A/N: Give me a break in the reviews people- this is my first official Kingdom Hospital fic. It's a crossover with the movies "The Grudge" and "Darkness". They may include some more movies if I get around to seeing them. This doesn't really have any specific time during the series. Enjoy!
Mary stood on the roof of the elevator, doll in arm, as she listened to the conversation going on beneath her in the elevator. Dr. James (I don't know if that's Hook's real name, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) Hook and Dr. Chris Draper were discussing some new patients to the hospital that had arrived from somewhere pretty far away. China or Japan, somewhere along those lines. From what Mary could tell, the woman they had brought in had snapped after setting fire to a house. Now they were transferring her here for some professional help.
The way Dr. Draper was describing the woman, Karen, reminded Mary something of Mona's symptoms; Non-responsive when spoken to, would make unusual noises at unexpected times, and would have violent outbursts, flailing her arms around and screaming at the top of her lungs until her voice went hoarse.
And Mary had thought that Dr. Gottreich had found a new patient for the pain room. Then again, Antubis would have put a stop to it all if that had been the case. He knew that it made Mary grit her teeth to hear victims in the pain room. It was a painful reminder of her own death at the hands of a Gottreich so many years ago.
The conversation came to an abrupt stop at the same time as the elevator, and the two doctors stepped out. Mary paused, but then decided to follow them. Paul hadn't been around for a few days, and Mary intended on taking advantage of it. She followed the two down the hall, not even batting an eye at the sign that read: PSYCH WARD, and calmly followed them into a room.
A young woman, maybe in her early twenties was lying down flat on the bed, her eyes opened as wide as they could go. She was staring off into space, completely unaware of the two strangers that had just entered her room. Mary walked up next to the woman's bed, and studied the cuts and bruises on her face and arms. This was Karen.
"Hello Karen," Hook said, stepping up next to Karen's bed and unintentionally standing right next to Mary. "I'm Dr. Hook, and this is Dr. Draper." There was no response; Karen just kept staring at the wall ahead of her. She gave no acknowledgment to the two Doctors or the little ghost girl.
"Karen," Chris said. "We were hoping that during your stay here you could provide us with some answers as to your current condition." It was obvious that Chris wasn't expecting an answer, so she gave Hook a little nod and left the room. Hook sighed and absently checked Karen's vitals. Suddenly, Karen made a noise like a whimper.
Hook looked over and narrowed his eyes. "Karen?" He asked. "Are you all right?" Karen raised her hand and pointed to the spot she had been staring at moments ago. Hook didn't see anything; the fact that he was alive limited his sight from many things. Including the little boy that stood at the end of the room.
He was of Japanese heritage, and wore a white and blue T-shirt with dark blue shorts. There was also the small note that his skin had a bluish tint to it. Mary looked at him with unmasked curiosity on her face. She stepped away from Karen's bedside as the young woman began to make even more strained noises.
"Hi," Mary said. "What's your name?" The little boy turned, his dark eyes focusing on Mary. He didn't respond. Mary was beginning to feel a little unnerved about the boy. He was clearly a ghost, but not a very social one. Mary tried again. "My name's Mary. What's yours?" She asked. The boy blinked, the stern and dark expression on his face never wavering.
"Toshio." He dragged out. His voice was in a low and angry sounding monotone. Mary took the tone of Toshio's voice as a warning and slowly backed up a few steps. He appeared to be glaring at her, and even though Mary had seen scarier things, this was seriously freaking her out.
Suddenly, the lights in the room flickered. Karen looked terrified, and she began to rock back and forth while whimpering on her bed. Hook had a hand on her shoulder and was trying to calm her down. "Karen," He said, "What's going on? Are you okay?" Without warning, Karen shrieked. Hook couldn't see or even guess why, but Mary certainly could. The little girl had backed up to the end of Karen's bed, clutching her doll in an iron grip.
Another ghost had joined Toshio. A young Japanese woman in a torn, dirty and bloodstained sweater and ripped up red skirt. Her face was an even darker shade of blue than Toshio's, and her eyes were wide and dark. She was down on her stomach as though she had been crawling, and instead of speaking, she made little groaning and strangled noises. Mary was frozen with fear at the sight of the new ghost.
"A-A-Ant-t-t-b-bis!" She stuttered. "A-Antubis! Antubis! Help!" Mary almost choked on her words from fear. She was dead frightened of the two ghosts that stood before her. They gave off of an unusually strong sense of grief and pure fury. Not a good combination. Just as things were getting ugly, they got worse when Mary heard someone say:
"Did I hear a certain brat named Mary in here?" As Paul, the biggest known creep in the hospital (With, of course, the exception of Stegman) stepped through the wall with an annoying smirk that promised complete and utter torment for Mary when he caught her. He barely even glanced at the two ghosts that stood less than fifteen feet away from him, grinning one of those terribly demented grins at Mary.
Mary groaned and closed her eyes. "Please Paul," She begged. "Not now. Any other time but now." Paul smirked and stepped closer to her.
"Why not Mary? It's not like you have anything better to do." Mary sighed and pointed to Toshio and the other woman. Paul cocked an eyebrow at the two, and then turned back to Mary. "You made some new friends. You've known me long enough to know that I really don't care." Mary shook her head, and moved away from the bed as the ghost woman began to crawl towards it.
Paul didn't seem concerned in the least bit. He just leaned against the wall and watched as the ghost crawled even closer to Karen. Hook was trying to calm the young woman down as she shrieked and screamed with terror. She could see the ghost woman, and was afraid. Mary was torn, uncertain of what to do. An idea hit her, but she was very reluctant to go with it. She knew there was a dominating chance that it wouldn't happen, but she reluctantly turned to face Paul.
"Paul, please, help her." Mary pleaded. Paul laughed.
"Why in the world would I want to do that? This is funny." He said, clearly amused by Karen's screams. Just then, Dr. Lona Massingale entered.
"Hook- What in the world is going on in here? It sounds like someone's being murdered!" She said. Hook was fighting to keep Karen in one place as she struggled to get away from the ghost that was now a foot or so away from the bed. While Lona went to assist Hook in keeping Karen in bed, Mary once again began to plead with the older ghost.
"Paul!" She yelled as the ghost gripped the end of the bed and Karen's cries intensified. "Please!" Paul sighed and rolled his eyes.
"Fine. But you'd better find a hiding place for that doll for later- a good one too." He warned. He strode over to the bed and grabbed the ghost woman by the shoulder. There was a sudden bang and Paul was thrown backwards, slamming into the wall with a bone-shattering force. Toshio didn't even glance at the older boy when he hit the wall.
Mary didn't like Paul to the point where she almost hated him, but she didn't want to see him get really hurt or even destroyed. Even if he was a two-faced jerk who got his kicks from tormenting everyone. She knelt down next to him and wordlessly questioned if he was all right. Paul pushed himself up into a sitting position and tried to take in a breath. He really had the wind knocked out of him.
Mary looked up to see where the ghost was, and she went paler than she usually was. And that was saying something. The ghost woman was looking right at her and Paul with her dead, unseeing eyes. She clearly wasn't after Karen anymore. She was after the two resident ghosts.
