Point Place High School

"Hyde!" Hyde opened his eyes as Forman's urgent whisper sounded in his ear.
"Hyde wake up!" Hyde didn't want to wake up. He was sitting in history class and Miss Binsey was talking about something he had absolutley no interest in. There were so many things he could be doing right now that were more fun than listening to Miss Binsey. But he needed to pay attention. If he was gonna have any chance of not flunking out of school, he needed to pass history. Ironic, him, Steven Hyde caring about school. There was a time when he wouldn't have given a shit about flunking out of school because he saw himself in prison ten years from now. But after his mom took off with a trucker and the Forman's took him in all that changed. All of a sudden he had people who cared what happened to him, who expected more from him, and that caused him to expect more from himself. But he still didn't like history. It was so boring hearing about a bunch of dead guys and the stuff that they did a million years ago.
"Now," Miss Binsey was saying. "We're going to pair off and each pair will do a presentation on the historical event that they feel had the greatest impact on our country"
"Donna, be my partner?" Hyde heard Eric whisper behind him. Hyde rolled his eyes. Of course Forman would choose Donna for his partner. It didn't matter that Eric was Hyde's best friend and had been since they were three. It didn't matter, because Donna was Forman's girlfriend. If Hyde had a girlfriend he would choose her over Forman in a heartbeat. He didn't have a girlfriend though. He and Jackie had broken up two months ago. The breakup had been completly mutual and they were actually friends now. As much as he could stand to be friends with Jackie without wanting to throttle her.
"Kelso," Fez's voice was heard. "Be my partner?" Fez was choosing Kelso over him? Well, as sad as it was Kelso actually was better in school then he was. Well, this sucked. He just knew he was gonna get stuck partnered with some geek with no friends as a partner. The bell rang ending his suffering but only momentarily.
"Anyone without a partner please remain after class." Pulling on his shades Hyde groaned as he glanced around to see who else was remaining. To his surprise, the only one not leaving was a girl sitting three rows away from him. Hyde had never noticed her before, but then he was usually asleep during class. She was about Donna's height, with long brown hair that hung straight down her back. She wore jeans, white sneakers, and a long sleeve blue blouse, which was kind of strange since it was about 90 degrees. As everyone else left the room she turned and looked at him. Hyde felt his heart drop into his stomach. She was freaking gorgeous! She looked like Audrey Hepburn in that stupid Roman Holiday movie that Jackie had made him watch when they were going out. He'd thought the movie was crap but Audrey Hepburn was HOT! She smiled shyly at him, and Hyde knew he was in love. Maybe this project wouldn't be so bad after all.

