Chapter 16

It had taken a bit of persuading to get Eric to loan her the Vista Crusier. It had taken even more persuading to get Donna to let her do this alone. But she had to do this. If she and Steven were going to have a life together she had to do this. She needed to be free. Red was right, she deserved to be happy. She pulled the Cruiser up to the police station. With determination she strode into the station and up to the desk.
"Help you miss?" the officer asked. "I'm here to see Wade Russell." She was shown into a room with a table and two folding chairs. She sat down and waited. She sat up straight as a uniformed officer ushered her father into the room. Dressed in prison orange and handcuffs, he wasn't nearly so frightening as she'd previously thought.
"What the fuck do you want?" he asked once he was seated and the officer had left them.
"I'm getting married," she said staring him straight in the eye. "My boyfriend, the one you shot, he's alive. He saw you before you shot him. He's gonna testify in court that you shot him. I'll be telling the judge what you've done to me for the last four years. What you did to Mom for seven years before that"
"You came here to tell me that"
"You know I spent most of my life being angry at Mom, for leaving me. Leaving me to take all your shit because she was too cowardly and weak to take it anymore. I realize now that she wasn't cowardly at all. Leaving you was the bravest thing she ever did. I was never that brave. I just took everything you had to give me. I didn't have the guts to leave, until I met Steven. Steven made me realize that I deserve more than that. I deserve love. You never gave me love once in my entire life. All you did was hurt me, and humiliate me, and make me feel worthless. Well, that's over. I'm moving on to better things. Steven and I are getting married. We're going to college in the fall. I am gonna spend the rest of my life with a man who loves me. He loves me. He was willing to die for me. All my strengths, and my weaknesses, and all my crap, he loves me despite all of that. I'm not afraid of you anymore. You are nothing to me now. I'm leaving you behind. I'm putting you away. Goodbye." With that she stood up and left.

"You're doing good Hyde," Donna said. Hyde groaned as he took another step. Donna had a firm grip on his arm, she was determined not to let him fall. "I'm eighteen years old and I feel like an old man," he grumbled.
"Well you got shot," Donna said. "That's it, just a little further. Almost there. You made it"
"Victory," Hyde said falling back down on the bed.
"Better get him in shape fast," Stefanie said from the door. "He's gotta walk down the aisle at graduation next week"
"There's my fiance," Hyde said holding out a hand to her. "Just wanted to try that out"
"Hey babe," Stefanie said coming over and giving him a kiss. "You look better. When do we get to spring you from this joint"
"Doctor says he can go home in a day or so," Donna said.
"Cool," Stefanie said. "Donna, I need to ask you something"
"Sure," Donna said. Stefanie looked right at Hyde as she spoke.
"Will you be my maid of honor?" Hyde stared at her and grinned. Donna's mouth had dropped open.
"You...you guys are...oh my god"
"You can give me the ring now."

A month later Hyde's apartment.

"Today was amazing," Hyde said as he collapsed on the couch.
"Mm, hm," Stefanie said. Hyde watched her as she removed her cap and gown. "I can't believe I'm a high school graduate," Hyde said staring at his diploma.
"Yup," Stefanie said plopping down next to him. Hyde glanced at her. She'd been acting strange all day. During the party at the Forman's she'd hardly said a word. He would think that she would almost manic. Last week her father had plead guilty to attempted murder and had been sentenced to fifteen years. Three days ago they had celebrated her eighteenth birthday, making her officially an adult and free to do whatever she wanted and today they had graduated from high school. "Are you all right?" he asked her.
"Yeah," she said dreamily. "I was just thinking"
"About what?" "That we should celebrate," she said leaning over and kissing him. She didn't stop with just a kiss though. His lips parted to allow her tongue to explore his mouth. Her hands slipped inside his shirt and her body pressed against him. He pulled away, hesitantly. "Are you sure?" he asked her. She nodded.
"I want you, Steven." He leaned up to kiss her fully on the lips. Then he got up and took her hand leading her slowly to the bedroom. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him as he slowly unzipped the back of her dress. She stepped away and let the black silk pool at her feet. He leaned forward and kissed and nibbled his way down her neck as she unbuttoned his shirt and slid it off his shoulders. She gently pushed him backwards onto the bed and came down straddling his hips. Hyde moaned as she kissed her way down his chest stopping at the top of his pants. She removed his belt and unzipped his jeans. He lifted his hips so she could slide them off followed by his boxers. He sat up and slid his arms around her so unhook her bra. He tossed it aside and stared at her. She had nice breasts that fit his hands perfectly. He pulled her to him and took her right breast into his mouth.
