Angels In Waiting

By: Roxie

One-Shot

“Where am I?” gray eyes flickered into the darkness. His body felt so light.

“SIRIUS! NO!” he heard a distant shout for his name.

“What!” Sirius Black’s mind was confused. “Harry!” Sirius tried to run but ran right into a solid wall.

“Harry!” he shouted back, touching the solid wall. His eyes adjusted to the darkness.

“He can’t here you.” said a voice behind him.

Sirius whirled around and his eyebrows shot up in surprise.

The figure that was sitting on the edge of something black and solid, glanced up at him. His face was barely visible.

”Who are you! Where am I? Harry’s calling me!” demanded Sirius bounding over, in long strides.

He heard Harry’s shouts, and it struck him deep with in his heart. He was fighting his cousin one minute and the next minute he was standing here in the darkness.

“To answer your questions, I am the next in line, I really haven’t figured out where we are, and Harry can’t hear you.” said the voice solemnly.

“What? Why can’t he hear me! He’s out there facing a bunch of Deatheaters! I’m here! Staring at you and the black walls! Take me out there now!” growled Sirius, angrily.

“Its not my fault. I’m just telling you what I know.” said the figure.

Sirius’ mind was tumbling with questions. He needed to get out there, “My godson! He’s gonna die! How do we get out?” Sirius ran over and his hand touched the black wall. “I came in through here! I need back.” He touched the wall and went all the way down, with his hands trying to feel for some sort of hole.

“You won’t get back in. You’re in waiting. It’s final.”

Sirius stood and stared over, “What is final?” he asked slowly.

“Your fate.” he replied.

Sirius gazed around him, “How long have you been waiting?” asked Sirius.

“About six months. You can’t leave here till you come to terms with yourself, and your life and accept it.”

“Except what? I’m in a black hole!” Sirius announced.

The man shook his head, “No, you are dead.”

Sirius’s face fell, his expression went dark and he breathed in sharply, “D…D.. Dead? No no! I’m not dead! I’m alive! Look! Touch, solid. I’m not dead!” He nearly shrieked.

The man shook his head, “You’re dead Sirius. You’re in waiting for the afterlife. But you can go until you except it.”

“Except it? My GODSON IS OUT THERE! He’s going to get himself killed!” Sirius shouted at the top of his lungs. But his words bounded off and shouted back at him.

“It’s not my fault! I’m just a guy before you.” said the voice.

Sirius closed his eyes and pressed his back against the black wall. He slid down and shook his head, “My godson. My godson.” was all he could say. “This is Dumbledore’s fault! I knew we should have told him! I knew it!” Sirius said, his voice cracking.

“Told him what?” asked the voice.

“About the prophecy! Dumbledore, insisted that we should wait, and that Harry would learn Occlumency! But he can’t learn with a snarky baboon teaching him!”

“Oh yes! Headmaster Dumbledore. I remember him. Why did you listen to him? You are an adult.” Sirius’ face went stone, “It was part of the Order.” “Oh yes, the Order of the Phoenix. Mmm… so I’ve heard. That’s no excuse. Just because someone tells you to do something doesn’t mean you have to do it. You ought to think what’s best for yourself. It’s your decisions, not anyone else’s.”

Sirius laid his head against the wall, “My godson! I got to know if he’s all right.” he pleaded.

“Why plead to me? I’m like you! I’m waiting to be let in. I have to come to terms with myself, and my own death before I can enter.”

Sirius raised his head and stared over at the man in the darkness.

“How do I accept something I didn’t want?”

“I don’t know, but you must find a way.”

“Harry, he’ll be so devastated. I can’t do this to him!”

“But you did.”

Sirius scowled, “I know I did! I thought my godson was going to be in trouble! I had to run to him. I’d die for him.” He sighed, “And I did, but not the way I wanted. I’d like to at least know that Harry’s all right.”

“I believe you can find out if he’s all right. Once you reach the afterlife you may look down upon the loved ones. I’m not positive as of when you’ll get there. This is just what I’ve heard from people passing by. Some go more quickly than myself. I’ve been in waiting years.”

“Years? How long is years?” asked Sirius.

“Four years ago. I did something stupid and now I’m reaping the reward.” he told Sirius.