5:15 pm The Hub

"Stefanie Russell?" Forman asked him as they sat around the Hub.
"Yeah"
"Man," Kelso said, "She is freaking HOT"
"Yes, she is," Hyde said. "But how is she in history? I need a good grade on this thing or I'm gonna flunk"
"She must be pretty good," Forman said. "She's been on the honor roll since she moved to Point Place"
"Hey everyone," the high pitched voice of Jackie joined them.
"Hey Jackie," Hyde said, "you're a gossip. What do you know about Stefanie Russell"
"Hmmm," Jackie said. "Well she moved here like a year ago. It's just her and her dad, her mom's gone. She's like a super good student, all A's. Her dad's some kind of business man. That's all I know really. She's kind of a loner"
"Oooh," Donna said, "a loner"
"Yeah," Kelso said, "You know what they say about loners." Everyone stared blankly at Kelso.
"They're alone alot," Kelso said trying to sound smart and failing miserably.
"Why are you asking me this?" Jackie said. "Are you thinking of asking her out"
"No," Hyde said a little too quickly.
"Hyde answered very quickly," Fez said. "That means he's lying." Hyde reached over and punched Fez in the arm.
"Hyde's partners with her for our history project," Donna explained.
"Oh, well you'll definitely get a good grade," Jackie said. "Maybe if you're lucky she'll do the whole thing herself." Behind his shades Hyde rolled his eyes.
"Speaking of which Eric," Donna said. "We should talk about what we're gonna do. I was thinking maybe Pearl Harbor"
"How did Pearl Harbor change America?" Fez asked.
"Fez," Donna said in shock, "The attack on Pearl Harbor changed America in a huge way. Millions of Americans who didn't want anything to do with the war were suddenly enlisting. It spurred patriotism"
"Yeah, then those patriots turned firehoses on young people protesting Vietnam," Eric said.
"Thus beginning the generational gap that still exists between young liberationalist and"
"People like my dad," Eric finished for her.
"Exactly!" Donna said. All at the table turned to stare at her.
"So basically," Eric said, "you want to do our senior project on why my dad's a tightass...Sounds great"
"Great, so we'll hit the library tomorrow after school"
"Yeah I guess"
"Kelso we should also hit the library," Fez said.
"Um Fez, I really don't think you guys are gonna find a lot of sources on the invention of the balloon"
"Yeah," Donna said. "How exactly did that change America"
"WH...wh...wh..."Kelso stuttered.
"Donna," Fez said sensibly, "those who have grown up having balloons could not understand"
"Yeah!" Kelso said. "C'mon Fez, we've got research to do." "Ya know between the two of them, they've got about half of a brain." Everyone chuckled.
"Steven?" All turned at the shy voice that came from the girl standing behind them.
"Hey Stefanie," Hyde said giving her a smile. "Wanna sit down?" Stefanie sat down and looked around her shyly. "Hi, I'm Donna," Donna said holding out her hand.
"Yeah I know," Stefanie said. "We have gym together. You're the best basketball player in the class"
"Yeah," Hyde said. "She got really good beating Forman"
"Sad but true," Eric said. "Eric Forman, major loser." Stefanie smiled at Forman and Hyde couldn't help feeling slightly jealous.
"Jackie Burkhardt," Jackie said, "Cheerleader. You've probably seen me at all the football games on the top of the pyramid"
"Oh, I don't go to football games," Stefanie said. 'I'm in love,' thought Hyde.
"Oh," Jackie said.
"Oh, I'm not anti-football or anything. I just work on Friday nights"
"Where do you work?" Donna said.
"I'm a waitress at Abe's Diner"
"Yeah I've been there," Eric said. "Abe's a scary man"
"Yeah," Stefanie said.
"LIsten, I gotta get going," Donna said. "Eric can you take me home"
"Yeah sure," Eric said. Hyde wasn't fooled. Forman was just hoping to get a little makeout action.
"Yeah, I need to go too," Jackie said.
"Nice meeting you all," Stefanie said. After they'd all gone and he was alone with her, Hyde found himself unable to say anything. "Talk to her you moron!" he yelled at himself.
"So Steven," Stefanie said. "I thought we should talk about the project"
"Okay," Hyde said. "I thought we could do the Boston Tea Party"
"You want to do our senior project on a bunch of guys drinking tea?" Stefanie laughed. It was like music.
"They didn't drink the tea Steven they dumped it into Boston Harbor"
"That makes even less sense to me." Usually at this point in a converstation the person he was talking to would shake their head and call him an idiot. But Stefanie didn't, she just smiled.
"Look, why don't we get together after school tomorrow and I'll explain it to you." Get together. With Stefanie. Oh yes, he could definitely go for that.
"All right. Uh, your place"
"No!" Stefanie said loudly causing him to jump. Her face turned red rapidly.
"Uh, I mean, uh my dad's out of town and he doesn't like it when I have people over when he's not there." "Well, we could go to my place, but I can't imagine that your dad would want you alone in a boy's apartment with no adult supervision"
"You have your own place"
"Yeah." When he'd turned eighteen he'd moved out of the Forman's basement into a one bedroom apartment. It wasn't fancy but he had a kitchen, a bedroom, a living room, and a bathroom. With the money he made at the hotel and occasional support from the Forman's, which was given on the condition that he stay in school, he did okay. "Wow, that's awesome," Stefanie said. "I can't wait to move out of my house and get my own place. So tomorrow about five"
"Cool."
