Yay! My first Crescent Moon fanfic! RR please, because it makes me happy.
Disclaimer: I do not own Mikan no Tsuki. But I think it sounds cool.
"Mitsuru, c'mon!" Akira yelled from a distance. "Hurry up, you're falling behind!"
Damn him, I'll go at my own damn pace! Mitsuru thought angrily to himself. He attempted to give Akira his patented glare, but alas, the werewolf was too far away to receive any effects of said glare.
"Mitsuuuurrrrruuuuuu!" Another voice called cheerily. "C'mon! I wish you'd walk up here with us!" Mahiru waved to Mitsuru, who was a few hundred feet behind her on the nonexistent path. "Besides, you don't wanna get lost in the woods, do you?"
Upon Oboro's request, the Moonshine crew had taken a little 'vacation,' a camping trip into the woods. It was only for one night, but Mahiru and Akira had been overjoyed at the prospect. Akira, Nozomu, and Mitsuru were carrying supplies and a tent each, while Mahiru carried most of the food and other various supplies. Misoka had stayed back at home to help Oboro run the shop. So the four youngest members of the Moonshine's staff were now hiking through wild forest on this fine evening, forging their own way as they went. Of course, this meant that they could easily get lost, since there was no path to follow.
"It'll get dark in about an hour, so we should probably find a place to camp fairly soon. I think we should go… this way!" Nozomu said, pointing in the general direction in which his compass was pointing. "But where is that slowpoke, Mitsuru? We can't have him getting lost on us… and he probably will if he's not up here with us…"
"I'll go get him!" Mahiru volunteered happily. "Mitsuru! Mitsuuuurrruuuuuu!" Mahiru called, running towards him as fast as she could with the load on her back.
Mitsuru sighed. "What do you want?" He asked exasperatedly. Stupid girl, she's always bugging me, she never leaves me alone…
"C'mon! Come walk with the rest of us! It must be so lonely back here!"
"I don't get lonely. Go away."
"Plus we don't want you to get lost," Mahiru giggled.
"I won't get lost, dammit!" Mitsuru yelled, making Mahiru giggle even more. "Just go away!"
"No!" Mahiru laughed, grabbing Mitsuru's arm. "Let's go, I'm not catching up to the others without you."
"Fine!" Mitsuru stopped dead in his tracks, not moving. Mahiru almost fell from the unexpected stop.
"Hey! What was that for? Let's go!"
"No! I'm not moving until you leave," Mitsuru stated solidly. He really meant it.
"But Mitsuru, I don't want you to get left behind!" Mahiru protested. "Pleeease?"
"No! Leave me alone!" He smacked her hand off his arm and stomped off.
"Hey! Mitsuru, where're you going?" Mahiru asked worriedly, chasing after him. "Come back, I'm sorry! But please don't leave!"
"Mind your own business and go find Nozomu and Akira," Mitsuru said flatly. Maybe tonight I can actually get some time with just me, myself, and I. That'd be nice… No stupid human or werewolf or vampire or anybody else giving me orders. Mitsuru had every intention of ditching the group, which was why he'd offered to carry a tent and some supplies.
"Well… if you change your mind, and you get lonely, you know where I'll be!" Mahiru said, quickly covering up her sadness. Why was Mitsuru always so antisocial? Oh well… She turned and tried to run back.
"Akira! Nozomu!" Mahiru called, her eyes searching the huge forest for her friends. "Where are you guys? Akiiiiiiiraaaaa! Nozoooomuuuuu! Helloooooo?"
Nobody answered.
Meanwhile, a mere 500 feet away, a werewolf and a vampire were watching the unfolding scene—from under a bush.
"Nozomu, I feel kinda bad about this…" Akira whispered to the blonde boy lying on the ground next to him.
"Don't worry, Akira, it'll be fine!" Nozomu insisted, trying to keep as quiet as he could. "As long as Mitsuru doesn't completely ditch Mahiru, it'll be perfect. So we'll make sure they get a tent up, and then we'll go back to the Moonshine, okay?"
