Chapter VI: The Demon Underworld
LES: Lots of people have asked for more description of the Underworld, so I'm going to do just that. Sorry for the long wait, but here's a chapter.
Jak and Keira went their separate ways, but not without one good-bye kiss which Daxter protested.
"What if somebody sees you?" Daxter asked, pleading.
"Please, Dax. There is not a person on this planet who would dare to spy on me, and if there are… they won't live very long." Jak said, as he directed Keira out the back door, just to be safe. "Don't look back." Jak whispered as he closed the door, leaving Keira outside and alone.
With that, she began to walk away without looking back to see if he was watching her, a very hard thing to do. She loved him, desperately. But she also knew that their relationship would be in constant danger until he became mortal… if that was even possible.
She couldn't believe it. He was willing to give up his immortality for her. She could bet that her ex's wouldn't do that, even if they had immortality to give up. She could think of no better way to prove your love for someone, giving up something as precious as immortality.
She walked away from that house and didn't look back…
Keira had wondered if Jak was watching her and the truth was… he was. He watched as she walked away, without looking back as he had said. Yes, this would cause a lot of problems… but he loved her, as cliché as it sounded. He loved her.
"Now, I know that you are doing this whole new plot and stuff, but I don't suppose you've forgotten that you are due for a Council meeting today…" Daxter said.
Jak was pulled cruelly out of his daze. "Crap!" He swore as he spun on his heel.
Jak practically ran up to the secret door, whose actual location will not be revealed in this story, as it is a closely guarded secret. (A/N: You should've seen what I had to do to find this stuff out!) There was a large man, a Red Demon by the looks of him blocking the doorway. His hair was dyed a bright red color and it was spiked so that it looked like his whole head was on fire. He wore dark glasses and a trench coat, which concealed the many weapons of his bodyguard trade. However, as with all Red Demons, his main weapon was his supreme strength that far outstripped other Demons.
The Red Demon stopped him without a word. Jak calmly lifted up the sleeve of his shirt to reveal the black snake tattoo. The Red Demon instantly backed off. "I'm sorry, Councilor. It will never happen again."
Jak glared at the man. "See to it that it doesn't."
"Of coarse." The Red Demon stepped aside to allow Jak entrance. Jak briskly walked past, opened the door, and entered the legendary Demon Underworld. Everything was dark, but it mattered not to Jak, who could see in the dark.
All the walls were painted black, except for the pictures that hung along the wall's length that depicted certain famous demons, mostly Council members, but there were other types of demon's that have earned their eternal glory on the walls of the Underworld. No one inside the hallway dared to stop him, for they all knew Jak's reputation. In fact, some of the lesser demons would dive into other rooms in order to avoid running into the Dark Demon.
However, one demon didn't jump out of the way like the others. He had a green leaf tattooed into his shoulder and a cruel mark cut into his skin. Jak recognized him instantly, it was Tigran, the Demon who had been on trail not long ago for loving a mortal, exactly the crime that Jak was now committing.
The demon looked up at Jak, and they got caught into a staring match. Suddenly, without warning, Tigran burst into fits of uncontrollable laughter. Jak was suddenly reminded of Tigran's promise. 'You'll fall in love with a mortal. And when you do… I'll laugh.'
Jak growled and shoved the laughing man out of his way. Tigran roughly hit the cold floor, still rolling in fits of laughter. Jak continued his way down the long hallway until he reached a large black door. Only a select few could enter the Chamber of the Council. Jak, being a Councilor, was one of those few. He lifted up his right hand slightly and let his hand slowly transform into the demon hand with pale skin and long claws. Jak pressed his changed hand against the metal door, which seemed to melt away at his touch. If any person without clearance tried to touch the door, they would be trapped there, held by the powers of the ancient door, until they could be 'dealt with.'
Jak briskly walked into the Chamber, where the other three Councilors were already waiting for him. Fara looked up. "You're late, Jak."
"I had a late night." Was all that Jak would say on the subject.
Fara laughed. "Another poor she-demon expecting a nonexistent phone call?"
Again with the jokes. Jak forced a laugh. "Something like that."
"Great." Fara sobered up and got ready for business. "Now that we're all here." She glared pointedly at Jak. "Let's get down to business."
Anyway, that's where that brings us to Jak, inside the Demon library. True, that demons are immortal and never die, but not all of them were ancient. Jak was considered the youngest member on the Council at five thousand years old. All the other Council members topped ten thousand at the least. And they weren't even the oldest! One of their most ancient ones were said to have conversed with a Precursor, eons ago. Eons of years on their shoulders, and they still looked like they were no older than twenty. These demons were held in high respect in the demon culture.
