Don’t Say You Love Me

Many Students rushed into the busy school, a mad rush that popular Rouge wanted to evade. She gripped her hands tightly around the books and folders she held in her arms. She walked into the school gates, careful not to trip on the already discarded rubbish on the school grounds. The sun was shining overhead as Rouge mumbled to herself about Knuckles. He promised he would call her but he never did. It seemed to her that he was avoiding her, or she was just being difficult as usual. Rouge spotted her best friend Amy waving to her and patting a seat and one of the white picnic benches that were scattered through out the school grounds. Rouge walked up to the gang and gave them a cheery smile. Seated around the table was the king of speed Sonic, next was his boyfriend Tails who gave Rouge a quick smile before returning to his breakfast. Next to Amy was her boyfriend Espio, the school’s ninja. Sitting at the far end of the table was Cream and Charmy, 1st years in love and lastly Knuckles. Rouge smiled at the rest but frowned at him. Sonic gave Rouge a goofy smile.

“Rouge, did we have physics homework?”

“Yeah... Don’t tell me you didn’t do it again”, she said, sighing and pulling out her homework for Sonic to copy. Sonic pulled out a pen and started copying it out.

“Thanks Rouge. I don’t think a could handle another letter home from Mr Welch”

“You owe me”, she said, spinning her pen around her finger. Amy nudged Rouge and nodded towards handsome black and red hedgehog that was walking into the school gates.

“He looks nice”

“Yeah, and in that leather too”. He was wearing black skater jeans with many chains hanging down his belt, a black top with outlined his muscles and a black leather jacket. A single silver chain hung down his chest which carried a black and red jewel on it. He glanced at them and started walking over.

“Quick, he’s coming”, Amy whispered

“Calm down”, Rouge said, getting up to face him. He gave her a smile; it was a very nice smile that showed off all of his shining white teeth.

“May I help you”, she asked.

“Hi I’m Shadow, do you know where room G18 is, I’m knew you see”, he said. Rouge smiled again, showing off her beautiful teeth. Shadow had never seen anything so pretty in his life. She was perfect in every way possible.

“Well your in luck because all of us are in G19, so we can show you around if you want”, she said, blushing at the way he looked at her.

“Thanks, you are most kind”, he said, taking a seat next to Rouge and Amy.

“This is my best friend Amy Rose and her boyfriend Espio”, Rouge said, gesturing towards Amy and Espio. Amy gave a little wave and Espio simply nodded.

Moving on, this is Sonic and his boyfriend Tails”, she said, nodding at Sonic and Tails. Shadow raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

“This is Cream and Charmy and last is Knuckles”, she said sitting down and frowning at Knuckles. Shadow gave a little nod at them and said nothing. Sonic, who hated staying silent, cleared his throat.

“So Shadow, why you don’t tell us a little bit about yourself”. Shadow narrowed his eyes at Sonic. He didn’t really want to talk to anyone but the white bat.

“You didn’t tell me who you are”, he said, folding his arms.

“Oh yeah, I’m Rouge”, she said, taking her book back from Sonic and putting it back neatly into her bag. Just then the bell rang for registration. Knuckles jumped to his feet and hurried off.

“Hey where are you going”, Rouge called after him. Amy shook her head.

“He is such a pig”, she said. Espio shrugged

“He is a bit”, he said, taking Amy’s hand and heading to G19. Rouge stared daggers into Knuckles before turning back to Shadow.

“Come on, lets go”, she said, linking her arm through his. Shadow stared for a minute at what she was doing but shrugged. Hey what the heck, he wasn’t complaining. They walked through the school as animals rushed to there lockers to get their things. Rouge stopped outside a class labelled G18. She winked at him.

“See ya around Shadow”, she said, turning into the class next door.

“See ya”, he muttered. God he was so stupid, the most attractive girl he had met in his life was talking to him and he didn’t know what to say to her. Well maybe she would like a bad boy instead, he thought walking into his class for the first time.

2 months later...

Shadow sat with his feet up on the desk, listening to Mr Meadow’s long and pointless story about the history of the world. He yawned and tried to keep his mind of the girl who haunted his dreams with her beauty. He tore out a piece of paper from his history book and rolled it up into a ball and threw it at Sonic. Sonic grinned and threw it back to Shadow. A grin flickered across his face as he took the paper ball and aimed it carefully at Meadows head. He pulled back and threw it as hard as he could. The ball bounced off His head and into the dustbin. The whole class erupted into fits of laughter. Meadow turned around and fished out the ball of paper from the dustbin, his face red with anger. He faced the class, the ball clutched in his hand like a relic.