"Well… okay… but are you sure about leaving them together with just one tent?" Akira asked anxiously.
"Yeah, it'll be fine. Don't worry! Think of it as… bonding time, okay?" The young vampire was clearly enjoying this.
"Akira? Nozomu!" Mahiru was starting to panic now. The sun was just starting to set, and she was all alone in a huge forest. "Where are you guys?"
Suddenly, Mahiru heard rustling in a tree behind her. She whipped around, finding herself face to face with an extremely annoyed tengu.
"Ahhh! Mitsuru!" She cried, jumping back. "You scared me!"
"Stupid girl, what have you been yelling about? I could hear you from all the way over there," he said, pointing in the direction of a small clearing.
"Mitsuru! I'm so glad I found you!" Mahiru said, wrapping her arms around an unsuspecting Mitsuru. "I thought I was lost and all alone! I was so scared!"
Mitsuru wasn't sure what one should do when one is hugged, so he just stood there for a moment, stunned. Then he regained his composure. "Get off me!" He snarled, extricating himself from her grasp. Mahiru didn't mind, though, and only sighed in relief.
"I'm so glad I found you! But what are we gonna do? It's getting dark, and we don't have a place to sleep or anything to eat or a fire or—" Mahiru's anxious babble was cut short when she found herself unable to speak, due to the fact that Mitsuru's hand was clamped over her mouth.
"Just stop talking, okay?" Mitsuru said angrily, grabbing Mahiru's hand and dragging her over to the clearing. He pulled off his backpack, opened it, and took out the tent. "Where's your tent? You probably can't set it up, so I guess I'll have to do yours as well as mine…" He sighed.
"Er…" Mahiru stared at the ground, turning a little red. "I don't have a tent…"
"WHAT!"
"Mitsuru, calm down!"
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN, YOU DON'T HAVE A TENT!"
"Mitsuru, it's okay! I'll sleep out here, okay?" Mahiru tried to soothe him, setting her backpack down on the ground.
"You can't sleep outside, you stupid girl! You'll get sick! What are we gonna do?" Mitsuru was really mad.
"Well… we could always share a tent…" Mahiru suggested quietly, sure that Mitsuru would reject this idea with a passion.
"WHAT! THAT'S THE WORST IDEA I'VE EVER HEARD OF!" Mitsuru said angrily, his face turning beet red. "WE CANNOT SHARE A TENT! THAT IS A VIOLATION OF MY PERSONAL SPACE! NO WAY, NO HOW!"
"Done," Mitsuru said shortly, having finished pounding the last stake of their into the ground. "Is the fire ready yet?"
"Well, not quite…" Mahiru said sadly. Mitsuru had done his part, but she wasn't doing very well with the fire. They always made it look so easy in movies! But for the life of her, Mahiru simply could not manage to get her impressive pile of leaves, twigs, small sticks, and logs to light up in flames. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that she was attempting to start the fire by rubbing to sticks together while blowing on them. Mitsuru sighed.
"You are completely useless, you know that?"
"Hey, that's mean! I can do lots of stuff!"
Mitsuru smirked. "Like what?"
"Well, I can…" Mahiru stopped to think for a moment. "Um… I can clean, and I can cook a little, and I can sew, and I can swim really well, and—"
"Shut up. You're giving me a headache. Now stand back," Mitsuru advised. Mahiru looked at him questioningly, but he ignored her. She complied with his request, and backed up several feet.
SHWOOK!
"Wahh!" Mahiru cried, jumping back.
"I told you to stand back!" Mitsuru told her matter-of-factly. He had used his electrical powers to light the fire, giving Mahiru quite a scare.
"Well, at least now we can have dinner! I have hotdogs!" Mahiru said happily, pulling two roasting sticks and a package of hotdogs and buns out of her backpack. "And after we eat hotdogs, we can make s'mores!"
Mitsuru snatched a stick and hotdog from her, stabbing the stick straight through the hotdog, placing it over the fire. "What's a s'more?"