“What did you do?” asked Sirius.

“I followed the wrong path, went straight into darkness.”

“Voldemort?” asked Sirius.

The man hissed, “Yes, unfortunately so.” he said, with a hint of depression in his voice.

Sirius’ eyes narrowed, “What did you do?”

“Followed him, allowed him to own me. I was killed in the process. I’m still trying to come to terms. You know a young boy came through here younger than the both of us. He looked around and smiled and went straight through. Good looking chap he was.”

Sirius frowned, and stared down at his hands in the darkness, he rubbed his face, and groaned, “So I died due to Bellatrix Lestrange! My own bloody cousin! Well, at least I went fighting. I just hope Harry will be OK. And Remus.” he went on for a few moments talking about each of them. “Harry is so amazing. He’s a great child and a great teen and premature adult. The kid has suffered, and I didn’t make him feel any better. Instead I just hid out in the house like Dumbledore asked me too.” Sirius felt the tears trail down his cheeks and held in a deep breath. “I shouldn’t have listened. I should have used my instincts.” He moved his head back and forth.

“I care so much for Harry. Remus too…. I don’t want them to be upset. They are two very lonely people deep down. They need each other, but now I can’t make it so. I can’t pull them together. They may just pull apart.”

The man listened and didn’t speak, he shifted.

“You wouldn’t believe how good Harry raised himself. Dumbledore then comes in and destroys him!” said Sirius gritting his teeth. He could taste his tears and closed his eyes, “I’m not ready to leave! I don’t want to leave Harry. I need to know he’s going to be all right.”

“I can’t say nothing. I don’t know your situation. But I do know that you may be able to except yourself if you can get over Harry and know that he’ll be all right.”

Sirius bowed his head, “How do I do that?”

“I can’t tell you! I’ve been here forever! I don’t know. I’m just telling you what I’ve seen.”

“He’s so strong. The boy is! You know he was twelve when he took on a basilisk? Destroyed it he did! Took on Voldemort so many times with his bare hands, and the fearless expression in his eyes. The determination. He’s amazing.” Sirius said, his tears running off onto his robes. Sirius wiped them and sighed, “He’s so much like Lily and James. His parents, they’d really be proud of him. He goes on without a care in the world. Tries to make the best of a bad situation.” Sirius smiled, “He’s so amusing, he’s always looking out for you. He never gives a thought to himself. He don’t care what happens to himself as long as others around him are all right.”

“Sounds like a good kid. He’s got backbone. I’m sure he’ll be all right.” said the voice.

“Yes, I just want him to be happy. If he’s happy, I’m happy!” said Sirius with a timid sigh.

Sirius sighed, “Good-bye Harry! I love you more than you could ever know.” whispered Sirius to himself.

A bright light flashed and blared itself down onto the small room. Illuminating. “Looks like you get to go through.” said the man with a sad voice. “And you were so talkative too.”

Sirius’ mouth opened, as he stood, and stared up, just as a staircase was provided. It stood right in front of Sirius. Its light was warm and filled his heart with hope and love.

“Who are you?” asked Sirius.

The man stood, and walked into the light, his features were pale and he wore a purple turban on his head and a purple and black robe. “Quincy Quirrel.” He said, and Sirius’ eyes widen, “You.. You were the one… who went after my godson!” Sirius said, angrily.

Quirrel nodded, “And now I’m reaping the reward by being forced to stay here. In the darkness, probably forever.” said Quirrel. “They don’t want me. The afterlife doesn’t want someone like me. Go on! They’re waiting for you.” said Quirrel, with a sigh. He moved back into the shadows and took his seat. “I just sit and wait, to see the next one who comes in. Good day my friend.”

Sirius looked at the man with newfound pity. This room wasn’t terrible but it was the type of room where you’d sit and dwell on your thoughts and stew in your own mess, knowing no one will come around and surrounding by large black walls. He shuddered, maybe the afterlife will bring something bright. Maybe, he could even look down at Harry and Remus, make sure they’re all right.

Yes, that’s it. Taking the steps one at a time he felt something pull at him, the warmth only got warmer and the light only got brighter, but it didn’t hurt his eyes. A smile flittered onto his face, and soon as the light disappeared so did Sirius Black.