“WHO’S IDEA OF A JOKE WAS THIS”, he shouted across the class, silencing the laughter that had once filled the class. He was fuming and Shadow knew it was best to keep silent.

“This has the work of Shadow and Sonic’s name written all over it”, he muttered. Shadow stood up, smiling as he did so.

“I threw it Sir”, he said. Meadow sighed.

“You just can’t help yourself can you, Shadow”, he said. Shadow shrugged.

“Its just so talk so boring like, so I need to spark the lesson up a bit”, he said, throwing a grin at Sonic. A loud buzz filled the room as people started to pack up their things. Meadow sighed, rubbing his forehead and counting to ten. He would do this when he was dealing with difficult teens. In this case he did a lot of counting when he was with Shadow.

“Don’t forget the paper on the Roman Empire is due in next week”, he called as students hurried out the door. He straightened up, giving Shadow a look that shows that there will be no more fooling about.

“Shadow, detention after school today and a letter home, again”, he said, pulling out a TTP sheet and filling it in. Shadow was hoping on one foot was yawning.

“Knock knock”. Shadow turned around. It was Rouge. She looked as lovely as ever. She smiled at him quickly and Shadow rolled his eyes. Meadow looked up.

“Ah Rouge, come in, I’ll be with you in a minute”, he said, filling it out. He handed the note to Shadow.

“Make sure you give it to your parents this time”, he said, taking off his glasses. He turned his attention to Rouge.

“What can I do for you”, he said, smiling. Shadow walked out of the classroom as Rouge started talking to Meadow about some boring stuff. Sonic was leaning against the wall outside the classroom. He grinned when he saw Shadow.

“What took you?”

“Meadow wrote another letter home again and I got detention again”, he said, pulling out some chewing gum. Sonic looked shocked.

“That’s the forth one today”

“So”

“You’re going to get in trouble again”

“See if I care”

“On your head shall it be”, Sonic said heading off to the canteen. Shadow sighed. He liked playing the bad boy. Half of the girls in school were in love with him and a few boys as well. He ran a hand through his spiked quills, feeling the greasy hint it had. He needs to wash his quills when he got home. He glanced over at Meadows class; he was waiting for Rouge so he could ask her out. They had been neighbours for about 2 months now and he really loved her. Not just her looks but her personality, her weakness. He loved everything about her. Shadow Glanced over at the notice board, pausing to look at the poster of Rouge. She was singing tonight in the talent show and he wasn’t going to miss it for the world...

Later that night...

Rouge stood nervously at the curtains. She was on after Amy. She finished and walked off the stage. Mr Meadow stepped out clapping.

“Thank you Amy, and now we have Rouge singing “All I Really Want”. Rouge stepped out, sweat collecting on her forehead. Her legs felt like they were about to turn to jelly under her. She squinted at the crowd to see if Knuckles was there. He wasn’t but Shadow was. He smiled to her and suddenly she braver. Her legs trembled as she took her place at the mike.

I'll come back again “. She dropped to her knees as teachers hurried forward to help her. It felt like she had just sung her soul out to the world. Tears poured down her face as she got up and walked out of the stage doors.

“Rouge, wait”, a voice behind her called. She turned around. It was Shadow. He smiled, holding the first place cup.

“Here”, he said, handing it to her. Rouge smiled.

“Thank Shadow”, she said, staring at her shoes.

“What’s wrong”, Shadow asked, putting his arm around her. Rouge wriggled.

“I thought Knuckles would be there but he wasn’t”, she said, wiping a tear away. Shadow couldn’t bare to see her cry like that, he pulled her close into a hug, saving the moment between them. She listened to shadows heart thumping, matching her breathing to its rhythm. When they broke apart, Rouge gave him her best smile.

“Thank Shadow”, she said, turning and walking over to her car. She started the engine and drove off.

“See ya Shadow”, she called over the car engine. Shadow was left standing in the car park, a huge smile plastered from ear to ear.

“YES”, he yelled leaping up into the air...