"What!" Mahiru gasped, almost dropping her hotdog in shock. "You mean to tell me that you don't know what a s'more is!"
"Geez, forget it. I don't care what a stupid s'more is. Forget it." Mitsuru said, irritated. Who cared if he didn't know what a s'more was?
"Oh, Mitsuru, s'mores are wonderful things! I'll show you how to make one after dinner, okay?" Mahiru stared dreamily into space, almost drooling at the idea of having s'mores later.
"Uh, Mahiru? Your hotdog is burning."
"Wahh!" Mahiru cried, pulling her hotdog out of the flames and placing it on the bun. She took a bite of it, smiling happily. "Mmm, it's so good!"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," Mitsuru mumbled unenthusiastically. Of all the people to get stuck with for a night, it just had to be her. I couldn't have asked for a more annoying person to look after, he thought unhappily.
"Mitsuru, I'm gonna show you how to make a s'more now!" Mahiru exclaimed, her excited face illuminated only by the fire, seeing as the sun had set a little while ago. She pulled a few items out of her backpack. Mitsuru didn't say a word, but raised an eyebrow in response. "First you have to roast a marshmallow!"
"A marshmallow? What's that?" Mitsuru asked. Mahiru gaped at him.
"Are you serious? You don't know what a marshmallow is?"
"Yeah, so shut up!" Mitsuru glared at her.
"I'm sorry! It's just that I've never met anyone who didn't know what a marshmallow was before!" Mahiru defended herself, giggling. "A marshmallow is a little fluffy thing that is made up of pure sugar. It's yummy!" She popped a plain marshmallow into her mouth, then handed one to Mitsuru, who cautiously did the same, staring suspiciously at Mahiru.
"Bleh! It's so sweet!" Mitsuru grimaced as he swallowed. It was so sickeningly sweet… but kind of good… not that he'd tell Mahiru that.
"Yeah, but you don't usually eat them plain. You have to cook them!" Mahiru said happily, handing the tengu another marshmallow. He placed it on the stick and shoved it in the fire.
"Ahh! Mitsuru! Your marshmallow is on fire!" Mahiru cried, grabbing his stick from him and pulling it out of the fire, and blowing on it to put out the flames.
"What's wrong with that? I cooked it, didn't I?" Mitsuru frowned. This was more complicated than he'd previously thought.
"Yeah, you cooked it, but you have to roast it. You just want to brown it a little, by holding it over the fire like this." Mahiru demonstrated for him, and within minutes, she had a perfect, fluffy marshmallow on the end of her stick. "See? It's easy!" She giggled.
"Yeah, yeah, just hand over another marshmallow," Mitsuru grumbled. He stuck it on the end of the stick and thrust it into the fire. Unfortunately, he moved the stick too fast, and the marshmallow went flying off the end of his stick and into the dark expanse of the forest. Mitsuru frowned even more. This marshmallow-roasting thing was harder than Mahiru made it look.
"Here you go, try again! I'm sure you'll get it this time!" Mahiru said cheerfully, handing him another marshmallow. Mitsuru reluctantly speared it with his stick, and carefully placed it in the fire. He watched it carefully and turned it when it was getting brown on one side. Soon, he had a marshmallow that was comparable to Mahiru's.
"That's really good, Mitsuru!" Mahiru exclaimed. "Now for step two!"
"You mean there's more?" Mitsuru cried, looking defeated.
"Yup! Now we have to put the marshmallows on a graham cracker." Mahiru pulled out two graham crackers from a bag, broke them in half, and handed two of the halves to Mitsuru. "Wait! Now you need the chocolate!" She opened a chocolate bar, broke off a few pieces, and handed Mitsuru a chunk of chocolate. "Here, now put this on the bottom graham cracker, like this." Mitsuru did exactly what Mahiru did, and soon he was ready to put the finishing touch on his s'more: the marshmallow.
