The night was young, the full moon having hardly left the safety of the horizon. Stars winked down from the velvety black of the sky, and the sweet scent of the forest drifted across his nostrils, invading his mind and making him wish he could take a vacation – just run from this place and return ages from now. His feet and hands were already itching, needing to get out and move. Chakra was building up just under his skin, filling his limbs with energy just like lightning filled the air with electricity just before a storm.

He cast a weary glance at the pile of paperwork on his desk past his propped up feet and sighed. With this never-ending mountain, the only vacation he would get would be death. Or he could become a missing-nin.

Pondering the pros and cons of just up and leaving the village for a week or two, he was suddenly thrown to the floor by an earthquake. Peering out from under the flap of his cloak that had fallen over his head, his sunned mind only hear the one word that was being screamed down the streets of Konoha -

"Demon!"

Darkness encased her mind; red stained her vision; blood and fear filled her nostrils.

Nothing could stop her.

"'Kaasan!"

Her motions faltered, and a kunai drove itself into her nose. There was a soft tugging at her air tail, but she couldn't bring herself to notice it. Revenge filled her mind, bloodlust begging to kill.

"Please, 'kaasan! Please look at me!"

She couldn't. She had to find the scent of snake oil and kill it. She had to get revenge for her children. Her bloody children…

Ripped apart…

Spat on…

Bodies desecrated…

She screamed, voice howling all over the continent and later, those as far as the Cloud would tell tales of the mother ghost finally getting vengeance.

Then the Frog appeared. Something sparked in her mind, just like it had with her tail, but it too was suppressed until the dark haze in her mind took over completely.

There was a flash of light…

And a pair of eyes, blue as the sky, flew open. Fighting the sweat-drenched covers, the young Fox fell to the floor with a yelp, a sick feeling burning the walls of his stomach. He could hear the sound of footsteps at his door, but he could hardly focus on anything else. His hear swam as he stumbled over to his window, clutching at his stomach and hoping he could make it in time.

The door swung open just as the Fox shoved the glass up, vomiting down the wall of his small house/garage. Soft hands reached out to catch him as he fell and a concerned voice called to him, "Tails, buddy, are you ok?"

He shivered and a paw pressed against his forehead, checking for signs of a fever. Huddling close to the warm body pressing against him, Tails softly murmured only a single word.

"Nibi…"
