Yarhar! I lied! But this is more of an epilogue than another chapter, really. Anyway, this is REALLY the last chapter for this story! It’s done! Complete! Yay! I hope everyone enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
I’d also like to clarify this to some readers: I know that someone mentioned in a review (I can’t tell you who right now, because I don’t have internet access on this computer) that my disclaimer for one of my chapters was bad, because it said that English Chrno Crusade sucks. They said that this would imply that both sucked because they are the same, really. Let’s clear this up now. I LOVE Japanese CC because of the voices, and that’s it. I mean, seriously, the Rosette in English sounds like a smoker or something! Satella has a terrible German accent! AND they say Azmaria’s name wrong! Greg Ayres’s voice is pretty damn sexy, though, so he’s okay. At least they got one thing right.
Disclaimer: Hilary Haag likes to smoke. To say that I own Chrno Crusade would be a cruel joke.
Chrno groaned as Rosette took a deep breath.
“WHAT TOOK US SO LONG? THANKS TO YOUR LOUSY MAP WE GO SO LOST IN THOSE STUPID CAVES THAT IT TOOK US HOURS JUST TO GET OUT OF THEM! AND THEN WE COULDN’T FIND OUT STUPID PILOTS, WHO ENDED UP BEING ASLEEP!” Rosette raged furiously, with surprising vigor and energy for someone as hungry and tired as she claimed to be.
“But we’re okay now, right, Rosette?” Chrno said comfortingly, reaching delicately for her hand. He wrapped his fingers around her slender wrist and moved them to intertwine with her fingers. The girl took a long, calming breath before speaking again.
“I came to say thanks,” Rosette said, talking quieter now as she stared at the ground. “I know Chrno couldn’t have saved me if you hadn’t helped him, so thanks, I guess. G’night!” The bedraggled nun turned on her heel and walked briskly away before the Elder could make a crude comment. Chrno was trying hard to keep up with her, since his hand was still in hers and he didn’t feel like being dragged around the convent.
“Uh, Rosette, where are we going?” Chrno asked.
“I’m going to take a shower, but meet me back in my room in twenty minutes, okay?” The girl released his hand and strode into the dark building where the showers and dining hall were. Chrno decided to wait for Rosette up in her room, so he made his way up. There he sat on her bed, waiting for her to return.
As she stood drying herself off, Rosette thought back to her time locked up in the cave. She had wondered then if Chrno would really come to save her. Out loud, to her demonic captors, she had said nothing of her doubts, but inside, she was truly unsure of her partner’s intentions.
Would he really have risked his own life for mine? Rosette had wondered. Even now, the question was still on her mind. His life wasn’t really in danger when he came to save me, after all, was it? He was more skilled than those Pursuers were, and I think he knew it. But if my life was in danger, would he risk everything to save me, even his life?
That was a question that Rosette didn’t know the answer to, and she wasn’t so sure she wanted to know.
“What?” She snapped finally, frowning. “What are you looking at?”
“You,” Chrno answered simply and truthfully. Rosette blushed again and sat down on the bed directly behind him. Wordlessly, she untied the yellow ribbon from his hair and unbraided his long, purple locks. She reached for a brush, and began to comb through his hair gently.
Chrno loved it when she braided his hair. It gave him a reason to be close to her, without either of them getting embarrassed. He could feel the body heat radiating off her. He could smell the shampoo in her damp hair. He could hear her soft, regular breathing behind him. He could smell the soap she used to clean herself. He could feel her soft touch as she used her fingers to detangle knots, sometimes brushing against his neck as she worked through his hair.
He loved it. When she was braiding his hair, it was like everything in the world was good, and they were safe, and they had enough time. They both knew that it was a mere illusion, but they were contented by it nonetheless.
“What are you thinking about?” Chrno asked Rosette.
“You,” she answered, smiling. “And now that you can’t see me, what are you thinking about?”
“You,” Chrno repeated.
“What about me?” Rosette asked.
“I was wondered what I’d do if you were hurt,” he told her. “I’m sorry it took me so long to get there. If something happened to you, I’d never be able to forgive myself, Rosette.”
“Hey, hey, I’m fine!” Rosette protested, finished the long braid by retying the yellow ribbon. “See? Just a little bruise! That’s nothing!”
“But it could have been something, Rosette. And I wouldn’t have been there to protect you.” She couldn’t see his face, but Rosette could hear the guilt and pain in Chrno’s voice. She frowned and pulled him into her lap. Since she was taller than he was, it was a perfect fit. He snuggled into her and rubbed his head against her cheek. Rosette wrapped her arms around him, pulling him even closer.
“Baka,” she whispered. “I’m not gonna go off and die on you, Chrno. I promise.”
Chrno reached for her hand for the second time that night, raising it slowly to his lips and gently kissing it. It didn’t take long for them to fall asleep like that, arms wrapped around each other on the bed. They didn’t bother to pull the covers up. The warmth of security, safety, and most of all, each other, kept them warm that night.