"Now, all you have to do now is put the marshmallow on the s'more, like this!" Mahiru skillfully sandwiched the marshmallow between the two halves of the graham cracker, pushed them together, and slid her stick out of the marshmallow. Mitsuru attempted to do the same, but it didn't come out quite right. His s'more was a little off center, but Mahiru was still ecstatic about it.
"Look, Mitsuru! You made your first s'more! Eat it, eat it!" She urged, biting into her own. Mitsuru frowned at her, but sank his own sharp teeth into the s'more. He bit off a chunk, chewed it, and cocked his head to the side. It was so sweet! He wasn't sure if he liked it or not. He pondered this as he ate the rest of the s'more.
"Ah! When did that happen?" Mitsuru cried, shocked to find a mysterious, sticky white substance smeared across his fingers.
"That's the marshmallow, silly!" Mahiru laughed. "It gets sticky when you cook it!"
"You should have told me that!" Mitsuru snapped at her.
"Sorry, sorry. Hehe!" Mahiru giggled as she watched the aggravated tengu attempt to lick the marshmallow off his fingers. Of course, this action did nothing more than spread the marshmallow to his face, as well. Which, of course, made Mahiru laugh even harder.
"Here, let me help you," Mahiru offered, not waiting for an answer as she poured water on a cloth. Then she held Mitsuru's face still with one hand, gently wiping the marshmallow off his face with the wet washcloth. Mitsuru just sat there, unmoving, shocked at her audacity. "Hold still, you're making it harder!" Mahiru giggled.
"Wahh… ah, you don't have to do that!" Mitsuru said tensely, grabbing the washcloth from her hand and pushing her away. He quickly cleaned himself with the washcloth, then threw it at Mahiru. "I'm going to sleep now. Don't bother me."
"Um, Mitsuru?" Mahiru asked, suddenly nervous. She stared at the ground. "Could you… Could you stay out here with me until I put the fire out?" She looked up at him with big blue puppy-dog eyes. "Pleeease?"
"Fine, but make it quick!" Mitsuru sighed. Stupid girl, afraid of the dark… So why am I staying out here with her? Why don't I just ditch her? Mitsuru thought to himself as he watched her run around, cleaning up the camp and putting out the fire. No… I can't do that. Then she'd be all alone. Can't do that. Wait! Why not? Why should I care if she gets mauled by a beaver or a bear or something? Mitsuru frowned at himself. I don't care… but it wouldn't settle to well with the others if I let something happen to her… but I don't care… I don't!
"Okay, all done!" Mahiru said happily, holding a flashlight. "Ready?"
"Ready for what?"
"Uh… never mind!" Mahiru said quickly, averting her eyes. "Let's just get to sleep, okay?"
"Okay." Mitsuru stepped into the tent and sat down on one side of the tent. Then it him it. "What! We're gonna be sleeping together in this little tent?"
"Well… yeah…" They fell silent for a moment, and both of them were glad that it was dark, so that the other couldn't see how red they were.
"Fine. Let's just go to sleep," said Mitsuru in a strangled voice, lying down and covering himself up with the blanket. Wait a minute. The blanket? As in, there's only one? Crap.
Mahiru cautiously lied down next to him, covering herself up with the blanket, as well. It was a little awkward at first, sharing a blanket with someone who was little more than a foot away from you, but soon Mahiru was fast asleep, much to Mitsuru's relief. Suddenly, a cold wind blew into the tent, shaking the tent and making both occupants shiver. Not too long afterward, Mitsuru finally fell asleep as well.
Mahiru woke up to a rustling sound coming from outside the tent. She gasped as she was jerked awake, pulling the blanket up to her chin. There was something outside of the tent, and she was scared and cold. So it wasn't a big surprise that the semi-conscious girl's course of action was to snuggle up against the warm object that was so close to her.
"Mmm?" Mitsuru questioned groggily. A small part of him was conscious enough to realize that Mahiru was nestling herself against him.
