Nightmare

Henrika- This is a bit of a departure for me. It's in first person and the pairing is kept a secret until the end. Manga-based and a reference to one specific event in the latest chapters. Hope you enjoy it!

I'm screaming and I honestly can't think of why. I try to stop, but I can't seem to; it's too hard. I'm looking at a darkened room, but I can't see anything but the hazy black.

A voice in the darkness, a hand on my shoulder. Then the silence is deafening and I think I've stopped screaming. "What's the matter? What's wrong?" The voice asks again and I choke; I don't know.

A "Nothing." rasps its way out of my throat, and I choke for real this time, my lungs seizing up. The voice hands me a glass of water and I sip it carefully, somehow knowing that if I drank it quickly it would only make things worse.

The black haze is clearing up. I didn't realize that it was my eyes and not the light casting it. "Thanks." I finally manage to say and the voice takes the empty glass away from me.

"Nightmare?" They suggest and I try to concentrate. Then I wonder if I should since it made me wake up screaming, but I try anyways. Bits and pieces coalesce into a very fluid sequence and I'm pretty sure I'm shaking because the hand on my shoulder has started rubbing my back.

"Sorry." I hear myself saying and I don't know why I'm apologizing.

"It's okay." The voice hugs me and I twist around, sobbing into the strong shoulder I've buried my face into. "Do you want to talk about it?"

The words rip themselves out of my throat between sobs, neither of which I can stop. "You…were…dead…an…and you left…me…all alone!" I keep sobbing even though the tears have run dry. The hand that was rubbing my back switches to running through my hair. "It was…that night…all over again." The voice tenses up, than relaxes again, arms wrapping tightly around me.

"What did I tell you?"

"Not to..." I sniffle. "Listen to the enemy."

"Right. I'd never die like that. Now go back to sleep Riza. I promise not to leave you alone."

"Stay with me?"

Roy leaned over and whispered in my ear. "Always."

Henrika- I originally had this planned for Ed, but Roy and Riza just showed up instead. The event I was referring to, if you didn't already figure it out, was when Lust told Riza that Mustang was dead and she lost all hope. Roy used his flames to cauterize his own wounds ouch and showed up for the rescue. Review please, I'm curious as to whether this fic worked or not. Thanks to Terry McElrath for pointing out an error.
