her a necklace. The necklace chain is gold and is attached to a large black stone that seems to glow a dark blue. He puts the necklace around her neck. "Don't lose it, Neko. I'm trusting you." She nods and whimpers, trying to understand what Kitsune is talking about. "Go to the Ningenkai. Go to Japan. I'll try to find you when I can. I promise, Neko! I promise I'll find you!"
He pushes her through a portal that he had created, and before she can't see him anymore, he waves a sad goodbye. She yips slightly.
-End of Neko's memory-
"That's the last time I saw him," Neko whispers, looking out the window as the sun starts to rise. She fingers a gold chain around her neck. Hiei sits in thought, watching the sad girl before him. "I still haven't figured out why he wanted me to keep the stone. Maybe Satsu had killed him. I don't know."
That seemed like a good place to stop. Wow. Eight pages, most of which were memories of Neko's. I'm getting better at memory scenes. I hope my reviewers enjoyed! Ja ne!