Now, before you find out what he does next, you must take into account that Mitsuru was not entirely awake, and therefore cannot be held accountable for his actions. At least, that's what he would tell you.
Mitsuru was cold and not quite awake yet. So, when he found something soft and warm nuzzling against him, he wrapped his arms around it and pulled it closer to him. Mahiru snuggled even nearer, and soon they both fell fast asleep once again.
Mitsuru woke up to the sound of birds chirping. Which was strange, but kind of nice and peaceful. He lie there for a minute, completely and utterly relaxed, his brain still in the process of waking up. It was for this reason that it took him a good five minutes to realize that he was in a very, er, intimate position with Mahiru.
"WAH!" Mitsuru screamed. "What the hell do you think you're doing!"
"Ughh… what?" Mahiru groaned, eyes fluttering open. She found herself looking right at Mitsuru's neck. "Wha! What happened?" She pushed him away from her, and his arms flew away from her. "What did you do to me last night?" She demanded sleepily.
"What did I do to you? I could ask you the same thing! I woke up, and you were practically on me!" Mitsuru yelled.
"You were the one with your arms around me!" Mahiru stated, obviously still not entirely awake. Mitsuru opened his mouth, but closed it again as he realized that he didn't have an argument for that one.
"Er…"
"I'm gonna go see what we have for breakfast, 'kay?" Mahiru rubbed her eyes, flattened her hair, and exited the tent. Mitsuru flopped back down on his back, and closed his eyes. How could he have let that happen in his sleep? Geez…
But now that Mahira was gone, he was cold.
Six Hours Later
"Civilization!" Mahiru cried. "We've made it!" She raced down the hill into the town below, in desperate search of a map. And a bathroom. Definitely, the bathroom was on the top of her list.
Twenty minutes later, they found a map. And were more than a bit surprised to see where they were.
"Wow! Mitsuru, are you sure this is right?" Asked Mahiru.
"Well, we started here, and we're here right now," said Mitsuru as he pointed to different dots on the map. So that's… a total of 12 miles from where we started to here."
"Seriously!"
"Yeah."
"How're we gonna get home! 12 miles is way too far to walk…" Mahiru started crying anime tears.
"We don't, stupid. We get a cab."
"Oh. Okay!" Mahiru agreed happily. "But… how're we gonna explain this to everyone else?"
"Don't worry about that just yet."
And so she didn't.
"Moonshine, right here," said the driver of the cab, stopping the cab in front of the shop. Mahiru had never been so happy to see it.
"Thank you, sir!" Mahiru cried, paying the driver and jumping out of the car. Mitsuru closed the door behind him as he got out after her, and the taxi drove away.
"We're baaaaack!" Mahiru called as she opened the door to the shop. "Obouro-san, we're back!"
"Geez, what took you guys so long?" Asked Nozomu, hiding a grin underneath a mask of concern. "Me and Akira searched for you after two went missing, but we came back before it got dark, since we didn't have any food. How did you two hold up, in just one tent?"
"Shut up," Mitsuru growled dangerously. Mahiru sweatdropped.
"So, I hear you two got lost in the woods, did you?" Chuckled Oboro as he walked into the room. "Now, tell me, Mitsuru. Why didn't you just fly the two of you back here after you got lost?"
Mitsuru opened his mouth, but closed it again when nothing came out. Everyone else just stared at him.
"Now, Mitsuru, don't tell me you forgot that you can fly!" Nozomu laughed.
"Shut up," Mitsuru growled again.
"Aw, he probably just wanted to be alone with Mahiru!" Akira teased, causing the anger mark on Mitsuru's forehead to grow to the size of a small watermelon.
"Shut up! I did not!" Mitsuru yelled.
"So, then you forgot that you could fly?"
"NO! SHUT UP AND LEAVE ME ALONE!" Mitsuru screamed as he stomped upstairs to his bedroom, slamming the door.
Everyone was a bit speechless after that.
A few seconds later, Akira popped the question.
"So which was it?"
So anyways, please review. Because it'll make my day.