Anyway, I'd bet that you'd what to find out what Jak was doing instead of getting a lecture on demon longevity. Jak walked to the very back of the immense library, searching for the object he knew was there… somewhere. Finally, he found it. It was in a glass case with inch-thick glass. The object was surrounded by a state-of-the-art security system, heat sensors, motion detectors, cameras, the works. The object itself, was an extremely ancient weapon, it was said that mortals invented it, but Jak personally didn't believe that, using an ancient magic to use against their enemies, the ancient, immortal demons. It was a long blade, made of obsidian, with magical runes carved into the surface of the blade. The hilt was just as dark, made from steel and set with blood-red rubies; this weapon had a name that most demons feared. The Blade of Death, the only weapon ever created with the power to take away the immortality of a demon.
"One inch of glass separates me from my lo…" Jak said to himself, but he was interrupted.
"Councilor?" The Head Librarian, a Blue Demon, walked over. "Why are you so close to that weapon?"
"I was just studying it." Jak said, respectively. Remember how I mentioned that some Demons have lived for eons? Well, if you confused by Jak's respectfulness, know that the Head Librarian, a woman by the name of Nina, lived in the time of the Precursors, eons Jak's senor. "Is it true that this weapon can take away a demon's immortality?" Jak asked casually, like he was just mildly interested in finding out if that legend were true or not.
"Yes, that power is true." Nina said. "It has brought about the death of many respectable demon's over the ages. It took hundreds of years and many demon souls to be able to capture it. Now, it rests here, in our library, reminding us that mortals aren't as stupid as we like to think."
"How did they make that blade?" Jak asked. "Surely they didn't have the power?"
"You are right. No mortal would have the power to make a blade like that." Nina said. She paused, the silence stretched for several minutes. "But a demon would…"
For the first time, Jak looked surprised. He had never heard this. "A demon? But… why would a demon do that?"
"It is not known." Nina said. "Maybe he hated another demon and wanted him dead, so he created a blade that was capable of the job. However, one way or another, the blade fell into the hands of the mortals, who began using it against us."
"What happened to the one who made the blade?" Jak asked.
"He was imprisoned." Nina said. "For thousands of years. Then, once we managed to liberate the blade back from the mortals, we used his own sword on him."
"So he's dead?" Jak asked.
"For thousands of years." Nina said. "A pity, I would've loved to find out why he created that blade."
Jak looked down at the deadly weapon. He had always been told that a mortal created the weapon. "Then why do they say that a mortal created this blade?"
"The Council has forbidden anyone to mention it." Nina said. "This was before you joined them, of coarse. The fact that a demon created out most feared enemy is a shame that we would never be able to live down."
"What was his name?" Jak asked. "He must've been an extremely powerful demon to create such a weapon."
"We are not allowed to speak his name." Nina said. "The Council took away his name, and made it an unmentionable name."
Jak was amazed. To have your name taken away and made unmentionable was a terrible crime. Compared to that humiliation, mortal-lovers got off easy.
"Then this weapon is truly dangerous." Jak said. "Make sure that it never falls into the wrong hands."
"Of coarse, Councilor." Nina said. "This blade is protected by the best security system that money could buy. An ant couldn't sneak in here."
"Very good." Jak said. "Thank you, Nina, for your help."
"You're welcome." Nina said. "I am always happy to help."
Jak nodded politely and walked out of the library. Here was some more trouble. The weapon was so well protected that even an ant couldn't hope to sneak in and steal it. And, if an ant can't get in, than Jak certainly couldn't get in. There was no one that he knew off that had the clearance to even touch the blade, not that any of the others would want to touch it.
He also couldn't stop thinking about the one who created the weapon. Why had he made the weapon? It must've taken years to create a weapon like that, the power to take away immortality… Jak could see himself working on a project like that for years just because of a grudge. But maybe he'd do it for love… Jak paused. Perhaps the demon was in the same predicament that he was in. Perhaps he loved a mortal woman and desperately wanted to get rid of his immortality. Was that so evil? It was just the thing he wanted to do. He loved Keira, but the only way he could ever be with her was if he lost his cursed immortality. If he couldn't find a way, he'd have to feel heartbreak. Even if the affair was never discovered by his peers, she would grow older and eventually die, while he would be young forever, cursed to wander the world until the end of time.
Was it wrong for a demon to hate his immortality? He knew that some mortals would give anything for immortality, but it wasn't that great. He remembered his years wandering the desert. No food, no water, and no death. He remembered his mother being killed by his own father because he thought she had an affair with the devil. He remembered the faces of the children that he killed five thousand years ago. He remembered the faces of the demons that he marked over the years, along with the dying faces of the mortals that he killed for the crime of love. Five thousand years he'd walked the earth and he only had one thought about it.
Enough…
